Singer Judy Collins recorded the song in 1975 as part of an album and the song was released as a single. The song reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed for 11 weeks. In 1977 Judy Collins had a hit with this song again, when it reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1985 Barbra Streisand had a hit with this song, with an additional verse by Stephen Sondheim, and it rose to number 25 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Chart. An additional verse was added by Stephen Sondheim for this version.

"Send in the Clowns" has also been recorded by Lou Rawls, Kenny Rogers, Shirley Bassey, Bing Crosby, Grace Jones, Mel Torme, the Brotherhood of Man, Elaine Page, Tom Jones, to name but a few. Frank Sinatra recorded the song in 1973 and it became Stephen Sondheim's most popular song after Sinatra's recording.
