Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of the two Potts children?

Answer: Jeremy and Jemima

Jeremy and Jemima were Caractacus' two children. There was never any mention of their mother in the film, it was assumed that Caractacus was a widow. It was Jeremy and Jemima who suggested to Caractacus that they should buy the car that they played in at Coggins' yard. Later in the film, they got captured by Vulgaria's evil Child Catcher.
They were played by Adrian Hall and Heather Ripley.
2. The car won the Grand Prix three years running before ending up in Mr. Coggins' yard.

Answer: True

In the opening titles, the car could be seen at three different Grand Prix events before crashing in its last outing when the driver tried to avoid a little girl holding her dog in the track.
It was burnt out and was next seen in Mr. Coggins' yard where the children played in her.
3. The people of Vulgaria primarily wore what colour clothing at the Baron's birthday party?

Answer: Purple

The people in the party were all wearing purple, including some who had purple hair.
Earlier, when they were first shown in the castle, they also seemed to be wearing mostly purple.
4. What was the name of the Potts family dog?

Answer: Edison

The Potts' dog was called Edison, presumably after the inventor.
It was Edison who accidentally discovered that the sweets with holes in them could play music when he ate a discarded one on the floor. Later, when the family was in the sweet factory, Edison heard the whistling sweets and, along with other dogs, rushed into the factory, ruining Caractacus' pitch.
5. Who played Grandpa Potts?

Answer: Lionel Jeffries

Lionel Jeffries played Grandpa, Caractacus' father, despite the fact that Dick Van Dyke (Caractacus) is actually seven months older than him.
Grandpa was an eccentric and often went into his "laboratory" where he visited all manner of countries. He was taken to Vulgaria after two of the Baron's men mistook him for his son.
James Robertson Justice is Lord Scrumptious and Benny Hill is the toymaker.
6. What meal did Caractacus Potts cook on his invention in the kitchen while singing "You Two"?

Answer: Sausages and Eggs

Caractacus sang "You Two" when Truly left and he was left with his children. The song was about how they only needed each other and they all looked after each other.
His invention fried eggs and cooked sausages before putting them on a plate and sending them down a track to the table. Unfortunately, Grandpa's plate came down with just a boiled egg on it!
7. Which of the following words does *NOT* finish the line: "To use the vernacular, it's more than spectacular. It's___"?

Answer: Super

The line came from the title song "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and was:
"To use the venacular,
It's more than spectacular.
It's wizard, it's smashing, it's keen."
This part of the song was sung after they had picked up Truly Scrumptious after her car went into the pond.
8. Who wrote the story which provided the basis of the film?

Answer: Ian Fleming

Although none of the options are really known for their children's writing, Ian Fleming did in fact write "Chity Chitty Bang Bang".
Ian Fleming was an English author, best known for his books about the spy James Bond. It is said that he turned his hand to writing a children's book after his son complained that he was always writing about 007 and not writing books that he could read. Therefore, Fleming created the story the film was based upon.
Ian Fleming died in 1964, four years before the film was released.
9. What kind of factory did Lord Scrumptious run?

Answer: Sweets

Lord Scrumptious owned a large sweet factory. Caractacus Potts took his whistling sweets there in the hope of selling the recipe to him. It was in his factory that the song "Toot Sweets" took place.
10. What kind of machine did Caractacus take to the fair?

Answer: Haircutting

He took his haircutting machine which was powered by bicycle. However, it burned the hair away of the man who was having his hair cut and a chase ensued. Caractacus ran into the tent where the performers were and ended up singing "Me Ol' Bamboo". Afterward, the crowd threw coins into his hat and he was able to afford the car!
