Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which of these decades did De Niro appear in the most movies, which included "Flawless", "Analyze This", and "Ronin"?

Answer: 1990s

He appeared in by far the most movies in the 1990s; 24 to be exact. He's been on quite a tear in the last 15 years, turning out performances left and right.
2. In which of these films did De Niro star as an illiterate cook trying to learn how to read?

Answer: Stanley & Iris

This is probably one of De Niro's lesser known roles. It came out in 1990 and co-starred Jane Fonda as Iris King to De Niro's Stanley Everett Cox. She was a widow that De Niro asked to help him learn to read after he was fired from his line cook job.
3. In which film did De Niro star as Lieutenant Donald "Shadow" Rimgale?

Answer: Backdraft

This was a Ron Howard-directed film about Engine Company 17 in Chicago, and centers around two feuding brothers played by Kurt Russell and William Baldwin. De Niro plays a veteran fire inspector trying to track down a serial arsonist. The real star of the film, though, is the hypnotic fire itself.
4. In this film, De Niro is narrating to the audience about a woman that has captured his heart. Which film is this quote from: "When you love someone, you've gotta trust them. There's no other way. You've got to give them the key to everything that's yours. Otherwise, what's the point? And, for a while, I believed that's the kind of love I had."?

Answer: Casino

This was a quote from De Niro's character, Sam "Ace" Rothstein, from "Casino" in reference to his relationship with Ginger, played by Sharon Stone. If you've seen the film, then you know how that marriage turns out. This is one of many collaborations between De Niro and Martin Scorsese, the director, and along with "Heat", I think one of the most underrated movies of the 90s.
5. Besides "Casino", which other movie did De Niro star in with James Woods?

Answer: Once Upon a Time in America

This was a sweeping gangster epic, directed by Sergio Leone, that was released in 1984. It concerned the trials and tribulations of De Niro's and Woods's gang from their childhood in the early 1900s through Prohibition and well beyond.
6. In which of these films that De Niro co-starred with Joe Pesci, did they NOT appear on screen at the same time?

Answer: A Bronx Tale

This was Robert De Niro's directorial debut, and Joe Pesci provided a cameo at the tail end of the film.
7. Which film starred De Niro as a Hollywood director dealing with the blacklist era?

Answer: Guilty By Suspicion

Even if you're not immediately familiar with this film, the title probably gives itself away. This is a superb film, starring De Niro as David Merrill, a fictitious director forced to testify against the House Un-American Actitivites Committee. Merrill had just come home from abroad, and had heard stories of this organization's witchhunt for communist subversives in Hollywood, but hadn't realized just how serious it was.

He soon found out, and as tensions and pressures mounted, he learned that the decision he'd have to make might not be so black and white.
8. In the film "Heat", what caused De Niro's character, Neil McCauley, to turn back from his route to the airport, and his getaway, to Los Angeles and possible capture?

Answer: He had one last score to settle

As Neil and Eady were en route to a plane to take them to New Zealand, he received a call from Jon Voigt's character, Nate, saying he had learned of the location of Waingro (Kevin Gage), a newcomer to his crew that had botched an armored truck heist by killing one of the truck's guards. Murder was not in Neil's plans, and he and his crew knew that capture at that point could mean the rest of their lives in prison. Waingro had managed to elude Neil's wrath, but after Neil learned where Waingro was hiding, he simply couldn't resist risking everything to turn back and settle the score.
9. For which film was De Niro nominated for Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture at the American Comedy Awards?

Answer: Meet the Parents

He was nominated in this category for "Meet the Parents" in 2001, and had also been nominated for the same award for "Analyze This" the previous year. With the exception of "Midnight Run" in 1988, De Niro hadn't really forayed into comedies until the mid-90s and into the 2000s. With "Analyze This", its sequel, "Analyze That", as well the other three comedies mentioned here, he showed his versatility and range, proving no genre was safe.
10. Besides "The Deer Hunter and "Marvin's Room", which other movie did De Niro star in with Meryl Streep?

Answer: Falling in Love

This was the second collaboration between the two actors after "The Deer Hunter". It concerns De Niro's and Streep's characters, both married, seeing each other on a train after a chance meeting months before, and the bond that builds between them.
