"Scent of a Woman".....Image of a Man Quiz

Pacino is unbelievable in this excellent film. So far out of the usual characters he portrays. A childish prank while in the Army, blinded him, not only damaging his sight, but also, his emotions.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Charlie (Charles) Simms from?

Answer: Gresham, Oregon

Attending Baird School on student aid made Charles Simms the butt of teasing among the rich kids. Charlie truly deserved to be at Baird because he'd earned it, the rich kids' fathers were former students and therefore made sure their sons attended their Alma Mater.

The last thing on these boys' minds was studying. Their parents indulged them with anything they desired. They had no appreciation for Baird. It was expected that they attend an ivy league school.
2. What was the name of the scholarship that Charles Simms won?

Answer: The Young American Merit Scholarship

Charlie appreciated the scholarship and did his best at school. What he never realized, until he later made the acquaintance of Lt. Col. Frank Slade, was that the qualities that he possessed and never considered worth very much, were priceless and could not be taught at Baird or any other school.
3. What kind of car(make) did the Board of Trustees' give to Headmaster Trask?

Answer: a Jaguar

The Headmaster took his position at Baird very seriously. He kept his nose to the grindstone on all school issues, as the Board was always watching him and the donations from the alumni whose sons now attended Baird, kept coming in. His goal was to keep it that way, even if it meant "schmoozing" the wealthy former students of his beloved Baird.
4. What was Charlie seeking and what did he finally find, on the School's Bulletin Board?

Answer: an ad for a job for Thanksgiving weekend

Although his schoolmates were all planning trips for the holiday weekend that their wealthy fathers were paying for and they asked Charlie if he wanted to join them knowing he was on aid, Charlie accepted his financial position as gracefully as he could and went forward with his decision to work for Thanksgiving weekend. He wanted to earn his plane fare home for Christmas.
5. What did Charlie and George Willis witness when they were walking back from the school library that fateful night?

Answer: their friends rigging a practical joke on the streetlight.

Charlie and George saw three of their schoolmates, George's friends, rigging an exploding balloon on the streetlight above the parking lot. Suddenly a female teacher walked by, who George distracted so she would not notice the deed being done. The next day, when the joke came to pass and the headmaster got soaked as a result, the female teacher came forward and Charle Simms and George Willis were identified as witnesses and therefore called into Headmaster Trask's office.

When Trask's questions bore no fruit, he sent Willis out of the room in order to question Charlie alone.
6. Trask then made Charlie understand that it was up to him, Trask, to recommend one single student who was on student aid to be granted a scholarship to college and that Trask had submitted Charlie's name. What was the name of the college?

Answer: Harvard

Charlie understood that he was being blackmailed by Trask in order to give the names of the other students involved in the practical joke. When he left and met George outside, George said the Headmaster was playing "good cop, bad cop" with them. He said that it was the general attitude of the boys to stick together and never leave anyone "twisting in the wind".

The Headmaster gave them Thanksgiving weekend to "think it over". When they returned, there would be a hearing of the student council and at that time, if they did not come forward with names... they would both be expelled.
7. George's father was an alumnus of the school and a huge contributor, but George told Charlie that they "would not tell their parents about this" and for Charlie to give him a call over the holiday weekend so they could discuss this further. Where was Charlie supposed to call George?

Answer: Stowe, Vermont

Charlie went on his job interview with a queasy feeling. He was concerned about Headmaster Trask as he knew that Baird was his future. Though he did not want it to end, he would not compromise his principles by snitching on the others.
8. When Charlie finally found the job ad, what was it for?

Answer: babysitting a blind senior citizen.

Mrs. Rossi, a niece of Col. Frank Slade, placed an ad for someone to look after her blind uncle who lived in her guest house out back. Her and her husband wanted to go to Albany for the weekend. Charlie got the job; no one else showed up! Charlie's meeting with the Col. was not an easy one. Slade was furious that his niece wanted a babysitter for him.

He had big plans! His initial reaction to Charlie was to degrade him, which Charlie handled wonderfully. Well, it looked like he would have to have company on his journey.
9. When Col. Slade realized his niece and her family had not yet left for their trip to Albany, what was the t.v. family he compared them to?

Answer: the Flintstones

Slade resented being blind. Most of all he resented the reasons he had become blind, the foolishness of youth, carelessness. He had become cynical and bitter. Not believing in any quality being left in people or in the world. Now here was this little "snaildart from the Pacific Northwest" standing in front of him! Oh boy, well, he would have to deal with it!
10. When Charlie asked Col. Slade if they were going somewhere, where did he say they were off to?

Answer: Freak show central...New York City

Charlie was nervous about going away. He was not expecting it and was not at all prepared. But he realized they were definitely going, as Slade barked orders to Charlie on packing his bags.
11. When did Col. Slade threaten to kill Charlie ?

Answer: when Charlie first grabbed is arm in his house

Col. Slade felt that it was he who should grab Charlie's arm, never vice versa. His self-esteem was as fragile as glass and he was very rough around the edges. Not at all the type that Charlie was used to.
12. What was name of the stewardess on the plane to New York?

Answer: Daphne

This is when Slade began to open up to Charlie Simms. He began to share his feelings about his favorite subject... women. As the Colonel spoke of one of his favorite subjects, his eyes brightened and it made Charlie smile and realize that Col. Slade really liked women!
13. When they arrived in NYC, in which hotel did they stay?

Answer: The Waldorf Astoria

Slade had stayed at that hotel back in the days when he was on Lyndon Johnson's staff.
14. When Slade took Charlie for a drink and they joined "Donna" sitting alone at her table, what did she say "Michael" thought the tango was?

Answer: hysterical

Slade escorted Donna to the dance floor and danced the Tango with her. Much to the pleasure of those who looked on. Though afraid of "making a mistake", Donna was charmed and pleased at how wonderful a dancer Slade was. Slade informed her that if you make a mistake in the tango and "get tangled up, just tango on".
15. Where did Slade want to take Charlie for Thanksgiving dinner?

Answer: to his brother Willie's house

Moving along with Slade's plan, he wanted to see his older brother Willie, once more. When they showed up on the front steps and his nephew Randy answered the door, there was an unwelcome feeling, but it was Thanksgiving.
16. When Randy was disrespectful to Slade at the dinner table and Slade jumped up and grabbed him. What type of hold did he use?

Answer: Ranger Choke Hold

Charlie was upset by the way the family was treating Slade. It seemed that at one time he had lost all their respect for his wild ways but Charlie still did not agree with their treatment of him and he gently told them so.
17. On the morning of the infamous test drive in the Ferrari, when Col. Slade lied in bed depressed, Charlie told him that George Willis decided to go home and speak to his father "about helping us". What did Col. Slade advise him to watch out for?

Answer: the "us" part

Col. Slade began to realize just what Charlie was made of. The kind of dignity this young man had. He felt that this boy was going to be crushed by the ways of the world for his innocence.
18. When Col. Slade was test driving the Ferrari, with Charlie in the passenger seat, they were stopped by a police office for speeding, what was the officer's name?

Answer: Police Officer Gore

The Col. was thrilled driving the Ferrari. Charlie was petrified as they sped through the back streets. How this officer did not pick up on the fact that Col. Slade was driving blind, is difficult to comprehend!
19. When Manny arranged the rendezvous with the prostitute for Col. Slade, what was her apartment number?

Answer: 17E

The Col. asked Charlie how he looked before he went up to see the prostitute and Charlie smiled. He was glad for the Col. who was all dressed up and smelling of Bay Rum. Charlie felt the Col. deserved to be happy, if even for a short while. While he waited in the car he called George Willis who told him he was going home and that he wanted his father's help, contrary to what he told Charlie before he left, because Trask was "out of control" about this! Charlie hung up feeling desolate. But... not losing his resolve.
20. When they got back to the hotel room, after the Ferrari test drive, the Col. was acting strange. He asked Charlie to go out and buy him a cigar. As Charlie walked through the hotel lobby on his errand, he stopped and turned back. When he got back to the suite and walked into the Col.'s bedroom what was the Col. getting prepared to do?

Answer: shoot himself

Charlie was paralyzed with fear as he watched Col. Slade, in full army uniform, loading his gun. Charlie asked the Col. to give him the gun, but he refused. The Col. told Charlie that he, himself was "bad", "rotten" and Charlie countered, telling the Col. that he was not bad, he was "just in pain".
21. When the Col. was holding Charlie and threatening to shoot them both, screaming that he had "no life" that he was "in the dark", what were the two reasons that Charlie told Col. Slade that he had to live for and that he did better than anyone else he'd ever seen?

Answer: dance the tango; drive a Ferrari

Upon hearing that, the Col. suddenly lost his urge to die. He looked on in this boy's direction and realized how deeply this young inexperienced boy from the Pacific Northwest was able to feel another's pain; how much compassion and understanding he possessed. He didn't tell Charlie, but he knew...
22. The Col. then told Charlie that most people did nice things because they wanted something in return, but that Charlie did them why?

Answer: because he meant it

The Col. then asked for a drink and Charlie offered him a cup of coffee. Col. Slade began to share his thoughts with Charlie, how he would love to bury his head in a mound of curls of a woman's hair and then wake up with her the next day and Charlie asked him why he couldn't someday have that; telling him he was a good travel companion, and the Col.smiled... Charlie made him feel good, even if he was exaggerating a bit.
23. As Charlie was leaning down to the limo window to say goodbye to Col. Slade, when they were dropping him off at school, what did the Col. do to Charlie?

Answer: ran his hand along the planes of his face.

Col. Slade had come to like this decent boy. Charlie had softened his heart and though he was blind, and they were only gone a few days, he felt as though he had grown a great deal just knowing that this young man existed, in a world where Col. Slade believed those qualities didn't exist any longer.
24. When Col. Slade sat beside Charlie at Assembly where the case was being heard, he stood up to make his points known. He said he always knew the right thing to do, he just never did it. Why?

Answer: because it was too hard

Col. Slade addressed everyone at this meeting. As he entered, he had heard Baird being called a "cradle of leadership". This school was supposed to prepare these boys for manhood. Prepare them to be leaders and Charlie had what leaders should have and that was Integrity. Let him go on... don't punish him because he would not come forward and snitch on his classmates just to save his own neck.
25. What was the English name of the fragrance Ms. Downes was wearing?

Answer: Flowers from a Brook

When Ms. Downes approached them to compliment the Col. on his speech, you realized that the Colonel's life was about to change... if not with her, then someone else. Charlie Simms had opened his heart.
