Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What TV show is Saul watching when Dale arrives at his apartment?

Answer: 227

This is a great introduction to Saul as an atypical stoner hermit hanging around his house and enjoying all of the funny syndicated reruns available to him. "227" was a wonderfully obscure and hilarious choice. Right before he enters Saul is seen laughing along to the joke about one of the character's apartments being in a messy state, or as she says in the episode, "I thought hurricane season was over!"
2. When Matheson shoots Dale and Saul ends up wounding Matheson, they search for where on Dale's body he is injured/shot. What part of his body is blown off?

Answer: Ear

When he shoots at Dale it takes a while before finally seeing the bloody mess that is left of his right ear, as the top and bottom have retained the overall shape, but the entire middle section is missing. They don't ever show the missing part, as it is most likely destroyed, but they do show the framework of where his ear used to be.
3. When Saul sells the Pineapple Express to the schoolboys behind the bodega, he tells the kids not to tell anyone where they got it from. What fake adaptations of their names does he tell them to use if people ask who sold it to them?

Answer: Santiago and Dunbar

This is an all-around bad decision for them, as it not only brings the wrath of the school police liaison officer, but also the police car theft and shooting car chase that ensue shortly thereafter. The kids don't really care what names they are given, as they are more interested in getting their merchandise and getting back to school. FYI: Silver and Denton are the two characters last names, but Saul chooses to give them fake options in the hope that it won't come back to haunt them.
4. At the beginning of the movie when Dale goes to see Angie at school, one of Angie's jock classmates comes up to them and talks about how he almost made her pee her pants in drama class imitating which actor?

Answer: Jeff Goldblum

It is unclear on what bothered him more: the fact that his girlfriend is interested in boys her own age, or that this kid was able to impress her with a Jeff Goldbum impersonation. Their conversation in the hallway is inevitably ended by a nosy teacher wondering why Dale doesn't have a visitor's badge.
5. What kind of car does Red drive?

Answer: Daewoo Lanos

"You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos!" is shouted by Red when he comes back to save Dale and Saul at "the farm." The image of him and Dale, beaten and bloody, speeding the Daewoo down the streets of L.A. is a very nice touch, since who would expect a drug dealer to drive a Daewoo.
6. When Dale is talking to Angie about her mom cooking dinner for them, what does he say is the "food so nice, they named it twice?"

Answer: Couscous

When Dale is trying to sound enthusiastic about having dinner with Angie's parents and learns that her mom is making cous cous, Dale uses this fantastic cliche adage to end the conversation. Angie doesn't respond to his clever quip, as she is more determined to have him confirm that he will be attending the dinner as planned. FYI: Shrimp Scampi is "shrimp shrimp" with one word being in English and the other in Italian.
7. When Dale and Red are preparing their guns to save Saul, why does Red want Dale to make sure he picks up all of the bullets that fall out of the gun onto the floor?

Answer: So that he doesn't vacuum them up and shoot his face off

Red has a rather large miniature arsenal of weapons hidden in his home. As they take them out to prepare to save Saul, Red simply cocks the rifle and says nonchalantly, "Thug Life!" The next thing you see is them racing down the streets of Los Angeles in Red's Daewoo listening to rap music.
8. When Dale and Saul are in the woods, how do they attempt to destroy their cellphones to avoid being tracked down by the police?

Answer: Dale's is smashed and Saul's is thrown at a tree.

While Dale manages to destroy his phone, Saul freaks out and chooses to throw the phone at a tree, which he inevitably misses. This is further substantiated when Carol tells Ted how what her fellow police officers found when they discovered Dale's car in the woods.

However, Saul's paranoid freak-out in the woods while looking for the phone is one of the best parts of their evasion, as it comes completely out of nowhere and for absolutely no reason.
9. Budlofsky and Matheson kill each other during the course of the gun battle.

Answer: False

Budlofsky is given the opportunity to kill Saul with Carol egging him on, but he instead decides to go home and have dinner with his wife. Matheson, who had previously been shot by Saul, appears off screen and shoots Budlofsky because the act of going home proves that he has, in fact, "gone soft" as Matheson had predicted earlier in the film.

However, out of nowhere flies in Red and his Daewoo, which fast and furiously runs over the wounded Matheson as he peaks his head out of the tunnel.
10. When Dale is serving subpoenas at the beginning of the movie, he is listening to a song that a car of bystanders suggest he "take to the next level" because they are also enjoying the song. What is the song they are all rocking out to?

Answer: Electric Avenue

This song plays throughout the movie's introduction, as Dale goes from location to location serving subpoenas and is humorously ended when he pulls up next to two Latino men also singing along to "Electric Avenue" and who drive off after a final "Orale!" The song "Electric Avenue" is actually based on a real market street in Brixton, which specializes in multi-ethnic shopping and food.
11. After Dale and Saul wake up in the woods and realize that they have slept very late into the day, they realize they need to get to Red's house as soon as possible. Which of the following do they do while they travel along the wooded area?

Answer: Play leap frog

You see them taking a leisurely hike to the road from the woods. Even though they make a big deal about needing to move quickly and get to Red's house as soon as possible, for some reason they still take the time play leap frog along the way.
12. When they are trying to flee Ted's henchmen, Saul just wants to hide out somewhere that is completely removed from society, so they hide out in the woods. When Dale asks Saul to speculate on the possible ways that Ted could find their hidden location, which is one of the ways that Saul mentions?

Answer: All of these are mentioned

Dale's response is one of shock and bewilderment, which he conveys to Saul; however, because he is not all that intelligent, Saul replies with a "thank you" even though it was not a compliment. This conversation leads to Saul's revelation that their cellphones could be used by police to track them down, and so they decide to destroy them.
13. What is the name of Saul's grandmother's retirement home?

Answer: Pointe Break Retirement Home

The name is shown briefly when Saul arrives to change his grandmother's clocks and he is encountered by Budlofsky and Matheson. The two thugs are playing dominoes with his grandmother and beginning to interrogate her on where they could find Saul when he happens to walk in the door.

It is in this scene where Saul smashes the coffee pot against Matheson's face turning him into the "Hamburglar."
14. When Dale is trying to psych Red up for taking karmic control over his destiny by helping him save Saul, he uses several examples of things Red could be reincarnated as if he has good karma. "You'll come back as an eagle. You'll come back as a dragon. You'll come back as ___ ___." What famous actor does Dale reference?

Answer: Jude Law

The sequence of reincarnation examples is hilarious, as the bad karma possibilities include a cockroach, worm, and anal beads. When Dale discovers Red, he has been shot three times and is on the floor of his bathroom essentially waiting to die, and it is Dale that convinces him that he is not necessarily destined to die.
15. The film begins at an underground government testing facility where a military private is being observed to determine the effects of smoking marijuana. The marijuana is referred to by a code name rather than its name. What is the code name it was given?

Answer: Item 9

This scene takes place in 1937 at what becomes Ted Jones' "farm" later in the film: it is the drug dealer's harvesting and storage facility that Dale and Saul must escape from. They mention the item number several times throughout the scenes as both the scientists, military analysts, and the stoned private talk about their opinions on it as a whole. "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Bill Hader's performance as the military private is classic, as he displays all of the classic symptoms of exposure to marijuana to a hilarious degree.

The eventual decision on item nine is determined as: "ILLEGAL!"
