Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Settling onto the couch, a huge bowl of buttered popcorn at hand, Nora turns on the television. "Jordan," she says, "you are going to laugh yourself silly. This 1935 film stars Kitty Carlisle, Allan Jones, Margaret Dumont - and three of the funniest brothers to ever make a movie. Can you guess the film's name?"

Answer: A Night at the Opera

Put together two lovers trying to find operatic success, an ocean voyage from Italy to New York, a tiny stateroom, mistaken identities and three Marx brothers, and you have the hilarious movie, "A Night at the Opera".
"A Night at the Opera" was the first major Marx Brothers film that did not include Zeppo. He left the act to begin a career as an engineer and a theatrical agent. Gummo did not appear in any of the movies.
2. Nora hands Jordan a mug of hot chocolate, takes a sip of hers, then says, "This screwball comedy came out 1934. It was directed by Frank Capra, and it stars Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. And, the film won all five of the big Academy Awards! Do you know which film this is?"

Answer: It Happened One Night

A witty quick-paced romantic comedy, "It Happened One Night" features Claudette Colbert as a socialite who ends up taking a madcap road trip with an unemployed reporter, played by Clark Gable. While the movie has become a classic, Colbert and Gable were not the original choices for their roles. Several actors were considered, including Robert Montgomery, Myrna Loy, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard and a few others. They all either turned down the roles or could not take them on due to scheduling conflicts.
3. The television is on, and Nora snuggles next to her nephew Jordan as the movie begins to play. "You are going to like this 2006 movie," she says, handing him a candy bar. "It stars Ben Stiller, Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney. And, it is almost educational - full of historical figures! Do you know which movie we're going to watch?"

Answer: Night at the Museum

"Night at the Museum" stars Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, a new night watchman at the American Museum of Natural History. Following a series of job failures, a divorce and a desperate need to earn his son's respect, he is determined to succeed in his new career. But, things get complicated when the exhibits come to life, and suddenly Larry's resolutions are put to the test.
While critics gave the movie mixed reviews, it was a box office success. The sequel, "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" was released in 2009, and also starred Ben Stiller.
4. "This movie is a classic," Nora tells Jordan as she turns on the DVD player. "It's set in Sparta, Mississippi, at a time when racial tensions are high. There is a murder, a detective who was just passing through town - but gets involved in the case - and a gradual change in attitudes. Do you know which movie we're watching?"

Answer: In the Heat of the Night

1967's "In the Heat of the Night" is a mystery film starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger and Warren Oates. A businessman in Sparta has been murdered, and the police are stymied. When a black detective from Philadelphia is wrongly arrested for the crime, the police chief is pressured into involving the detective in the murder case. Reluctant to work together, and in an atmosphere of mutual dislike, their enforced cooperation leads to eventual respect. Poitier's line "They call me MISTER Tibbs" is one of AFI's top movie quotes, and it is also the title of the movie's 1970 sequel.

There is also a third movie in the series, 1971's "The Organization". And, the television series "In the Heat of the Night" (starring Carroll O'Connor, Howard Rollins and Carl Weathers) premiered in 1988 and ran for eight seasons.
5. Nora sets the fondue pot on the table between her and her nephew, and turns on the television. "Jordan, we are going to have a very retro-cool night! This movie was a huge hit in 1977, and it has a future megastar in the main role. There's a lot of dancing - and disco music! Can you guess the name of this movie?"

Answer: Saturday Night Fever

A classic from the disco era, "Saturday Night Fever" stars John Travolta as Tony Manero, a young New Yorker who escapes his unhappiness with his job, family life and seemingly hopeless future by immersing himself in disco dancing.
The soundtrack was a best-seller, and won a Grammy Award for best album of the year. The movie was followed by the 1983 sequel "Staying Alive", which was directed by Sylvester Stallone.
6. Jordan reaches for the nachos as Nora slides the DVD into the player. "I saw this movie when it came out in 2004. It's set in Texas, and stars Billy Bob Thornton, Tim McGraw, Derek Luke, Lucas Black and several other fine actors. I don't usually like sports movies, but this one examines some important themes. Do you know what movie I'm talking about?"

Answer: Friday Night Lights

Based on H.G. (Buzz) Bissinger's 1990 book, "Friday Night Lights" is centered around one high school's football season in Odessa, Texas. The team's star player is injured at the beginning of the season, and the coach is tasked with motivating the other players, and restoring hope to the residents of an economically dying town. The movie has several recurring themes, including racism, social and economic disparity, teamwork, faith and friendship.
A television series by the same name premiered in 2006, and despite fan protests, the series was canceled in 2011.
7. "I'm glad you let me rent this movie, Aunt Nora," Jordan says, and opens a couple cans of soda. Handing one to Nora, he adds "It is hilarious. There's a morgue, prostitutes, dead bodies and the theme song is by Quarterflash. Plus, it was directed by Ron Howard and stars Henry Winkler. Do you know what movie this is?"

Answer: Night Shift

"Night Shift" is a 1982 comedy which received relatively good reviews from both critics and the general public. Henry Winkler stars as Chuck Lumley, a rather unassuming and quiet New York stockbroker. In a bid to escape the stress of Wall Street, Chuck takes a job in a New York morgue. He is soon moved to the night shift, where his new coworker (Billy) talks him into a prostitution scheme that will add dollars to their wallets - and add more stress to Chuck's life than Wall Street ever had.
In addition to Henry Winkler, the movie stars Michael Keaton, Shelley Long and Richard Belzer.
8. "Tonight is oldies night," Nora says to her nephew, Jordan. "We're going to watch a 1955 thriller starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish. Mitchum plays a serial killer who is after a widow's fortune, and the movie was directed by Charles Laughton. Can you guess this movie's name?"

Answer: Night of the Hunter

"Night of the Hunter" is a dark thriller, and was shot in black and white to emphasize the film's themes and moods. A reverend-turned-serial killer has knowledge of a fortune, and is determined to find the treasure. In order to do so, he has to win over a widow and her two small children.

As he insinuates himself into their lives, the tension grows - as does the danger. This was the only film Charles Laughton directed. When it was released to poor reviews and box office receipts, he swore to never direct another film. Over time, however, the film was deemed a classic and has ranked well in several film industry lists.
9. "This 1982 movie is very suspenseful," Nora says as she sits down next to her nephew, Jordan. "Roy Scheider plays a psychiatrist who falls for a rather mysterious woman, who may be a psychopathic killer. She is played by Meryl Streep, and the movie was directed by Robert Benton. Do you know the name of this thriller?"

Answer: Still of the Night

"Still of the Night" is tense psychological thriller, with a style that has been likened to works by Alfred Hitchcock. The movie features Scheider as a psychiatrist in Manhattan who becomes involved in a series of murders - and becomes a target himself. With the working title of "Stab", the movie's director and cinematographer considered filming in black and white, and the movie's script was co-written by the director.
10. Nora puts the movie in the DVD player, and hands the remote to her nephew, Jordan. "Let's turn off all the lights and lock the doors," she says, piling pillows on the floor. "This movie is very scary - and gory. It came out in 1980, and stars Jamie Lee Curtis. There is a killer targeting particular teenagers, and the action takes place at a high school. Can you guess the name of the movie?"

Answer: Prom Night

Considered a slasher film, "Prom Night" begins with a young girl's death while playing in an abandoned building. While she was not murdered, she was teased into falling to her death. The four other children promise each other to keep what happened a secret, but there is a glitch. Someone else saw what happened. Six years pass, and during 'prom night' the witness metes out a bloody brand of retribution.
The movie also stars Leslie Nielsen, Casey Stevens and Eddie Benton. There are four sequels, and the original movie was redone in 2008.
