Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Robert Graysmith's profession at The San Francisco Chronicle?

Answer: cartoonist

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Robert whose character is really on the outside looking in. Robert is present at the staff meeting when the first Zodiac cipher letter is read and becomes intrigued with cracking the code. His colleagues at the paper don't take him very seriously and he is often excluded from meetings and generally ignored.

He even finds out later that his co-workers refer to him as retarded.
2. Who cracks the code from the Zodiac's first published cipher?

Answer: A married couple

A couple who subscribes to the publication takes a whack at cracking the code and is able to put it into a readable format. The cipher speaks about the Zodiac's lust for killing but doesn't reveal his name, as the Zodiac has promised in the letters he has written to the paper. There are approximately 18 characters on the letter that are not decipherable - could these actually be the Zodiac's true identity?

When the cipher originally arrives, Robert tells Paul Avery (Robert Downey, Jr.) that he doesn't expect the killer to reveal his identity and he is correct. This intrigues Avery and he and Robert strike up a friendship based on mutual obsession with the Zodiac killings.
3. What is Inspector David Toschi's favorite snack?

Answer: animal crackers

Toschi is dedicated to his job at the San Francisco police department. He and his partner, Inspector Armstrong (played by Anthony Edwards), have been working together for years and have an great relationship. The Zodiac murders prove to be their toughest investigation and the two inspectors work closely with each other in hopes to catching the killer. Toschi is married and even his wife seems to understand the close relationship he has with Armstrong.

They never say why Toschi prefers animal crackers so much but Armstrong keeps a supply of them on hand for his partner.
4. The Zodiac persuades a female motorist to pull over, claiming one of her tires is loose and he'll fix it for her. Which tire?

Answer: rear passenger

She watches him adjust the rear passenger tire from the safety of her car and then he drives off after assuring her it is safe. However, as soon she accelerates, the tire comes off completely. The Zodiac backs up and offers to take her to a service station for help. Little does he realize at the time but the motorist has an infant with her.

When he sees this, he threatens to kill the motorist and injure her baby. She then jumps out of the moving car with her baby to safety. She later identifies her abductor to police as the Zodiac.
5. Paul receives a greeting card from the Zodiac killer. What holiday does the card depict?

Answer: Halloween

The card also contains a bloodied piece of cloth from one of the Zodiac's victims, a taxi driver named Paul Lee Stine. Avery is initially upset that the Zodiac sought him out personally, but then uses the attention surrounding the events to advance his career.

He becomes obsessed with the Zodiac killings and even tries to prove who the Zodiac's first victim is. However, Paul slips into alcoholism and his work starts to deteriorate, eventually forcing him to leave The Chronicle and the publicity behind.
6. When the police raid Arthur Leigh Allen's house, what animals are present inside?

Answer: squirrels

Squirrels are everywhere - in the freezer, in cages and on the shelves in his bedroom. It is really gross and it is obvious that Allen isn't wrapped to tight. Allen is the police's biggest suspect and they need a sample of his handwriting to prove that he wrote the letters and is in fact the Zodiac killer.

However, his handwriting samples prove not to match that of the Zodiac's and the police are forced to pursue other suspects.
7. When Robert meets Melanie for their first date, what does she order for dinner?

Answer: penne with vodka sauce

Their first date isn't your typical one. Robert tells Melanie that he is working on the Zodiac case and that his friend Paul is going to investigate a lead that very night. When Melanie says how dangerous she thinks his job is, Robert gets worried and decides that he had better go home and wait for Paul to call him to ensure that he is safe. Melanie goes with Robert and falls asleep at his apartment while waiting for the call.

After this interesting first date, Melanie and Robert start seeing each other and eventually get married and have children.

She leaves Robert years later however when his obsession with the Zodiac murders consumes his life, leaving no room for their marriage.
8. Years go by and not a word from the Zodiac - no murders, no letters. Then one day, a letter is sent to The Chronicle. Who is accused of writing this letter?

Answer: Inspector Toschi

Toschi claims innocence but Internal Affairs believes that he wrote the letter to generate interest in the Zodiac after the trail has been cold for years. Toschi is eventually transferred from homicide but later is exonerated from writing the letter.

Rick Marshall and Arthur Leigh Allen are both Zodiac suspects. Rick Marshall becomes the focus of the investigation for a while when it appears that perhaps his handwriting matches that of the Zodiac's letters but that trail goes cold when not enough evidence is gathered.
9. Toschi, Graysmith and other members of The Chronicle and the police department attend a viewing of what movie, which is loosely based on the Zodiac case they are all investigating?

Answer: Dirty Harry

In "Dirty Harry", the serial killer's name is Scorpio. Inspector Toschi leaves during the movie in disgust because the Zodiac murders which have become his life's obsession are being used as entertainment for the masses. At the end of the movie showing, Robert comes up to Toschi to introduce himself and tries to talk about the case, but the inspector dismisses him immediately and leaves the theater annoyed.
10. One of the final scenes of the movie shows Robert coming face to face with Arthur Leigh Allen, whom he definitively believes is the Zodiac killer. Where does this encounter take place?

Answer: hardware store

Robert wants to see Allen for himself and tracks him down at the hardware store where Allen is working. At first Allen doesn't know who he is but then he seems to recognize Robert, who quickly departs from the store.

After the movie ends, there is a narrative of what happens to the main characters. Arthur Allen Leigh becomes the police's prime suspect again for the Zodiac murders, but dies of a heart attack before the police can actually arrest him. Robert Graysmith goes on to write two best-selling novels on the Zodiac and Paul Avery dies from alcohol-related causes.
