Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Richard Burton starred in a 1964 film whose title included 'night' and which of these creatures?

Answer: Iguana

The film was based on the Tennessee Williams play 'The Night of the Iguana', and was directed by John Huston. Burton played the role of a priest, who suffers a nervous breakdown before becoming a tour guide. Unfortunately, he becomes entangled in more problems, leading to another mental collapse, from which he recovers, although there is another version in which the character commits suicide.

The film also starred Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr.
2. The 1935 film 'A Night at the Opera' starred which of these comedy teams?

Answer: Marx Brothers

The film starred Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx and was the first one they made without Zeppo. Harpo and Chico played Italian characters, and Groucho was a business manager. The film features real operas, notably Verdi's 'Il Trovatore', and also includes the songs 'All I Do is Dream of You' and 'Lydia the Tattooed Lady'.

The film title was used by Queen for their 1975 album, which included their huge hit 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
3. 'Night of the Hunter', released in 1955, was directed by which English born actor turned director?

Answer: Charles Laughton

Laughton was a successful film actor, with his credits including 'The Private Life of Henry VIII' (1933), 'Mutiny on the Bounty' (1935) and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1939). 'Night of the Hunter' starred Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish was based on the true life killer named Harry Powers.

The film was not a success at the time, and ended Laughton's directing career, although its quality and significance have been recognised more recently. The other three named were all British directors, although only Chaplin would be classed as an actor.
4. 'It Happened One Night' was a 1934 film starring Claudette Colbert and which American actor?

Answer: Clark Gable

The film was an early 'rom-com', with Colbert's character attempting to escape her rich family. She falls in love with Gable's poor, unemployed, reporter. In true romantic comedy fashion, there are various misunderstandings to overcome before love conquers all. Directed by Frank Capra, the film cleaned up at the Oscars with awards going to the director and both lead actors.

The film also received the Best Picture award and the Oscar for the writer, Robert Riskin. This achievement was not matched for over forty years when 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' repeated the feat in 1975.
5. The 1977 film 'Saturday Night Fever' featured music by which band?

Answer: Bee Gees

The film starred John Travolta as Tony Manero, who finds a release from his mundane job by spending his weekends at a local disco. Although the film is remembered for its disco dancing scenes, the original version is actually much darker in tone with scenes of attempted and actual rape.

The film was then cut to obtain a PG certificate in 1978, with these scenes removed. Travolta's character eventually realises the superficiality of his life, and the film ends with signs that he will change. The Bee Gees achieved several hits from the movie, including 'Stayin' Alive', 'Jive Talkin' and 'Night Fever'.
6. The 1967 film 'In the Heat of the Night' starred Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier, who portrayed which of these characters from the film?

Answer: Virgil Tibbs

The film portrayed the racial prejudice of a small town in Mississippi. Following a murder, the local police chief (Bill Gillespie), played by Steiger, arrests Virgil Tibbs assuming that he must be the culprit as he has an unexpectedly large amount of money on him for a black man.

He then discovers that Tibbs is actually a police detective, and has to accept his help in solving the crime. As an African American, Tibbs suffers much prejudice throughout the film, although he does eventually identify the killer. All the options I gave you are characters from the film. Poitier played the role of Tibbs again in two further films: 'They Call me Mister Tibbs' (1970) and 'The Organization' (1971).
7. Ben Stiller starred in a 2009 follow up to 'Night at the Museum' (2006). Which museum is mentioned in the official title?

Answer: Smithsonian

Although the film is often called 'Night at the Museum 2', its official title is 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian'. Stiller repeated his role of Larry Daley from the first film, although he was no longer working at the American Museum of National History. Larry discovered that some of the exhibits were being moved from New York to Washington, and that the wicked Pharaoh Kahmunrah had made plans to take over the world. Larry foiled the plot with the help of Amelia Earhart, played by Amy Adams and returned to his role as a museum guard, this time at the Smithsonian.

As well as Stiller, Owen Wilson, Robin Williams and Steve Coogan, among others, reprised their roles from the original film.
8. 'Still of the Night' (1982) stars Roy Scheider and which of these actresses?

Answer: Meryl Streep

The film is a psychological thriller, with Scheider portraying a psychiatrist and Streep a woman who may have murdered one of his patients. The film also featured Jessica Tandy, who played Scheider's mother. The story was written by Robert Benton and David Newman, with Benton also directing the film. 'Still of the Night' came out between 'The French Lieutenant's Woman' (1981) and 'Sophie's Choice' (1982) and Meryl has, apparently, said it is one of the worst films she made.
9. Sidney Lumet directed which of these 'night' related films?

Answer: Long Day's Journey into Night

The film was based on the play of the same name written by Eugene O'Neill and starred Katherine Hepburn, Ralph Richardson, Jason Robards Jr. and Dean Stockwell. It covers just one day in the life of the Tyrones, all of whom are suffering from addictions, to alcohol or morphine.

The story is partly based on O'Neill's own family. Hepburn received a nomination as Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her performance.
10. The 1958 British film about the sinking of the Titanic had which 'night' related title?

Answer: A Night to Remember

The film was based on a 1955 book of the same name, written by Walter Lord. The screenplay was by the novelist and screenwriter Eric Ambler, whose books include 'The Mask of Dimitrios'. The film is often praised for its historical accuracy, possibly helped by having Joseph Boxall, an officer who had survived the original tragedy, as an advisor.

The film starred Kenneth More as Charles Lightoller, and also featured David McCallum and Honor Blackman, among many others. The other titles I made up, and they do not seem to be real films, at least at the time of writing.
