Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Mary Poppins", released in 1964 by Disney and based on the P.L. Travers story, starred Dick van Dyke as the lovable Bert (though he couldn't quite master the Cockney accent). Who starred alongside him as Mary herself? She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this film.

Answer: Julie Andrews

At first, Andrews declined the role of Poppins due to pregnancy. However, Walt Disney was desperate to have her star in his musical hit, and delayed filming until Andrews had given birth. She has also famously starred in "The Sound of Music" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie", and received numerous industry awards.
2. Throughout the film, Bert (van Dyke) is seen to go through a number of career changes. Which of the following jobs do you not see him do during "Mary Poppins"?

Answer: Taxi cab driver

Though you could perhaps imagine him driving a hansom cab, Bert did not do this in the film. In the opening scenes he is seen entertaining Victorian ladies and gents in the park with his one-man-band; Mary and the children enter their magical world through a pavement drawing Bert has done; and of course, his chimney sweep stint led to the hit song "Chim Chim Cher-ee".
3. Mary Poppins is employed by George and Winnifred Banks as a nanny who is "practically perfect in every way" - or rather, she arrives after magically piecing together a torn-up advertisment written by the Banks children. What are the names of the children?

Answer: Jane and Michael

Throughout the film, Jane and Michael Banks (played by Karen Dotrice & Matthew Garber) are portrayed as undisciplined and rebellious children, who caused their nannies to leave their posts, and were brought home by a policeman after running away in the park. They desperately try to win their father's affections, but it is only with the help of Mary Poppins that they become well-behaved and improve their relationship with their father.

Incidentally, Jeremy and Jemima are the names of the children in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", and Kurt and Greta are two of the von Trapp siblings in "The Sound of Music". Alice and David are just two random names.
4. After winning the Best Original Music Score Oscar in 1964, there is no denying that the music of "Mary Poppins" captured the hearts of cinema goers everywhere. In one magical scene where Poppins helps the children to tidy up the nursery simply by snapping her fingers, causing toys to fly in to draws, the trio sing a cheery song with the following line - fill in the blank! "A spoonful of ___ helps the medicine go down!"

Answer: sugar

"Chim Chim Cher-ee" won the Oscar for Best Original Song, though "A Spoonful of Sugar" must be one of the most widely recognised of Richard and Robert Sherman's hits. A 2004 DVD release revealed that Andrews herself in fact whistled the bird song featured in this song.
5. Another musical one for you: a resounding scene during "Mary Poppins" features her singing the children a lullaby about an old woman who implores you to "feed the birds, tuppence a bag". The old woman can be seen sitting before a famous London landmark, surrounded by pigeons. Where does she sit? The location is mentioned in the lullaby lyrics too.

Answer: On the steps of St Paul's Cathedral

The lullaby scene starts with Mary showing the children a snow globe with a miniature St Paul's inside, and as she sings, the viewer sees the old bird woman trying to sell bags of breadcrumbs for tuppence to passers-by. The following day, Michael Banks tries to buy a bag with his tuppence when he sees the old woman, but his father disallows him, saying he must invest it in to the bank.
6. Whilst in the world of the pavement drawing, Mary and Bert stroll in to a bistro whilst the children enjoy a ride on a merry-go-round. Of course, being a partly animated film, anything can happen - what creatures are the waiters at the bistro?

Answer: Penguins

The penguin waiters can be seen lavishing attention on Mary as they join Bert for a rendition of "It's a Jolly Holiday with Mary". A number of other animals join in the song: a horse and a cow can be seen singing that "when the day is grey and ordinary, Mary makes the sun shine bright"!
7. There is one particular scene in which Mary Poppins, the children, Bert, and Uncle Albert are holding a tea party in the air as laughing so hard has caused them to float! But is it true or false that Uncle Albert says that in order to get back down to the ground, you must think of something sad?

Answer: True

The thought that the children will have to leave to go home is sad enough to make everybody float back down to the ground again - which is just as well, as Albert had apparently been stuck near the ceiling for a week!
8. After being entertained at the bistro, Mary and Bert join the children on their merry-go-round ride - though all is not as it seems! The horses break free of the carousel and the four riders go off in to the countryside! They soon get caught up in a foxhunt, where Bert saves one of the animals. What animal does he save?

Answer: fox

Bert leans down from his horse and saves an Irish-voiced fox from being caught by the hounds. Being set in 1910, foxhunting would have been a perfectly acceptable pastime for wealthy Victorians - a far cry from the England of today. Besides, where in London could one go hunting nowadays!?
9. In the beginning of the film, a narrator (who we discover to be Bert) guides us to the house of the Banks family, where trouble is heard to be brewing. What is the address of the Banks household, where Mary Poppins will come to be nanny?

Answer: 17 Cherry Tree Lane

The address is quite clearly heard to be Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, a fictional street somewhere in London. The address is repeated by Admiral Boom, a neighbour of the Banks', who forewarns Bert that there may be trouble in the Banks household.
10. I couldn't complete this quiz without including a question in honour of the quiz title. So, just what is "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"?

Answer: A word to say when you have nothing to say

It took the Sherman brothers (who wrote the musical score for the film) two weeks to come up with the word, and it does in fact have a proper English meaning when broken down in to its syllables: "atoning for educability through delicate beauty", roughly. Though Mary says it is a word to say when there is nothing else to say, which I think is much less complicated.
