Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This film is one of my favourite films, featuring two brothers who set out on a "mission from God" to save the orphanage they grew up in from closure. Which musical film starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in the title roles of Jake and Elwood?

Answer: The Blues Brothers

Released in 1980 "The Blues Brothers" starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues, two blues musicians who grew up on the wrong side of the law. When tasked, by the Mother Superior who ran the orphanage they once lived in, to obtain money to prevent it from closure, Jake and Elwood re-form their band, The Blues Brothers, to perform a concert that leads to a spectacular car chase through the streets of Chicago.

The film itself not only featured a number of prominent musicians, such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and James Brown, but also had cameo appearances by the film's director John Landis, Steven Spielberg, John Candy, Carrie Fisher and Frank Oz.
2. The next film on my list is one of my favourite wartime films, based upon a true story. Which film featured a group of men who formed a special squadron to destroy German targets in occupied Europe, equipped with a special bomb?

Answer: The Dam Busters

Released in 1955, "The Dam Busters" starred Richard Todd as Wing Commander Guy Gibson, and Michael Redgrave as inventor Barnes Wallis. The film itself was based on Guy Gibson's book, "Enemy Coat Ahead", and starts with Wallis developing his proposal for a bomb that would destroy vital dams supplying water and electricity to German factories making weapons during World War II.

The film progresses with the formation of 617 Squadron, a specialist group of airmen, flying bombers adapted to carry Wallis' unique bomb. The climax of the film features the 617 Squadron attacking the dams, destroying two and causing widespread devastation. However, there is a scene when Wallis realises the human element of his vision to destroy the dams, as reports of the losses sustained by the squadron reach Wallis while he waits for news of the attack on the dams.
3. Another of my favourite films is one set in an American high school, featuring a group of teenage boys who embark on a quest to get into a nightclub. Which Canadian/American produced film features students at a school named Angel Beach High?

Answer: Porky's

Released in 1982, "Porky's" helped kick off a whole genre of high school based teen sex comedy films.

It features a group of boys who are obsessed with sex who embark on a quest to get into a nightclub located in a swamp that they believe has girls who are engaged in prostitution. However, club owner Porky - along with his brother, who is also a corrupt local sheriff - trick the boys before running them out of town. This leads one of the group to try to get his revenge, only to be badly beaten by Porky's men, thus prompting his friends to gain revenge by destroying Porky's club.

Although now well received critically, "Porky's" was a financial success at the box office. However, the film's two sequels "Porky's II: The Next Day" and "Porky's Revenge" proved to be less successful.
4. One of my favourite films from the 1980s features Bill Murray portraying an oddball groundskeeper. What is the title of the film that has Murray locked in a battle of wits against a gopher digging holes in a golf course?

Answer: Caddyshack

Released in 1980, "Caddyshack" is centred around an exclusive, members only golf course. When a brash, rich man named Al Czervik (played by Rodney Dangerfield) turns up at the club, he upsets the club members, leading one of the member to challenge Czervik to a golf match. However, during the match Czervik is hit by his own golf ball and, feigning injury, enlists a young golf caddy to take his place and play with his partner Ty Webb (played by Chevy Chase).

Set against this plot is another in which groundskeeper Carl Spackler (played by Bill Murray) is locked in a battle of wits to kill a gopher. This finally leads Spackler to plant explosives - in the shape of animals - around the golf course in the hope that it will kill the gopher.

As the golf match reaches the final hole, the ball Czervik needs to win is stuck on the edge of the hole. However, the explosives planted by Spackler are set off, causing the ball to roll into the hole.

In 1988 a less successful sequel "Caddyshack 2" was released, however only Chevy Chase returned to reprise his role.
5. One of my favourite Marvel films has actor Robert Downey Jr. playing a wealthy industrialist named Tony Stark. Which Marvel series of films sees him play the title character?

Answer: Iron Man

The first film in what has become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, "Iron Man" starred Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark - an egotistic, playboy billionaire. When Stark is injured and captured by Afghan rebels, he constructs an armoured suit. This suit is powered by a device implanted in his chest to keep him alive - ironically placed there to stop shrapnel from one of Stark's own weapons reaching Stark's heart.

Escaping, Stark returns home and embarks on building a better suit. Stark, though, is unaware that the manager of Stark Industries, Obadiah Stane, was behind Stark's capture. After getting hold of Stark's first Iron Man suit, Stane has it reverse engineered. This leads Stane to fight Stark in a dramatic finale.

In a post credit scene, Stark finds himself confronted by Nick Fury - head of an organisation called S.H.E.I.L.D. - who tries to enlist Stark into his organisation.
6. One of my favourite Disney films features a queen, cursed with a power to create snow and ice. What is the title of this Disney film, that features the character Queen Elsa?

Answer: Frozen

Released in 2013, "Frozen" is the tale of two princesses living in a fictional Scandinavian country named Arendelle.

As children, the elder sister (Elsa) accidentally hurts her younger sister (Anna) resulting in their parents closing the castle gates and Elsa staying away from Anna. When Elsa becomes queen though, an argument with her sister sees Elsa's powers to create snow and ice spiral out of control.

For a Disney film, "Frozen" is rare in that it has two, main female characters in the lead who are both heroines. Meanwhile those providing the love interest (Hans and Kristoff) are in supporting roles. There is also a twist in the film when Hans - initially portrayed as a hero - is revealed to be the villain as the storyline comes to a close.

A short film entitled "Frozen Fever" was released in 2015, playing before the live action Disney film version of "Cinderella".
7. Next on my list of favourite films is a film that sparked a number of sequels. Which film series featured Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York policeman who kept having a bad day?

Answer: Die Hard

Based on the novel "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp, the first "Die Hard" film sparked a franchise starring Bruce Willis as John McClane, a New York detective with an unfortunate habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In the first "Die Hard" film, McClane wishes to be reunited with his estranged wife, Holly, at a Christmas party she is attending. However, the building is taken over by what appears at first to be a terrorist organisation. Evading the terrorists, McClane realises they are in fact trying to steal millions of dollars worth of bearer bonds.

Successive "Die Hard" films see McClane take on renegade soldiers trying to free a South American dictator. In addition, McClane also takes on the brother of the terrorist he killed in the first "Die Hard" film, as well as cyber-terrorists. In the fifth film in the "Die Hard" franchise, McClane teams up with his son to take on renegade Russians intent on obtaining weapons grade uranium.
8. Created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker, this favourite film of mine always reminds me of the classic children's TV series created by the late Gerry Anderson. Which of the following Stone and Parker films features marionettes as the lead characters?

Answer: Team America: World Police

Released in 2004, "Team America: World Police" is a spoof and a satirical comedy film that parodies big budget action films such as "Die Hard", "Mission Impossible", and the "Rambo" films.

Using marionettes instead of actors appearing on screen, the film focuses on an elite team of global law enforcers who end up causing more damage than the terrorists they are after. This leads the Film Actors Guild (F.A.G) to start a protest against Team America's actions. When one of the team (Gary) leaves Team America, the others are captured on a mission after their base is blown up by the film maker, Michael Moore.

Realising that he is their own hope, Gary heads to North Korea to rescue Team America, and foil North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il's plot to destroy the world with weapons of mass destruction.
9. Car chase films are popular, but which of the following films that are personal favourites of mine, features Michael Caine leading a daring heist in Turin, ending in a cliff hanging ending?

Answer: The Italian Job (1969)

Starring Michael Caine, the original version of "The Italian Job" featured a daring heist of gold bullion.

Having completed his prison sentence, Charlie Croker (Caine) conspires with the widow of his friend to steal gold from security vans in the middle of Turin. Hiring a computer expert (played by comedian Benny Hill) to create a traffic jam in Turin, Croker and his gang hi-jack the security vans, load the bullion into three BMC Mini's before making their escape in a spectacular car chase.

Having rendezvoused with a coach carrying the rest of the gang, the Mini's are driven on board and emptied of the bullion. However, the coach driver gets drunk as the gang celebrates, eventually losing control and ending up skidding the coach. As a result, the back of the coach is left hanging over the edge of a cliff with the gold sliding towards the open doors at the back of the coach.
10. The "James Bond" film series is one of the most popular spy film series of films to be made, but which comedy spoof film sparked a number of sequels that featured Mike Myers as the principal character?

Answer: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

When a plot to assassinate Powers failed in the 1960s, Powers has agreed to go into cryogenic suspension, given that Powers' nemesis. Dr Evil (also performed by Myers) also froze himself after escaping.

Re-awakened in the 1990s - when Dr Evil returns - Powers is teamed up with the daughter of his former assistant, and together they track down Dr Evil to his lair. Although Austin tries to charm his new assistant, Vanessa Kensington(played by Liz Hurley), Vanessa rebuffs his advances, seeing them as outdated and sexist.

Tracking Dr Evil to his lair in a volcano. Powers finds that Dr Evil is planning to detonate a nuclear warhead at the Earth's core, causing widespread volcanic activity. Although thwarting Dr Evil's plans, Dr Evil escapes again, activating the auto destruct mechanism for his base to aid his escape.
