Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This highly controversial movie is the futuristic vision of a British teenager who is obsessed with violence and Ludwig van Beethoven. It is also highly acclaimed and considered to be one of Stanley Kubrick's best.

Answer: A Clockwork Orange

"A Clockwork Orange" was first released in 1971 and considered to be one of the most controversial movies of its day. Malcolm McDowell plays young hooligan Alex de Large, who earns a shorter prison term for taking part in a brainwashing experiment. He was actually much older than the character he played.
2. Which movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki won "Best Animated Film" at the 2003 Academy Awards?

Answer: Spirited Away

"Spirited Away" is an amazing anime epic about a ten-year old girl named Chihiro, who is moving to a new town with her parents. On the way, they stop at an abandoned theme park where her parents get turned into pigs! Chihiro is then trapped in the spirit world with many talking animals, human-like creatures, and some very ghoulish monsters. Chihiro has to get help from the river spirit to save her parents and return to the human world.
3. This next movie is not your average documentary. It involves a film maker who eats nothing but McDonald's food for 30 days to prove how bad it can be for people who eat it constantly.

Answer: Super Size Me

"Super Size Me" was released in 2004 and stars independent film maker Morgan Spurlock. Throughout the movie, Morgan travels around the country, eating McDonald's food three times a day for a month. Can he stand the challenge? He also explores the impact fast food has on children, and how many of them aren't getting the right nutrition and exercise.

This movie is also somewhat humorous as well as informative. After the movie, Morgan wrote his own book about the experience called "Don't Eat This Book". "Fast Food Nation" is the title of a non-fiction book by Eric Schlosser about the impact of fast food on the world.
4. Every Christmas season, Willie takes a job as a department store Santa. Then on Christmas Eve, he and his vertically-challenged partner rob the store's safe and flee town. What is this hilarious, not-so-merry holiday flick?

Answer: Bad Santa

"Bad Santa" premiered in 2003 and stars Billy Bob Thorton as Willie. In the movie, Willie and his little partner take jobs as Santa and elf at a department store, determined to pull off their cunning scheme again. However when Willie's hotel room is raided by the police, he takes up residence with an eight-year old boy he meets at the mall. Willie constantly battles alcoholism and is very popular with the ladies.

This year his department store heist doesn't go exactly as he planned. Tony Cox plays Marcus, Willie's short elf partner.
5. This charming family movie is about a young girl who is misunderstood by her parents and schoolmates, with books as her only friends. With her gift of magic powers, and the help of her school teacher, she outwits her nasty principal and eventually, her parents.

Answer: Matilda

"Matilda" has been one of my favorite movies since I was in elementary school. It is based on a book by Roald Dahl, author of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "James and the Giant Peach". Mara Wilson plays Matilda and Danny Devito plays the her crooked father, Harry Wormwood.
6. This next comedy has some very unusual characters. For a long time, "Rainbow Randolph" has been every kid's favorite show. But when Randolph is fired, he is replaced by a goofy purple rhinoceros! Now Randolph is trying every way in the world to get revenge on him. Can you name this slapstick comedy starring Robin Williams?

Answer: Death to Smoochy

"Death to Smoochy" may be about feuding childrens' TV show hosts, but it is definitely not a chlidrens' movie! Robin Williams plays Randolph and Ed Norton plays Sheldon, who becomes Smoochy. "Smoochy's Magic Jungle" is clearly making fun of "Barney and Friends". Throughout the movie, Sheldon is humiliated on live TV by Randolph, forced to appear at a Nazi rally, and even targeted for murder.
7. My next favorite movie is another light-hearted comedy. Steven Phillips was a successful Hollywood screenwriter, but he hits a career slump. Then he receives help from a woman claiming to be one of the nine daughters of Zeus!

Answer: The Muse

"The Muse" stars Albert Brooks (who also wrote and directed) as Steven, and Sharon Stone plays Sarah Little, the so-called muse. Sarah helps Steven write an incredible screenplay and helps Steven's wife start her own business selling her homemade cookies.
8. Gail plans the perfect family vacation for her son and husband, by taking them white water rafting on the river where she was once a tour guide. When the family meets up with two strangers, their vacation becomes a nightmare. What is the name of this 1994 action thriller starring Meryl Streep?

Answer: The River Wild

"The River Wild" is one of the most exciting movies, set on the rapids of the northern wilderness. Meryl Streep plays Gail, and Kevin Bacon plays villainous Wade. Wade and his partner Terry trick the family by being nice to them at first, then Wade pulls a gun and demands Gail take them down to the end of the treacherous river. Wade and Terry are actually fugitives who have just robbed a cattle auction and killed a security guard.
9. You have to admit, the main character of this movie looks a lot like a cartoon character, with her flamingo-pink hair. In fact, quite a lot of this German movie is animated. The cartoonish heroine has to reach her boyfriend in 20 minutes with a large sum of money, or he will be killed by a drug dealer. Can you name this psychological, high-speed thriller?

Answer: Run Lola Run

"Run Lola Run" stars Franka Potente as Lola, in this independent action flick which leaves some questions unanswered. The entire plot of the movie is replayed three times, with different problems Lola faces and three different endings. The first time, Lola is killed.

The second time, her ill-fated boyfriend is the victim. In the third outcome, both Lola and Manni walk away alive. Which events really happened? The mystique and uniqueness of this movie are why I enjoy it so much.
10. Novalee Nation is seventeen years old, pregnant when her uncaring boyfriend leaves her at a Wal-Mart store in a small Oklahoma town. Having nowhere to go, she secretly starts living in the store and gives birth to Americus, the "Wal-Mart baby". Novalee and her little girl also meet sweet, Bible-thumping Sister Husband and Forney, a young man who works in the town's library. What is the name of this heartwarming movie?

Answer: Where the Heart Is

"Where the Heart Is" is based on a book by Billie Letts, author of "The Honk and Holler Opening Soon" and "Shoot the Moon". Novalee is played by Natalie Portman, and Ashley Judd plays Novalee's friend Lexie. It also stars Stockard Channing as the sweet, kindhearted Sister Husband. Novalee overcomes a childhood of heartbreak (her mother abandoned her when she was five) and finds a life of love and happiness with her daughter.
