Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we first see Oh Dae Su in the prison, which of the following questions does he NOT ask the guard who brings him his food?

Answer: Who has imprisoned him

Oh Dae Su is kidnapped and locked in the mysterious prison while on his way home on a rainy night. Instead of being home for his young daughter's birthday, Oh Dae Su gets very drunk and is arrested, and has to be picked up by his best friend, Joo Hwan. It is while Joo Hwan is in a phone booth, apologising to Oh Dae Su's wife, that he is kidnapped.

When we first see him inside the prison, we learn that he has already been locked up for 2 months. Despite his desperate pleas for answers, the prison guard refuses to answer or even acknowledge him, even when Oh Dae Su grabs at his leg.
2. Which pieces of evidence do Oh Dae Su's captors plant at the scene of his wife's death, in order to ensure he is blamed for the crime?

Answer: A blood sample, and a cup with fingerprints

Whilst imprisoned, Oh Dae Su's wife is murdered and he is framed for the crime. As well as planting evidence at the scene, the real criminals also steal family photographs, which acts as further evidence to cement Oh Dae Su's guilt. This act means that should Oh Dae Su ever manage to escape, he will be unable to return to his old life, as well as ensuring that his young daughter is left without parents.
3. During his time in the prison, Oh Dae Su speculates as to who may be responsible for his capture. Which of the following people does he NOT consider as a possible culprit?

Answer: Park Pan Yong

Oh Dae Su initially starts to write down a list of all the people who may hold a grudge against him, and this develops into an autobiography which details his most shameful deeds. Later on in the film, Oh Dae Su repeats some of these names whilst on the phone to the real culprit, who incidentally is not someone that he had even considered.
4. What does Oh Dae Su use to tattoo his hand, making a tally of each year that passes?

Answer: The wire from a notebook spine

Oh Dae Su is imprisoned for a total of 15 years, and when he begins to tattoo his hand, he states that he is already six years behind, and it will be easier in following years when he only has to tattoo one line at a time. He later references his tattoos when preparing to torture Mr Park, informing him that he will remove one of Mr Park's teeth for every year he was imprisoned.

He does later receive an extra chopstick in his food tray, and uses it to start chiselling away at the external wall in order to escape. He only manages to remove one brick before he is released.
5. When Oh Dae Su is released, why is he left on the roof of an apartment building?

Answer: The building was built on top of the alleyway where Oh Dae Su was kidnapped.

Oh Dae Su is released back in the same place he was taken from. In the 15 years he had been imprisoned, there had been some major redevelopment in the city, and the alleyway had been destroyed in order to build the apartment complex.
Whilst on the roof of this building, Oh Dae Su meets a suicidal man, whose comments Oh Dae Su later uses in order to convince Ms Yoo to help him in the final scenes of the film.
6. Why does Oh Dae Su recognise Mido when he meets her in the sushi restaurant?

Answer: She had appeared on a television show.

Although they are also related to each other, Oh Dae Su had not seen Mido (Yeun Hee, as he knew her) since she was a toddler, so he had no idea of this fact at the time. Mido had previously appeared on TV, in a competition to find the best chef of Japanese Cuisine, and Oh Dae Su had watched a great deal of television while imprisoned, having little else to do.

They discuss the idea that female sushi chefs are unusual, as women's hands are usually too warm to prepare sushi.
7. When Oh Dae Su makes an ill-planned attempt to have sex with Mido while she is using the bathroom, what does she use to defend herself?

Answer: Knife

After Oh Dae Su collapses in the restaurant, Mido takes him to her house to rest. Despite her telling him not to get any ideas, making it obvious she is taking a knife with her into the bathroom, he still bursts into the room and grabs her. After being hit on the head with the handle of the knife, Oh Dae Su relents and tries to leave the apartment. Mido convinces him to stay by assuring him that she does like him, and will someday want to sleep with him, but she's not ready yet.
8. When Oh Dae Su and Mido try to find out what happened to his young daughter after the death of her mother, they discover that she has been adopted by a family in Stockholm, Sweden. What name does she now go by?

Answer: Eva

Oh Dae Su is given some contact information for his daughter, as well as a map to his wife's grave. He is told that his daughter still occasionally calls back, but her Korean is becoming weaker. Her real name is Yeun Hee.
9. According to Mr Park, he will not agree to kidnap and imprison certain types of people. Which people are they?

Answer: People who are protected by bodyguards

Mr Park mentions this while on a phone call to a potential client. He tells the client that there are other businesses who specialise in dealing with people who have bodyguards. We know he is willing to imprison women, as he references this on the tapes Oh Dae Su listens to, and also because he agrees to hold Mido later on in the film.

He makes no reference to young people or famous people.
10. Oh Dae Su is told by Lee Woo Jin that he must solve the mystery of his imprisonment by July 5th. What is the significance of this date?

Answer: The anniversary of the day Lee Soo Ah died

The date corresponds to the death of Lee Soo Ah, Lee Woo Jin's sister, and is symbolic because her death is the reason for Lee Woo Jin's revenge plan.

This discussion occurs during a pivotal scene where Oh Dae Su has his first major confrontation with his captor, Lee Woo Jin, and his "assistant" Mr Han. The date limit gives Oh Dae Su only five days to solve the mystery. If he succeeds, Lee Woo Jin agrees to kill himself, but if he fails, Mido will be murdered.
