Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Miles and Jack visit Miles' mother for her birthday, we learn a little about his family, none of whom really have much to do with the rest of the story. What is his sister's name?

Answer: Wendy

His mother (MaryLouise Burke) mentions to Miles (Paul Giamatti) during their dinner, that she recently talked to Wendy, and she wants them all to get together the next day for her birthday. Miles leaves his mother's house before she wakes up the next morning in order to avoid this meeting.

The only other time Wendy is mentioned is at the end of the movie, when Maya (Virginia Madsen) is telling Miles how much she loved his book. The book is partially autobiograhical, so Wendy is mentioned in it. Apparently, Miles writes of his sister as a real wreck.
2. Miles' friend Jack is an actor. In "Sideways" Jack plays a recurring character on the soap opera "One Life to Live". This character exists only in the movie and never appeared on the actual show. What is his name?

Answer: Derek Sommersby

Jack (Thomas Haden Church) was a soap star briefly during the '90s. Then, according to him, was a regular on a couple of series, and now mostly does commercial and voice-over work. He informs every girl he sees about this when he flirts with them. Also, even though it isn't mentioned in the movie, Jack's last name is Cole.
3. What is the name of the man at the golf course who is offended by Jack when he and Miles pass by him?

Answer: Walt Hendricks

Walt Hendricks (Phil Reeves), credited as "Vacationing Dr. Walt Hendricks" asks Jack to watch his language as he and Miles walk by him and his grandson. Jack is uttering some very strong innuendos, so it is easy to see why Hendricks is upset by this. Phil Reeves is actually the high school principal from Alexander Payne's "Election".
4. Miles considers the winery Frass Canyon to be a joke. What is frass?

Answer: Insect excrement

"Frass" is just one example of the vocabulary used in "Sideways". Some other examples include "abattoir" (slaughterhouse), "quaffable" (drinkable), and "extricated" (removed). The script also has plenty of four-letter words. Frass Canyon is where Miles calls his book editor, and learns that his novel will not be getting published by the only publishing house that has shown any interest.

He is furious, and tries to get one of the Frass Canyon wine pourers to give him enough wine to get drunk. When the pourer refuses, Miles then proceeds to make an idiot of himself by drinking from the spit bucket.
5. What poet does Miles accidentally quote when describing his own life?

Answer: Bukowski

"I am a smudge of excrement on a piece of tissue paper surging out to sea with a million tons of raw sewage," is Miles' lament after he learns his book will not be published. When Jack tells him that the line is beautiful and original, Miles admits that he plagiarized it. He also compares himself to "a thumbprint on the window of a skyscraper".
6. What actor is in the photograph that Miles glances at after he steals money from his mother's dresser drawer?

Answer: Paul Giamatti

The picture is actually of himself! It is the actor who plays his character. It is a snapshot of a teenaged Paul and his real-life father Bart Giamatti. Bart was once the Comissioner for Major League Baseball. The scene is very depressing, because of Miles' clear self-loathing about what he is doing.
7. When Miles drives the golf ball back at the impatient golfers who are behind him and Jack, does he hit one of them?

Answer: No

He doesn't hit any of the four golfers, but he does hit their golf cart! An interesting fact about the scene is that Rex Pickett, the author of the novel "Sideways" is the one who actually completed the shot. Paul Giamatti's golf skills were so poor, he couldn't even come close!
8. What is NOT one of the towns that Miles and Jack visit on their trip?

Answer: San Francisco

Solvang is where Jack has the ill-fated rendezvous with waitress Cammi (Missy Doty). Los Olivos is where the guys pick up Maya and Stephanie (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), before the four of them go to a winery and have a picnic. Buellton is where The Windmill Inn and Hitching Post Restaurant are.

They never stop in San Francisco, but there is a sign saying how far away it is when they are on the road.
9. What saint is honored in the name of the hospital that Miles takes Jack to, after Stephanie breaks his nose for lying to her?

Answer: Santa Ynez

The name "Santa Ynez" is clearly visible as Miles and Jack walk out of the hospital. Jack is claiming that the only reason he won't sue Stephanie for attacking him is to protect his fiancee. Miles doesn't buy this, and neither do we. Santa Ynez is a real hospital in Solvang, California.
10. What movie do Miles and Jack watch in their hotel room?

Answer: The Grapes of Wrath

The name of the movie is a delicious pun considering the circumstances in the scene. Both Jack and Miles are wrathful. Jack, because he is almost certain that Miles divulged to Maya the fact that Jack is engaged, and Miles, because his honesty cost him his relationship with Maya.

The two of them are fermenting in their own anger, much like grapes in the wine that they have been sampling the whole trip!
