Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As "Random Harvest" opens, Ronald Colman's character is walking away (escaping) from an asylum in a small English town. He was there because he had been shell-shocked as an officer in W.W.I, and had amnesia. He found a small store and made a purchase. What did he buy?

Answer: Cigarettes

Both the purchase of cigarettes and the town become important plot points
later in the film.

Ronald Colman was himself very familiar with shell-shock.
He was in W.W.I and had fought in the Battle of Ypres. He saw many
cases of that terrible condition and suffered from the effects of an
enemy weapon, mustard gas.
2. After the officer's purchase, he walked about the town and met Greer Garson's character, Paula. Since he didn't remember his name, she began to call him Smithy. Was someone nearby to tell her his real name?

Answer: no

This is reported to be Greer Garson's favorite of all her films.
(IMDB)
It seems that among amnesiacs, a very common name, such as Smith, is often given to them; so in this film it seems like a very reasonable thing to call him by that name.
3. The officer tagged along with Paula as she went to work. What was her occupation?

Answer: Cabaret singer and dancer

Greer Garson is not usually thought of as a musical star, but her song and
dance number in this film is and was, highly thought of - a truly professional
presentation. Many still consider her a strictly dramatic actress, but this
role shows a wider range.
4. While Smithy watched Paula, his new friend, work, he fainted. Why?

Answer: Flu

At the end of W.W.I a horrible strain of influenza, called Spanish Flu, struck the world. Between 20 and 40 million died, worldwide. Although Smithy had flu I think it was a different kind, because he recovered quickly with seemingly no ill effects- or maybe it was included to point out the fact that flu was prevalent during this time.
5. Because they thought that Smithy might be caught and returned to the asylum, they left town together to prevent this. They traveled to another part of England, fell in love and married. To complete their happiness, they were blessed by what?

Answer: A baby boy

At this time in the film, they lived in a charming English cottage in the
country and seemed to enjoy a perfect life. No one looked for him, as his family
thought he had been killed in the war.
6. Smithy became a writer and was invited to apply for a job on a paper. To what city did he go to apply for the job?

Answer: Liverpool

Liverpool, a city in the west of England, would be the perfect choice for
Paula and Smithy. A large city where he could make a comfortable living, it was
close to the area where they had settled and loved so much. It appeared to be
close enough to commute by train.
7. While in the city, something happened to make Smithy forget his new life and family, and remember who he really was. What happened to cause this?

Answer: He was struck by a car.

He was struck by the car and knocked out. When he awoke, he had forgotten everything that had happened recently, even his hotel and the job he was to apply for. Poor Paula was left wondering what had happened to him, for he had
forgotten her too.
8. After that incident, and remembering his former life, he went to his original home. He was welcomed with mixed feelings among the family members. Some thought he was a threat to their inheriting the family fortune. To return to his old home, among other things, he had remembered his real family name. What was it?

Answer: Rainier

Two of the choices, Rainier and St. Helens are the names of volcanic peaks
in Washington State. Conway was Ronald Colman's character in "Lost Horizon",
and Capra was the director of "Random Harvest".

Smithy had remembered that his name was Charles Rainier and he resumed his
proper place in the family business.
9. Paula, who had found him, become Smithy's secretary (he did not remember her). She, of course, did not call him Smithy anymore, but by his real name. She became unhappy with the situation, because she still loved him, and decided to go to South America. After she left, Charles (now) went to the town where they met, and while there, to the little tobacco store. This caused him to remember his past with Paula. Did this lead to a happy reunion?

Answer: yes

It was a happy and romantic conclusion, with the couple returning to the
cottage where they had spent their marriage. The baby boy had died, but little was made of this in the movie.
10. This movie was based on a book by an author who had many successful movies based on his novels. What is his name?

Answer: James Hilton

James Hilton was a prolific author who had written many popular novels of the
day that were made into movies.
The stars were no strangers to him, as they had starred in other movies made from his books. Among them were "Goodbye Mr. Chips" starring Greer Garson, and
"Lost Horizon" starring Ronald Colman. Hilton also worked on the screenplay of
"Mrs. Miniver" with Greer Garson.
