Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'll bet someone back east is going, 'Now why don't he write?'" (Hint: In the events leading up to this scene, Lieutenant John Dunbar and __________ are on a wagon going to Fort Sedgwick.)

Answer: Timmons (Robert Pastorelli)

In the events leading up to this scene, U.S. Civil War veteran Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) has requested that he be stationed at a western U.S. outpost, to see the west before it's gone. He gets assigned to remote Fort Sedgwick (which turns out to be unoccupied), and gets a ride there with trader Timmons (Robert Pastorelli). Timmons' crude and obnoxious behavior takes the edge off Dunbar's enjoyment of his experience as they travel farther west.

As he writes in his journal, "If it wasn't for my companion, I believe I'd be having the time of my life." In this scene Dunbar finds an old skeleton on the prairie and Timmons comments with this quote.
2. "Dunbar, not Dumb Bear."

Answer: John Dunbar (Kevin Costner)

In the events leading up to this scene, Lieutenant Dunbar introduces himself to a village of nearby Sioux Indians and eventually has a meeting with Kicking Bird (Graham Greene), with Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell) translating. In this scene Kicking Bird mistakenly thinks Lt. Dunbar's name is Dumb Bear, and Dunbar corrects him with this quote.
3. "It is the name all the people are calling you now."

Answer: Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell)

In this scene Stands With A Fist is translating between John Dunbar and Kicking Bird and says "He thanks Dances With Wolves for coming." Dunbar asks "Who is Dances with Wolves?" and Stands With a Fist answers with this quote. In the dream sequence where Stands With A Fist as a young child (Christine) is captured by the Pawnee Indians who killed her family, Christine is played by Kevin Costner's daughter Annie.
4. "I've never known a people so eager to laugh, so devoted to family, so dedicated to each other."

Answer: John Dunbar (Kevin Costner)

In this scene Lieutenant Dunbar has just participated in a buffalo hunt with the Indians, helped celebrate the success with feasting and storytelling, and is returning to the soldiers' fort. He makes this observation about them as a voiceover in the movie.
5. "Turned injun, didn't yeh." (Hint: In this scene Dances With Wolves has just been captured.)

Answer: Sgt. Bauer (Larry Joshua)

In the events leading up to this scene, Lieutenant Dunbar has married Stands With a Fist, has started living at the Indian village, and has started dressing like an Indian. As the tribe is preparing to move to winter camp, he suddenly realizes he left his journal back at the soldiers' fort. When he goes back for his journal, new soldiers at the fort kill his horse and capture him. Sgt. Bauer says this quote to Dunbar just after he has been captured.
6. "The white men who wore this came around the time of my grandfather's grandfather. Eventually we drove them out. Then the Mexicans came. But they do not come here anymore. In my own time, the Texans. They have been like all the others. They take without asking. But I think you are right. I think they will keep coming. When I think of that, I look at this helmet. I don't know if we are ready for these people."

Answer: Chief Ten Bears (Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman)

In this scene Dances With Wolves has brought to Chief Ten Bears his concerns that more and more white settlers will encroach on Indian land in the future. Ten Bears unwraps an old Spanish Conquistador's helmet and says this quote to Dances with Wolves.
7. "You are the only white man I have ever known. I have thought about you a lot. More than you think. And I understand your concern. But I think you are wrong. The white man the soldiers are looking for no longer exists."

Answer: Chief Ten Bears (Floyd 'Red Crow' Westerman)

In this scene Dunbar has come to the conclusion he must leave the Indian camp. As he explains to Chief Ten Bears, "when the soldiers find me, they find you." Ten Bears replies to him with this quote.
8. "My place is with you. I go where you go."

Answer: Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell)

In this scene Dances With Wolves prepares to leave the Indian camp, but realizes he will be taking his wife Stands With A Fist away from the people she grew up with. She sees his sadness and says this quote to him.
9. "We come far, you and me."

Answer: Kicking Bird (Graham Greene)

In the events leading up to this scene, Dances With Wolves realizes he must leave the Indian camp for the safety of the others. As he prepares to leave camp, he says goodbye to his good friend Kicking Bird (Graham Greene), who says this quote to him.
10. "Do you see that I am your friend? Can you see that you will always be my friend?"

Answer: Wind In His Hair (Rodney Grant)

In this scene Wind In His Hair has positioned himself on a high cliff, seen by Dances With Wolves and Stands With A Fist as they ride out of the Sioux winter camp. Wind In His Hair didn't like Dances With Wolves when they had first met, but gradually grew to consider him a good friend and shouts this to him as he leaves. Viggo Mortensen was originally cast to play John Dunbar.

He is perhaps best known to many movie buffs for playing Aragorn in all three "Lord of the Rings" movies.
