Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What show was Danny Ocean watching when Rusty came into his room and found him crying?

Answer: The Oprah Winfrey Show

Danny (played by George Clooney) tried to cover his tears by saying that he'd just bitten into a pepper, but Rusty (played by Brad Pitt) saw that "The Oprah Winfrey Show" was on the TV in the next room. He expressed surprise that Ocean had been watching the show, but got caught up in the program himself.

When he saw what the show was doing for a needy family, Rusty's eyes teared up just like Danny's had.
2. Getting to the diamonds was going to be difficult. How did Linus suggest they gain access?

Answer: through Abigail Sponder

There were a quarter of a billion dollars worth of diamonds and they were protected by 18 inches of concrete underneath them and two inch thick glass, that was pressure sensitive, on all other sides. Linus (played by Matt Damon) pointed out that Bank's chief assistant, Abigail Sponder (played by Ellen Barkin) not only had access to the diamonds but was also a cougar.
Presumably she had already shown interest in Linus, in his disguise as Lenny Pepperidge, assistant to a fake big roller, because he felt confident that he would be able to get access to the diamonds through her.
3. Although Terry Benedict's role in the con was primarily to provide funds, he was also used to goad Bank into doing something the gang wanted him to do. What was that?

Answer: give casino floor space to the new domino betting game

Frank Catton, one of Ocean's gang (played by Bernie Mac) laid out a new gambling table based on dominoes, for Bank's consideration. After a very brief showing, Bank told him to set up an appointment to discuss placing the table on his floor later. From the sidelines, Terry Benedict said that he could do better than that and offered Catton immediate space in his casino.

Not to be outdone by a rival, Bank decided to let Catton set up his table for the Grand Opening.
4. What was the difference between the Soft Opening and the Grand Opening?

Answer: The Soft Opening was only for V.I.P. guests, while the Grand Opening included the public.

The Soft Opening was by invitation only and it was the opening that the judge for the Five Diamond Award attended, or at least that he meant to attend before getting so sick.
One of the real pleasures of the Grand Opening was that, after months in bed following his heart attack, Reuben (played by Elliott Gould) was able to shake off his despondency and attend.
The Grand Opening was very ostentatious and was the target night for the con.
5. What was the final indignity suffered by the judge of The Five Diamond Award?

Answer: He was kicked out of his room, even though still very sick.

After being made ill by the biohazard materials sprinkled around his room, the judge, or V.U.P. as he was called in the credits, stayed in his room to recover. On the night of the Grand Opening he was told, by two of Ocean's men posing as casino employees, to leave as he had over-stayed his reservation. He tried to argue that they were not allowed to kick him out when he was sick, but they insisted.
On his way to check out the V.U.P. (played by David Paymer) encountered Bank and thanked him for throwing him out of his hotel When Bank asked him who he was, he simply said "Nobody."
6. Where was the magnetron, that was used to disable the Greco, hidden?

Answer: in Bank's new phone

With all of the cheating devices that the crew had installed, many of the guests were winning big. However the crew needed to disable the Greco in order to allow for Reuben to win big. Earlier in the movie, Bank had expressed a very strong desire to be the first to get a prototype of a new, gold phone. The boys made sure that he got one, and that there was a magnetron inside.
When Bank was in the room with the Greco, he tried to use the phone and the magnetron shut the system down, leaving him trapped in there for three and a half minutes.
7. What happened to Linus while he was spending time in the diamond room with the cougar, Abigail Sponder?

Answer: He was allegedly arrested by the F.B.I.

In between moments of alleged passion, Linus managed to plant a number of bombs around the base of the case the diamonds were in. Before he could be compromised by Sponder (played by Ellen Barkin) the F.B.I. entered the room, ripped off his nose and revealed that he was trying to steal the diamonds. The agent was really Linus' father, and their conversation in the elevator led Terry Benedict (who was listening in electronically) to believe that Linus had been successful in switching the diamonds. Benedict then tried to pull a double cross by having one of his guys remove the diamonds from Linus and jump off the roof with a parachute.
8. How did they really get the diamonds?

Answer: They pulled them up through the roof with a helicopter.

The bombs Linus managed to plant around the base of the case were detonated, freeing it from the 18 inches of concrete underneath. Then it was lifted through the ceiling by a cord from the helicopter that had landed on the roof to take Linus and his father away.
9. What did Ocean do with Terry Benedict's share of the loot?

Answer: He donated it to charity.

Although they expected Benedict (played by Andy Garcia) to pull some attempt at a double cross (which was why they faked the conversation in the elevator) it still made Ocean angry that he'd tried. So he took Benedict's share and donated it, in Benedict's name, to Camp to Belong, a camp for underprivileged kids.
Instead of seeking revenge, Benedict turned the situation to his own advantage and went on Oprah as a great benefactor who had donated $72 million dollars to charity.
10. How did the gang repay the Five Diamonds' judge (or the V.U.P.), for all the nasty things they had done to him?

Answer: They arranged for him to win a great deal of money playing a slot machine.

During the Grand Opening, there were slot machines rigged to pay off after a certain combination of plays. We saw Rusty play one machine to the very last coin and then walk away, leaving the machine (and one last coin) to pay off to the next player.
A similar scenario played out with the V.U.P. in the airport, where he was waiting for his flight. Rusty walked away, leaving the V.U.P. the coin and he was heard yelling that he had won $11 million dollars.
