Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the singing voice of Pocahontas?

Answer: Judy Kuhn

Irene Bedard is Pocahontas' speaking voice; however, Judy Kuhn sings the part. Judy was also a featured performer in "Les Misérables" in concert and she took part in various episodes of "Law & Order". Some of the songs sung include, "Colors of the Wind" and "Just Around the River Bend". In the original movie, she also performs "If I Never Knew You" with Mel Gibson.
2. What is the name of Pocahontas' Father?

Answer: Chief Powhatan

Chief Powhatan also went by the name Wahunsunacock but he is known as Powhatan in the movie. Her father returns at the beginning of the movie with intents of having Pocahontas marry Kocoum. Although Pocahontas doesn't choose the same path, he is supportive of her decision in the end. His speaking voice is Russell Means and his part is sung by Jim Cummings.
3. Who wrote the music for the film?

Answer: Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz

All of theses artists wrote for Disney but Menken and Schwartz were the only ones to work on this film. They have continued to compose songs for both films and stage shows throughout the years. Other Disney movies worked on by these two include:
1989- "The Little Mermaid" (Menken)
1991- "Beauty and the Beast" (Menken)
1992- "Aladdin" (Menken)
1996- "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (Menken & Schwartz)
1997- "Hercules" (Menken)
2007- "Enchanted" (Menken & Schwartz)
4. Who plays both the speaking and the singing voice for John Smith?

Answer: Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson does in fact do both. He not only has a passion for acting but he has also done some directing and producing. Some examples are the production and direction of "Passion of the Christ" and he directed a live stage production of "Hamlet". In "Pocahontas", he plays John Smith, a traveler seeking to find gold in the new world.

Instead, he finds Pocahontas, a Native American woman whom he ends up falling in love with. In turn, he tries to protect her tribe from his evil governor, Ratcliffe, which winds him up in a bit of trouble.

In the end, he earns the tribe's trust and returns to his home land to be taken care of.
5. Which song was in the original movie but got cut out and later added in one of the DVD versions?

Answer: "If I Never Knew You"

The song was originally made for the scene where John Smith is being held captive and Pocahontas comes to visit him. However, during test screenings with child audiences, their attention "seemed to wander from the film" so Alan Menken suggested they cut it. They put the scene back into one of the DVD releases.
6. Can you fill in the blank: "Come taste the ________ berries of the Earth"?

Answer: "Sunsweet"

"Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth". Pocahontas sings this to John Smith during "Colors of the Wind". This line is in the second verse when they are rolling through the flowers.
7. What comes next: "Steady as the beating drum..."?

Answer: "Singing to the cedar flute"

"Steady as the beating drum
Singing to the cedar flute
Seasons go and seasons come
Bring the corn and bear the fruit"
This song is being played during the beginning credits. These are the first words sung in the song. You see the tribe going about their daily routine as they hear the warriors returning home.
8. What color is Ratcliffe's cape?

Answer: Red

Ratcliffe's cape is in fact red. At one point of the movie during "Mine Mine Mine" while he fantasizes about being awarded greatly, the cape turns to gold but the actual color is red.
9. What words are missing from this quote said by Ratcliffe: "You've been a slipshod _______ and a poor excuse for a(n) _______."?

Answer: sailor ; soldier

"And if you happen to see any Indians, shoot them. Oh, and Thomas? You've been a slipshod sailor and a poor excuse for a soldier. Don't disappoint me again." Towards the beginning of the movie, you learn what a poor shot Thomas is, causing Ratcliffe not to trust him with a gun. Since John Smith has run away to be with Pocahontas, and Thomas is Ratcliffe's only choice, he sends Thomas after Smith to bring him back. Altough John Smith has been nothing but a good friend to Thomas, Thomas wants to please his governor.

This puts him between a rock and a hard place and leaving him with the decision of right or wrong.
10. Who places the paw prints on Kocoum's chest?

Answer: Kekata

At the beginning of the film, Chief Powhatan honors Kocoum by having Kekata place bear prints on his chest. Kekata is a tribal elder. He has lived through many things and is very knowledgeable. He tries to heal a fallen warrior but doesn't have much luck. He explains to the tribe that "The pale-face is a demon. The only thing they feel at all is greed."
