Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which brother fell out of the bobsled while being pursued by the townsfolk?

Answer: Benjamin

The bobsled was loaded down with 15 people, including six feisty kidnapped young ladies, so it seemed inevitable that someone would fall out. In real life, if he had fallen out, he probably would not have been able to have gotten back in before being overtaken by the townspeople.
2. Which brother barely missed being clobbered by a snow shovel-wielding town gentleman, while trying to lure his bride-to-be out of her house?

Answer: Gideon

Gideon imitated a cat's meow to try to get Alice to come out looking for her cat. Exactly why he thought Alice would come, instead of her suitor or father, is not clear. When Alice's suitor saw Gideon kneeling in the snow meowing for all he was worth, he grabbed a snow shovel and sneaked up to whack Gideon over the head with it. Thankfully, Benjamin came along just in time to insure that it was the town suitor who collapsed from a blow to the head, rather than Gideon!
3. During the barn dance scene, one of the brothers was unexpectedly jostled by one of the town gentlemen, nearly knocking him over. Rather than start a fight, this brother non verbally invited his opponent to a gentlemanly game of balance beam wrestling. Who was this conciliatory brother?

Answer: Daniel

Daniel had very few distinctive lines, and very few distinctive actions in the movie. He always seemed a bit more bashful and pensive than some of the other brothers. Too bad the town man knocked him off the balance boards!
4. Which brother did Gideon sock in the jaw after dressing him down?

Answer: Adam

In a particularly poignant scene, youngest brother Gideon told Adam what he thought of him for hiding out in the trapping cabin and not reconciling with Millie after their fight. It was evident that, as Gideon said, Adam could very well have "licked the tar out of" him. But Adam knew Gideon was right, and didn't retaliate when Gideon hit him.
5. Which brother was once reputed to have "smelled so sweet"?

Answer: Frank

The name Frank, in this case, was short for "Frankincense", a perfume given to the Christ child by the Magi in the Bible. The boys' mother, searching for a Bible name starting with "F", settled on "... Frankincense... because he smelled so sweet". Evidently, the brothers had given Frank such a hard time about his name for so long, that merely mentioning the word "Frankincense" was enough to turn him dangerously berserk.
6. Who was the only brother to retain a part of his beard after being cleaned up and civilized by Millie?

Answer: Caleb

The goatee / fu manchu makes Caleb easy to spot in all the scenes from the "breakfast in bathrobes" scene through to the end of the film.
7. Which brother couldn't find a seat while playing musical chairs, right before Adam entered the room, ending their fun?

Answer: Gideon

Gideon kind of fell between two chairs, much to the amusement the other players. Adam didn't seem too impressed to come in and see them playing games when there was a serious likelihood they were about to be invaded and possibly killed by the town folks.
8. Which brother confided to Millie that he wanted to leave the farm and live somewhere else?

Answer: Benjamin

Benjamin seemed to be typical of the six unmarried brothers - after getting a real dose of feminine attention at the barn raising (and demolition), the brothers felt like lonesome polecats and wanted to get out and get married. Benjamin was just the first one to make his thoughts known to Millie or Adam.
9. Which brother sang the line, "Sun's gettin' shinery, to spotlight the finery - spring, spring, spring!"?

Answer: Ephraim

In the song "Spring, Spring, Spring" several of the brothers sang solos to their brides-to-be. According to the CD booklet released with the Original Motion Picture Sound Track, the beautiful voice heard here is not that of actor Jacques d'Amboise, who played Ephraim, but one of several singers whose voices were dubbed in to substitute for some of the actors.

It is not clear from this source which vocalist sang Ephraim's line, but non-acting vocalists credited in this song include M. Spergel, C. Parlato, Robert Wacker, Alan Davies, Gene Lanham, and Bill Lee.
10. Which brother said, "What do I need manners for?"?

Answer: Adam

Adam was already married. Upon observing his brothers displaying their newly-obtained good manners to the town girls at the barn raising, Adam said wryly to Millie, "Shall I escort you to the ball, ma'me?" She said it wouldn't hurt for him to learn some manners, too. His memorable reply - "What do I need manners for? I already got me a wife!"
