Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before the opening credits of "The Rescuers", we see a creepy old riverboat in a swamp at sunset. A little girl comes cautiously out and throws something overboard. Unbeknownst to her, she's being watched by two alligators. What does she throw into the water?

Answer: A bottle

During the opening credits, we watch the bottle's journey across the wide and lonely sea, until it makes landfall on the island of Manhattan. Who is this little girl and why has she dispatched a message in a bottle?
2. What is the name of the little girl who needs assistance?

Answer: Penny

After the opening credits we are introduced to the Rescue Aid Society, an International mouse organization, a meeting of which has been convened because the society has received an urgent request for help. Although the message, printed in pencil on lined paper, was in a bottle, it has been damaged by water. Studying it carefully, Miss Bianca can read little except 'Hurry!" and the name Penny.

She is moved with compassion and immediately volunteers for the rescue mission, even though she still knows almost nothing about the little girl who wrote the message.
3. The message found by the Rescue Aid Society has been damaged. But the address can still be read - someplace right there in New York City. Where did the little girl needing help mean the message to be delivered?

Answer: Morningside Orphanage

Penny is an orphan from the Morningside orphanage. It isn't much to go on, but if she addressed her message to the orphanage, there must be someone there who cares about her. And whoever that is might have some idea of what happened to her. So, Miss Bianca and Bernard set out on the first stage of their investigation.
4. Going to the place named by the request for help they have received, Miss Bianca and Bernard meet a cat who is a friend of the little girl who sent the message. He tells them about her, including what she wants more than anything. What is the missing child's dearest wish?

Answer: To be adopted

Rufus recalls that Penny was distressed because the people who had looked at her on Adoption Day chose another little girl instead. The cat comforted her, reminding her to have faith and never to lose heart.
5. The missing little girl has been kidnapped by Madame Medusa and Mr. Snoops and taken to Devil's Bayou. Whenever she tries to escape, Medusa's alligators find her and bring her back to the riverboat. Is she afraid of the alligators?

Answer: No

Brutus and Nero, who act like large, green dogs, annoy Penny much more than they frighten her. This is in contrast to Snoops, who lives in terror of them.
6. Why have Madame Medusa and her henchman, Mr. Snoops, kidnapped the little girl who sent the request for help?

Answer: So she can dive for a valuable diamond

Medusa and Snoops have located a pirate treasure in a cave that can be reached only by a narrow passage like a wellshaft. They are both much too large to squeeze down the hole, but Penny fits easily. Medusa is consumed with greed for one particular diamond called the Devil's Eye, which she feels sure is somewhere in the cave. So, Penny has to go down into the dark, cold, scary cave every low tide and stay searching till the rising tide begins to flood the cave.
7. When the little girl who sent the message for help gets frightened, what does she do?

Answer: She pretends it is her teddy bear that is frightened and she comforts him.

Penny is an intelligent and very brave little girl. Still, she is only six, and she's in a difficult and scary situation. So, sometimes she gets frightened or loses heart. When that happens, she hugs and comforts Teddy.
8. When Miss Bianca and Bernard find the little girl who sent the message, she asks if they brought anybody bigger, like the police. The mice admit that there's just them. They assure her though that working together, they can escape. True or false: She relies completely on the mice to get her out of her predicament.

Answer: False

Penny is a bright little girl. Once she has hope and friends to help her, she comes up with some excellent ideas for how to thwart Medusa and Snoops.
9. Does the little girl who sent the message eventually do what Madame Medusa kidnapped her to do?

Answer: Yes

Maddened by greed, and not being a nice person to begin with, Medusa forces Penny to go down into the cave one last time by holding her teddy bear hostage. This time, though, Penny has Miss Bianca and Bernard to help her. Together, they find and bring to the surface the Devil's Eye.
10. When the little girl who sent the message gets home, what happens that makes her supremely happy?

Answer: She is adopted.

The members of the Rescue Aid Society watch proudly as Penny is featured on the television news. Not only is she home safely, but she has a new family. The last we see of her, she is waving and saying hello to Miss Bianca and Bernard while the news presenter looks on in bemusement.
