Crystal needs to have a dinner party for her fiance (who turns out to be Raymond's brother) and his family so he will propose and she can get out of debt. Raymond gallantly offers to act as her butler, not knowing who her fiance is. Imagine the surprise on the faces of his brother and parents when they see him there. Crystal finally realizes that she's planning on marrying the wrong brother. "Personal Property" also starred Reginald Owen, Una O'Connor, Henrietta Crosman and E.E. Clive.

Bob's parents insist that they remain married for at least six months so as to avoid bad publicity. Kay hopes that's enough time for Bob to fall in love with her because she already loves him. Robert Taylor, Robert Young and Franchot Tone played Erich, Gottfried and Otto, respectively. They are ex-soldiers in post-WWI Germany who all fall for the same girl. One of them marries her, but they all remain friends. Released in 1938, the film also starred Margaret Sullavan, Guy Kibbee and Lionel Atwill.

Alla Nazimova plays Emmy Ritter who is imprisoned by the Nazis for sending money out of the country. Her son Mark (Taylor) gets a letter from a friend of his mother, telling him what has happened and he finds his way into the country to help her. With the help of a widowed countess and a doctor, he is able to help his mother escape from the concentration camp, and the country.

It was pretty daring for MGM to release this film in 1940 with the Nazis at the height of their power. The author of the novel the film was based on used a pen name when publishing, to protect relatives still living in Germany from retribution by the Nazis. Likewise, some cast and crew used fictitious names or were uncredited.

The film also starred Norma Shearer, Conrad Veidt, Felix Bressart and Philip Dorn.
