quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scene, the following lyrics are sung: "I too have sailed the world and seen its wonders". What is the next line?

Answer: "for the cruelty of men is as wondrous as Peru."

In the beginning Anthony Hope sings "I have sailed the world, beheld its wonders." And later on in the song, Sweeney Todd makes a point to Anthony saying "I too have sailed the world and seen its wonders." In the beginning, Anthony is singing this song because he is arriving in London with Sweeney Todd and they are discussing, through song, how they feel about London. Later on, Sweeney is singing to Mrs. Lovett and he is telling her how the men of this world are horrible creatures.
2. Fill in the missing lyric from "The Worst Pies in London": "Is that just disgusting? You have to ______ it. It's nothing but crusting. Here drink this, you'll need it..."

Answer: concede

During this scene, Mrs. Lovett greets Mr. Todd and offers him some ale and one of her pies, or should I say one of the 'Worst Pies in London'? She knows, as well as anyone else who tastes her pies, that they are disgusting because the price of meat is too high.
3. The following two lines are sung at the same time. Which two people sang these lyrics: "Soon you'll know splendors you never have dreamed" and "Splendors you never have dreamed."

Answer: Mr. Todd and Mrs. Lovett

In this scene, Mrs. Lovett reunites Mr. Todd with his razors for shaving, as he used to be a barber prior to being sent away for a crime he did not commit. While he is singing to his razors, Mrs. Lovett is singing to him. He missed his razors, and she missed him. He is telling his razors that they'll know splendors because once again he'll be using them.
4. Who sings about their "cage" and how it is "damask and dark"?

Answer: Johanna

Johanna only sings one song in the entire movie, and that is "Green Finch and Linnet Bird". While in the actual stage play, Johanna does sing more than once, they cut out several songs and parts in the movie to save time and focus more on other characters. Johanna is singing about her 'cage' because she is locked in the house where she resides and is not allowed to do anything.
5. Throughout the movie the old beggar woman sings her song about how the city is on fire and there is an awful smell every night. There is one word she repeats, often in sets of three. Which word is this?

Answer: Mischief

The old beggar woman notices that something isn't right and she sings about it. At one point, when Toby is running to the pie shop, she grabs him by the arm to tell him to be careful because their is evil there. Instead he runs over and starts singing to those passing by, to come into the shop and try some of the famous pies.
6. Anthony sees Johanna and then begins to sing a song about her. What is the missing word from the following lyrics? "I am in the dark beside you, buried sweetly in your _______ hair."

Answer: yellow

The name of this song is "Johanna". One point Mr. Todd makes throughout the movie is how his wife had yellow hair and how he wants Johanna to have the same yellow hair. When Anthony sees Johanna, the one things that sticks out most clearly in his mind is her hair.
7. Mr. Todd and Mrs. Lovett go to see the great Signor Pirelli and they find themselves watching a little boy named Tobias, who is advertising Pirelli's Miracle Elixir. What is the next line in the song he is singing? "Gentlemen, you are about to see something wot rose from the dead,_____"

Answer: "on the top of my head!"

In this scene Tobias is trying to get people to buy Pirelli's Miracle Elixir, which is also the name of the song. However it doesn't take long before Mr. Todd shows it up as a scam, made from ink and pee. His Miracle Elixir is supposed to make hair grow on your head, much like today's Rogaine.
8. During the contest scene, while Signor Pirelli is shaving his volunteer, he is singing a song. Which line comes next in these lyrics? "but first-a you gather around, signorini, signori,_____"

Answer: "you looking a man"

This song is "The Contest", in which Mr. Todd and Signor Pirelli compete to see who can shave the smoothest and fastest shave. While Signor Pirelli is busy singing his heart out and showing off to the audience, Mr. Todd slowly applies the lather to the face of his volunteer and then on the last, long, note Signor Pirelli sings, Mr. T completely shaves his volunteer and wins the contest.
9. In the scene where Mr. T and Mrs. Lovett begin to sing about the new pies they can make, what type of person do they NOT talk about eating?

Answer: accountant

This song is known as "A Little Priest", where Mrs. Lovett comes up with the idea to cook the bodies and make them into pies. This is funny, in a sense, because it was her who, in the beginning, said that it was disgusting how Mrs. Mooney cooked cats in her pies. Throughout the song they sing about how certain people would taste.
10. Where does Mrs. Lovett tell Mr. T she wants to live near?

Answer: by the sea

In the brightest scene of the movie, Mrs. Lovett reveals to Mr. T how she wants to live by the sea and marry him in a song called "By the Sea". She talks about how she'd love to do this if the business they have keeps going well.
