Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Africa, Rick's Bar, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are all together in the early days of World War II. But in which city is this movie set?

Answer: Casablanca

The film is the 1942 romantic drama, 'Casablanca', directed by Michael Curtiz. It tells the story of a man (Bogart) who must choose between the woman he loves and helping her and her husband escape Morocco, so they can rejoin the Czech Resistance. The film won three Academy Awards including Best Picture.
2. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan perhaps suffer insomnia in the largest city in the state of Washington, in this 1993 romance-drama directed by Nora Ephron. Which city is this?

Answer: Seattle

The film is 'Sleepless in Seattle'. It is a story of an unlikely cross-nation romance between a widowed architect (Hanks) with a young son who live in Seattle and a reporter for the 'Baltimore Sun' (Ryan). Each is in a desultory relationship and wondering whether this is the best they can hope for. Through a variety of near misses and conniving by the son, the two lead characters finally meet, with the film ending with a promise of some future together for the pair.
3. Hunter S. Thompson's autobiographical, 1971 musing about a drug-fueled road trip across the western USA forms the basis for this 1998 movie. Terry Gilliam directed this search for the "American Dream" by Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro). But in which city do Duke and Gonzo experience their 'Fear and Loathing'?

Answer: Las Vegas

This film tells the story of Duke and Gonzo as they travel to Las Vegas, where Duke has to report on a motor cycle race for a magazine. Events rapidly spiral out of control as the drug-taking of the duo causes chaotic scenes. The film was a cinematic flop but has since become a cult classic.
4. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington star in this 1993 film, which openly deals with the effects of the AIDS epidemic. Hanks plays a senior lawyer who was fired, allegedly as he has AIDS. Washington is a personal injury lawyer employed to take on this case of wrongful dismissal. What is the name of this film, which is also the city in which it is set?

Answer: Philadelphia

The movie storyline is partially based on the true story of one of the first AIDS discrimination cases, where Geoffrey Bowers sued the law firm Baker & McKenzie for wrongful dismissal in 1987. Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Andrew Beckett in the film.
5. This powerful, 1961 film examines a microcosm of the Holocaust through trials of some judges in the Nazi regime at the end of World War II. The film's cast includes Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark, Burt Lancaster, Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich, as well as Maximilian Schell, who received an Oscar for Best Actor. So where does the 'Judgment' occur?

Answer: Nuremberg

In 'Judgment in Nuremberg', four German judges are accused of crimes against humanity for their role in the Holocaust. Werner Klemperer, who served in the US Army during World War II, has his first substantial cinematic role in this film. One of the major plot lines is based on the real Katzenburger Trial, where a Jewish businessman was sentenced to death for having an affair with an Aryan woman.
6. This 1985 comedy-drama, written and directed by Woody Allen, is set in New Jersey during the 1930s. To escape her dull life and an abusive husband, Cecilia (Mia Farrow) watches the same fictitious film many times. Reality blurs with fiction when the film world becomes real to Cecilia and she enters the make-believe world of the "Purple Rose". But from which African City does this 'Purple Rose' originate?

Answer: Cairo

There is comedy, drama and more than a touch of the surreal in this complex film. A character from the movies, Tom Baxter (played by Jeff Daniels) steps out into the real world from the film "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and presents other options to Cecilia, rather than having to return to her husband (played by Danny Aiello). Woody Allen has commented that this is his favorite film.

It was nominated for an Academy Award for a Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (for Allen), and it won many other awards including the BAFTA President's Award and Best Film for 1986.
7. This 1939 film made James Stewart a star. He plays Jefferson Smith, a naive but principled leader of the Boy Rangers. Through a coin toss and political manipulation, Mr Smith becomes a senator and is then caught up in intrigue and corruption. He brilliantly circumvents almost certain catastrophe at the end of the film when all seems hopeless. But where did Mr Smith go to perform these deeds?

Answer: Washington

Directed by Frank Capra, this story of the ultimate defeat of political graft and corruption was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, but only received one (Best Writing, Original Story). It had to compete that year with 'Gone With The Wind' and 'The Wizard of Oz'.

When first shown in Washington, it was attacked by the press for being anti-American and pro-communist, but it is now ranked as one of the best US films of all time.
8. Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz star in this gripping 2002 tale of ethnic tensions in mid-19th century USA. Rival gangs of long-established Protestants and recently arrived Irish Catholics battle from the start of the movie, in 1846, up until the early 1860s. Where is this film of sectarian gang warfare set?

Answer: New York

The 'Gangs of New York' was directed by Martin Scorsese and is based loosely on a non-fiction book of the same name, written in 1928 by Herbert Asbury. The futility of the tribal warfare is highlighted when the gang battle at the end is overwhelmed by Union soldiers firing shells to quell the New York draft riots.

The film fades to then show modern New York having grown (up) from this violent past. Day-Lewis won a number of best actor awards for his performance (but not the Academy Award).
9. This 1981 homage to the werewolf legend, directed by John Landis, stars David Naughton, Jenny Agutter and Griffin Dunne. Two Americans are on a backpacking trip in Europe when they are attacked by a werewolf on the moors. David survives the mauling and awakes three weeks later. He moves to the city to recover but starts having strange and horrific visions. On the full moon he roams the streets and kills six innocents. After a second killing spree he is cornered and then shot. Which city does this American Werewolf terrorize?

Answer: London

John Landis also wrote this comedy/horror film, but sat on his script for over a decade before making the film. The critics were rather kind to this film and it has since become a cult classic. It won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and also an Academy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup.
10. Based on a James Ellroy novel of the same name, Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, Guy Pearce and many others star in this 1997 film of a 1953 murder investigation in California which quickly spirals out of control. Political corruption, drugs, prostitution and racism are revealed as Officer Exley relentlessly pursues absolute justice. So in which city is Confidentiality required?

Answer: L.A.

"L.A. Confidential" was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won two (Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Kim Basinger, and Best Screenplay - Adapted for Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland). 'Time' magazine nominated it as the best film of 1997. Although shot in film noir style, the director, Curtis Hanson, did not want the film to be an exercise in nostalgia, and so used more natural lighting.
