Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Sector of Omaha Beach does Captain Miller go ashore on D-Day?

Answer: Dog Green

The Dog Green sector was east of Vierville and was where the Dog One exit was located.
2. What was the number of the landing craft that Captain Miller was in?

Answer: PA30-11

The "Higgins" boats brought the Allies ashore the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. They were incredibly fast and could carry tanks, as well as troops.
3. Why does Sergeant Horvath want to see "Plenty of beach between men"?

Answer: "5 men is a juicy opportunity, 1 man is a waste of ammo"

The Germans rained down a wall of led from their pillboxes. If you were on your own, they were less likely to make you a target for their MG-42's.
4. What is the number on the Higgins boat that is seen on fire?

Answer: PA30-31

Many of the boats were hit by artillery shells while approching the beach head, and there was nothing the soldiers inside could do but pray.
5. What did Captain Miller say when asked where the rally-point was?

Answer: "Anywhere but here!"

The bottom of the beach was a death trap, getting to a safe spot up the beach was the only concern. Actually, Miller does order the troops to the sea wall slightly after he gives this order.
6. What was the 104th Medical Battalion supposed to do?

Answer: Set up field operations

Instead of guns, the 104th walked up the beach carrying typewriters.
7. When Captain Miller told the member of the Navy beach battalion that all the armour was foundering in the channel, what reason did the soldier give for still clearing the obstacles?

Answer: Those were his orders

Hundreds of iron "hedgehogs" cluttered the beach. They provided cover for the infantry but had to be destroyed so the tanks could get ashore. Unfortunatly, only a small fraction of the armour dispatched actually made it ashore.
8. The soldiers who first made it to the sea wall were, according to Sergeant Horvath, the leftovers from what companies?

Answer: Fox, Able, and George Companies

While they played a major part in D-Day, they did not go ashore any beach.
9. When Medic Wade is first seen on the beach, what was the name of the soldier he was working on?

Answer: Deforest

Deforest was going to die from his wound but Wade didn't want to leave him because he was a battalion surgeon. They ended up closing up his wound, only for him to be shot in the head seconds later.
10. There were two possible cuts that could have been the Dog One exit. Captain Miller knew it was the cut on the right, because he knew this city was to the west.

Answer: Vierville

Neuville was the town that Private Ryan was believed to be in early in the movie. Cherbourg was the deep water port that needed to be captured before moving on Paris, which is of course the French capital.
11. This weapon is Private Reiben's weapon of choice. He had to ditch his first one because it tried to drown him, so Sergeant Horvath told him to find a replacement.

Answer: Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)

The B.A.R. was a high power automatic rifle that was in a class of its own. A very cool weapon.
12. What was the name of the soldier who used a flamethrower to clear out a German pillbox?

Answer: Doyle

Jackson and Mellish were of course part of the group of eight who set out to find Private Ryan. Debernardo was the name of one of the soldiers who was sent out to make their way up the hill when they were all hiding in cover behind a small wall.
13. Private Caparzo found a Hitler Youth knife on one of the dead Germans, he then gave it to Private Mellish, who then said that it was now what?

Answer: a shabbat challah cutter

I don't know what this means, but that's what he said.
14. Besides France, Sergeant Horvath had collected dirt from what other two places?

Answer: Africa and Italy

Sergeant Horvath kept a container of dirt from everywhere he fought in the war. The only three that can be read are France, Italy, and Africa.
15. Which of Private Ryans' brothers was killed on Omaha Beach?

Answer: Sean

Peter was killed at Utah Beach, and Daniel was killed in New Guinea. James is of course, the survivor of the four.
