Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens at a cocktail reception that Phil Stuckey is throwing for Edward Lewis, a successful corporate raider who is in Los Angeles on business. Edward is on the phone with Jessica, his girlfriend in New York, trying to get her to join him in L.A. for the week, but she is not open to the suggestion. What complaint does Jessica level at Edward?

Answer: "You think that I'm at your beck and call."

Edward wants Jessica by his side while he is in L.A. for the week, but approaches it in a way that leaves her feeling unappreciated. "I told my secretary to make the arrangements. Didn't she call you?" asks Edward. "Yes she did," Jessica replies. "I speak to your secretary more than I speak to you." Edward sidesteps the criticism and tries to make another plea for Jessica's attendance. "This is a very important week for me. I need you here," he says. Jessica remains unmoved. "But you never give me any notice," she complains. "You think that I'm at your beck and call." The argument escalates, and ends with Edward and Jessica breaking up.

Edward leaves the party and bumps into Susan, an old flame, on the way out. It is clear that they are still on good terms as they discuss her recent marriage. "Susan, tell me something," Edward asks. "When you and I were dating, did you speak to my secretary more than you spoke to me?" Susan flashes Edward a knowing smile, before replying, "She was one of my bridesmaids." The irony is not lost on Edward. He borrows Phil's car and drives off alone.
2. Edward meets Vivian for the first time while he is driving around trying to find Beverly Hills. He pulls over to the side of the road where Vivian is loitering and asks her for help. When she only agrees to help in exchange for money, Edward is incredulous. "You can't charge me for directions," he says. What is Vivian's sensible reply?

Answer: "I can do anything I want to, baby. I ain't lost."

Edward doesn't know his way around the city, and he had left the cocktail party in a hurry without his driver because his car was trapped behind some other cars. Lost and desperate, he ends up on Hollywood Boulevard and has to ask Vivian for directions to Beverly Hills. Vivian agrees to help for five dollars, but Edward feels that she is being "ridiculous". "Price just went up to $10," Vivian replies. "You can't charge me for directions," says Edward, a little flabbergasted by this time. "I can do anything I want to, baby," Vivian replies. "I ain't lost." Edward only has a $20 bill, so Vivian climbs into the passenger seat, explaining, "For $20, I'll show you personal." During the drive, the attractive couple break the ice by talking about cars, which culminates in Vivian criticizing Edward for his lousy driving skills. To get Vivian off his back, Edward pulls over and makes Vivian drive the Lotus the rest of the way. "Fasten your seat belts, I am taking you for the ride of your life," she says in excitement. "I'm gonna show you what this car can really do. Are you ready? Hang on."
3. Edward and Vivian make it back to his hotel, where he propositions her to accompany him inside. She takes the elevator with him to his room, which she discovers is the penthouse. What does Edward say when Vivian asks him why he rented the penthouse?

Answer: "It's the best."

Vivian delivers Edward safely back to the Regent Beverly Wilshire, where he asks her if she'll be all right getting back to her 'office'. She says that she'll take a cab with her $20, but Edward catches her waiting at the bus stop. He doesn't feel like being alone so soon after ending things with Jessica, so he walks over to Vivian with a proposition. "If you don't have any prior engagements, I'd be very pleased if you would accompany me into the hotel."

Edward has had a privileged upbringing (his first car was a limousine), and has gotten used to the best that life has to offer. Vivian is visibly taken in by the grandeur of the hotel lobby, and is even more impressed when she learns that Edward is occupying the hotel's penthouse. "Wow, great view," she exclaims, as she checks out the room's balcony. "I bet you can see all the way to the ocean from out here." Edward is careful not to follow her outside. "I'll take your word for it," he says. "I don't go out there." When Vivian asks him why, he explains that he is afraid of heights. "You are? So how come you rented the penthouse?" she asks. "It's the best," explains Edward. "I looked all around for penthouses on the first floor, but I can't find one."
4. When Vivian learns that Edward is in town for business, she hazards a guess at his profession. "That would make you a lawyer," she deduces. "What makes you think I'm a lawyer?" Edward asks. What is Vivian's reply?

Answer: "You've got that sharp, useless look about you."

Things are a little awkward in the penthouse, so Vivian tries to break the ice by making small talk. She asks Edward if he is in town for business or pleasure, and he tells her that he is in L.A. for business. "Well, let me guess," she says. "That would make you a lawyer." When Edward asks her why she thinks he is a lawyer, Vivian replies, "You've got that sharp, useless look about you." Edward chuckles at the observation. "I bet you've known a lot of lawyers," he says.

Room service arrives, and Edward pours Vivian a glass of champagne. He turns around to offer her a strawberry, and finds her chugging down the entire glass. "Why don't you try a strawberry," he asks, trying to hide his amusement. "It brings out the flavor in the champagne." Without missing a beat, Vivian takes a strawberry and says, "Oh, groovy."
5. Vivian excuses herself to use the bathroom, where Edward catches her hiding a small object behind her back. He assumes that Vivian is using drugs and asks her to leave, but it turns out that Vivian was only hiding her dental floss. What does Edward say upon learning the truth?

Answer: "It's just that... very few people surprise me."

Vivian calls out to Edward from the bathroom to tell him that the champagne has gone to her head, but Edward doesn't hear her and comes in right after her. "I said I'd be out in just a minute," she says nervously. Edward notices that she is holding a small object in her hand behind her back, and asks her what she is hiding.

When Vivian tells him it's nothing, Edward assumes the worst. "All right, look. I do not want any drugs here. I don't want any of this. Get your things and your money and please leave," he says. Vivian is indignant. "I don't do drugs, all right? I stopped doing drugs when I was 14," she says defensively. Edward doesn't drop it, and takes Vivian's hand to see what she is holding.

He doesn't expect to find what he does, so all he can manage is the obvious. "This is dental floss," he says flatly. "Yeah, so?" Vivian replies, vindicated. "I had all those strawberry seeds. And you shouldn't neglect your gums." Edward apologizes and asks her to carry on, but continues to hover in the doorway. "Are you gonna watch?" Vivian asks. "No, I'm going," Edward says, with a pause. "It's just that, uh, very few people surprise me." Vivian is unimpressed. "Yeah, well you're lucky," she replies. "Most of 'em shock the hell out of me."
6. Edward and Vivian are lying on their sides in bed, facing each other and engaging in some pillow talk. Vivian is telling Edward about her colorful past, and how she started turning tricks. "People put you down enough, you start to believe it," she confesses, prompting Edward to pay her a compliment. What is Vivian's well-observed reply?

Answer: "The bad stuff is easier to believe."

"First guy I ever loved was a total nothing," Vivian explains. "Second was worse. My mom called me a bum magnet. If there was a bum within a 50-mile radius, I was completely attracted to him. That's how I ended up here. I followed bum number three. So here I was - no money, no friends, no bum." When Edward asks if that was how she ended up in this profession, Vivian explains that she worked in some fast food outlets and parked cars at wrestling, but it wasn't enough to pay the rent. "I was too ashamed to go home," she says. "That's when I met Kit. She was a hooker and made it sound so great. So one day I did it. I cried the whole time. But then I got some regulars and, you know, it's not like anybody plans this. It's not your childhood dream."

"You could be so much more," Edward says quietly. "People put you down enough, you start to believe it," replies Vivian. Edward cannot let the moment pass without weighing in on the subject. "I think you are a very bright, very special woman," he says. It is clear that he means it. "The bad stuff is easier to believe," Vivian says, with a sly smile. "You ever notice that?"
7. Edward leaves work early to go on a date with Vivian, who is decked out in an elegant red dress and a stunning necklace that is on loan from the jewelers. Edward takes her on a private jet to San Francisco to watch "La Traviata", and they share a magical night together. At the start of the evening, Vivian says something to Edward in the hotel elevator. What does she say?

Answer: "If I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight."

Edward and Vivian are in their hotel room getting ready for the evening. Vivian emerges from the bedroom wearing an elegant red dress and long white gloves, and asks Edward if she looks okay. "Something's missing," he says. "Well, nothing else is going to fit in this dress. I'll tell ya that," Vivian replies. Edward produces a jewelry box and presents it to Vivian with a caveat. "I don't want you to get too excited," he says. "This is only on loan." As Edward helps Vivian to put on the necklace, they seem completely at ease with each other; a far cry from the first night they spent together.

As they ride down together in the elevator, Vivian asks Edward where he is taking her. "It's a surprise," he says. Vivian smiles, before saying, "If I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight." The sweet moment is witnessed by Dennis, the night elevator operator, who smiles quietly to himself. Everyone in the hotel lobby notices the handsome couple as they walk past. "When you're not fidgeting, you look very beautiful," Edward says to Vivian. "And very tall." They take the limousine to a private jet, which takes them to San Francisco to catch the opera.
8. Edward's business in L.A. is almost done, but he tells Vivian that he wants to see her again. He offers to put her up in an apartment in New York, but Vivian doesn't want to commit to anything. Before Edward leaves for the office, he says to Vivian, "I've never treated you like a _________." Once she is alone, Vivian says quietly to herself, "You just did." Which word completes Edward's quote?

Answer: prostitute

With the week coming to a close, the time has finally come for Edward and Vivian to part ways. Edward announces at breakfast that he will be going back to New York once his business in L.A. is over. Vivian knows that this moment was coming, so she tries not to meet his eye. "I'd really like to see you again," he says, as if he has read her mind. "You would?" replies Vivian, with a hopeful smile. "Yes, I would," says Edward. He goes on to explain how he has arranged for her to have an apartment and a car, and access to a wide variety of stores in New York. Vivan is visibly disappointed, and she exhales slowly before saying, "What else? You gonna leave some money by the bed when you pass through town?" Edward assures her that it wouldn't be like that, before asking her what she wants from him.

"I don't know. When I was a little girl, my mama used to lock me in the attic when I was bad, which was pretty often. And I would... I would pretend I was a princess trapped in a tower by a wicked queen. And then suddenly this knight on a white horse with these colors flying would come charging up and draw his sword. And I would wave, and he would climb up the tower and rescue me," replies Vivian. "But never in all the time that I had this dream did the knight say to me, 'Come on baby, I'll put you up in a great condo.'" Edward has to leave for work, but he makes one last attempt to reassure Vivian. "I heard everything you said. This is all I'm capable of right now. It's a very big step for me," he says. "I know," she replies. "It's a really good offer for a girl like me." Edward has to go, but before he leaves he tells her, "I've never treated you like a prostitute." Vivian shakes her head, disappointed, before saying to herself, "You just did."
9. Vivian rejects Edward's offer, saying that she is holding out for "the fairy tale", and leaves for home. The next day, before leaving for the airport, Edward asks the hotel manager to help him return the jewelry he had procured on loan for Vivian. What does Barnard Thompson, the manager of the hotel, say to Edward as he admires the jewelry?

Answer: "It must be difficult to let go of something so beautiful."

Edward is checking out of the hotel, and he is hoping that Vivian has left word for him at the front desk. "You don't have any messages for me, do you?" he asks of Barnard Thompson, the manager of the hotel. "No, I am afraid not, sir," Barnard replies. Edward seems resigned as he asks Barnard to arrange for a car to bring him to the airport. He remembers something, and presents Barnard with the jewelry box containing the necklace he had borrowed for Vivian. "One last thing," he says. "If you could possibly return this to Fred's for me, please." Barnard picks up the box, and takes a moment to admire the dazzling necklace inside. "It must be difficult to let go of something so beautiful," he says, as he closes the box. It is clear that he isn't talking about the necklace. Barnard waits a moment, before adding, "You know, Darryl also drove Ms. Vivian home yesterday."

A small smile forms on Edward's face, as Barnard assures him that he will see to it that the necklace finds its way back to the jeweler. "Thank you, Mr. Thompson," Edward says as he leaves, referring to the manager by name for the first time.
10. Edward shows up at Vivian's apartment and braves the fire escape to reunite with her. "So what happens after he climbed up the tower and rescued her?" he says, referring to the fairy tale fantasy Vivian used to dream about when she was younger. What is Vivian's response?

Answer: "She rescues him right back."

Vivian is about to leave for San Francisco, when she hears a commotion coming from the street outside. Vivian looks out her window to locate the source of the disturbance, and sees a white limousine pulling up to her apartment, with Edward sticking out of the sun roof, brandishing a bouquet of flowers and an umbrella. "Vivian! Princess Vivian! Come down!" he yells. Vivian comes out onto the fire escape and stops; a clear signal for Edward to climb up to her. "Had to be the top floor, right?" he says, as he surveys the scene. "It's the best," replies Vivian with a smile. "All right," says Edward. "I'm coming up." He uses the umbrella to pull down the ladder, and climbs up onto the fire escape with the flowers in his mouth.

He gingerly navigates the edge of the fire escape, all the while trying not to look down. Vivian relents, and they meet in the middle. "So what happens after he climbed up the tower and rescued her?" asks Edward. "She rescues him right back," replies Vivian, and they share a passionate kiss.
