Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the two actors from a previous incarnation of 'Superman' who made cameo appearances in 'Superman: The Movie'.

Answer: Kirk Alyn and Noel Neill

Kirk Alyn played Superman and Clark Kent in the 1940's 'Superman' serials. Noel Neill played Lois Lane in the 1940's serials, and in the final seasons of television's 'The Adventures of Superman' in the 1950's. Both actors appeared as Lois Lane's parents in scene in which young Clark Kent races the train in 'Superman: The Movie.'
2. What was the substance which Gus Gorman used in place of the 'unknown' element that makes up kryptonite in 'Superman III'?

Answer: Tar

In 'Superman III' Richard Pryor had computers analyze Kryptonite so that Websco could synthesize it. One of the elements in authentic kryptonite's make-up, however, was unknown to the computer. Gus glanced down and saw the ingredient 'tar' on his carton of cigarettes, so he told the computers to use tar in place of the unknown element.
3. Which of the following people associated with the 'Star Trek' franchise also has an association with one of the 'Superman' movies?

Answer: Alexander Courage

Alexander Courage composed music for 'Superman IV' based on John Williams' source music. Courage also wrote the theme to the original 'Star Trek' television series as well as some of the incidental music.
4. Where is Lex Luthor's lair located in 'Superman: The Movie'?

Answer: Beneath Grand Central Station

5. How many of the 'Superman' films feature Kryptonite?

Answer: 3

'Superman: The Movie', 'Superman Returns' and 'Superman III'.
6. Which character from the 'Superman' comics does not make an appearance in any of the films?

Answer: Pete Ross

Johnathan and Jor-El appear in 'Superman: the {Movie';} Lana appears in both the first and third films.
7. To whom is 'Superman: The Movie' dedicated in the credits?

Answer: Geoffery Unsworth

Geoffrey Unsworth was the Director of Photography for 'Superman: The Movie' and portions of 'Superman II.' He died shortly before the first film was released.
8. Which of the following was not used as a special effect to get Superman to fly in 'Superman: The Movie'?

Answer: A remote control model

Several models were used in 'Superman II,' but not in the first film.
9. Which real-life newspaper lent its building to become the offices of the 'Daily Planet'?

Answer: New York Daily News

10. By the time Clark Kent becomes Superman (costume and all), how old is he?

Answer: 30

This is inferred from Jor-El's speech to his son in the Fortress of Solitude. It begins, 'By now you will have reached your 18th year as it is measured on Earth...' Later, Jor-El tells his son, 'By the time we return to the confines of your galaxy, twelve of your years will have passed.' Eighteen plus twleve equals thirty.
11. Where does the name 'Clark' come from?

Answer: Martha Kent's maiden name

In 'Superman: The Movie,' Jonathan says to his wife: 'Martha Clark Kent, are you listening to what I'm saying?'
12. By the end of 'Superman IV: The Quest For Peace,' who is the publisher of the 'Daily Planet'?

Answer: Perry White

Some people get confused and believe that Perry White was always the publisher of the 'Daily Planet', but he was only the Managing Editor. In 'Superman IV,' however, the 'Daily Planet' was purchased by David Warfield and turned into a tabloid rag. This angered Perry White to the point that he went to the bank, borrowed enough money and became a majority shareholder for the 'Daily Planet,' which effectively made him its publisher as well.
13. Which of the following people has not directed a 'Superman' movie?

Answer: Ken Thorne

Richard Lester directed 'Superman II' and 'Superman III.' Richard Donner directed 'Superman: The Movie.' Sydney J. Furie directed 'Superman IV: The Quest For Peace.'
14. What is the name of the bully who picked on young Clark Kent?

Answer: Brad Wilson

15. In the extended cut of 'Superman II,' which of the following events did not take place?

Answer: Superman is sent to the Phantom Zone

In the special TV broadcast versions of 'Superman II,' we see several scenes not present in the thetrical cut of the film. The young boy who watches Non testing his heat vision (and whose father is levitated by Zod) rides off on a horse to get help. Non throws the police light (which he took earlier) with super-strength at the kid, killing him in a minor explosion.

After the police take away Lex Luthor (also as seen in the extended cut), Superman and Lois land at a safe distance from the Fortress, and Superman uses his heat vision to destroy it. (This bit of continuity is later disregarded in 'Superman IV' when we see Superman returning to the Fortress.) Also in the extended cut, we see Lois teaching Superman how to cook a souflee with his heat vision in the Fortress, which presumably leads to their dinner there.

At no point, however, was the Phantom Zone revisited in any of the other 'Superman' movies. (It was in 'Supergirl,' though!)
