John Lennon had the role of Musketeer Gripweed in the film. The regiment that Gripweed was in was under the command of an inept officer. As the movie progressed Gripweed was revealed to have been a follower of Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists.
"How I Won the War" was based on a novel by Patrick Ryan and focused on a WWII commissioned officer played by Michael Crawford and the impact he had on the ranks.
Richard Lester had previously directed the Fab Four in "Hard Day's Night" and "Help". The Beatles admired his work in a film called "The Running Jumping and Standing Still Film" that Lester had done with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers and they were instrumental in getting him for their feature films. Lennon had time to work on the film in Spain in 1966 because the Beatles had stopped touring.
Lieutenant Earnest Goodbody was played by Michael Crawford. Musketeer Clapper was played by Roy Kinnear and Lee Montague had the role of Sergeant Transom.

"Get Yourself a College Girl" (1964) had performances by The Animals, The Dave Clark Five, The Standells and other musical artists. "Don't Look Back" was a 1967 Bob Dylan documentary. Trish Van Devere worked with Campbell in the 1986 release, "Uphill All The Way". Lee Remick and Steve McQueen starred in "Baby the Rain Must Fall" in 1965. Glen had a role as one of McQueen's band members. Sondra Locke and Clint Eastwood worked together in "Any Which Way You Can" (1980). Glen played a singer in the cowboy bar.

Paul Simon wrote and starred in "One Trick Pony".
