Sonny's enthusiasm outstrips his abilities, and the pictures on his website do not reflect the finished, or rather the unfinished, product. The promised transport to the hotel fails to materialise and the rooms are rather more basic than the new residents are expecting.

Dev Patel was born in Harrow, England, and first came to attention in the television show 'Skins'. He went on to star in 'Slumdog Millionaire' in 2008 and also portrayed Prince Zuko in 'The Last Airbender' (2010). His portrayal of Sonny and his efforts to juggle his girlfriend, mother and responsibilities to his guests is endearing. By the way, the other three options are not actors, but English cricketers of Indian descent.

Answer: Maggie Smith

Muriel has reluctantly come to India for her hip replacement, having been told that she faces a long wait for her operation in the UK. We have already seen her refusing to be treated by a black doctor at home and her distaste for her new surroundings is obvious.

Dame Maggie Smith gives an excellent performance in the role, in much of which she is sitting in a wheelchair. Her career began on the stage in 1952, and she has worked constantly since, with theatre, television and films too numerous to list. Among the highlights are 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' (1969), her portrayal of Minerva McGonagall in the 'Harry Potter' films and 'Quartet' (2012). On television, she has delighted many with her withering comments as the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Answer: Call centre

The recently widowed Evelyn has had to sell her flat to clear the debts left by her late husband. Rather than submit to her son's assumption that she will live with him and his family, Evelyn heads for India. Since her income is limited, she needs to look for work, and applies to a call centre. The manager decides to use her to train his workers in the best way to talk to English people, particularly the elderly. Among the young Indians working there is Sunaina, played by Tena Desae, who is Sonny's girlfriend.

Dame Judi, as Evelyn, narrates the film by describing the events in the blog she is writing. She is another actress with a long lasting career, which began on the stage in 1957 and encompassed television and film along the way. She may well be best known to non Brits as M in the 'James Bond' films, a role she first played in 'GoldenEye' (1995).

Answer: Madge

Madge has been married more than once - just how many times is not explicitly explained - and has rebelled against being taken for granted as a childminder by her daughter and son-in-law. She has chosen India at random and it is clear that she is on the look out for her next husband. Having joined the local Viceroy Club in the hope of meeting new men, she is disappointed to find only another resident of the hotel - Norman Cousins (Ronald Pickup). Madge helps Norman, who is also looking for love, make the acquaintance of Carol, who has lived in the area all her life. Madge is not deterred, though, and by the end of the film has at least one wealthy Indian suitor in tow.

Celia Imrie has been seen regularly on British television, often with Victoria Wood and Julie Walters. Her other films include the Bridget Jones films of 2001 and 2004, 'Calendar Girls' (2003) and 'Highlander' (1986).

Answer: Penelope Wilton

Douglas has invested all the couple's money in their daughter's business, with the likelihood that it will all be lost. Staying in England means that they can afford only a 'beige bungalow', as Jean scathingly describes it, so coming to India has allowed them to stretch their funds further. While Douglas enjoys the colour and bustling life, Jean hates it and spends most of her time in her room. The cracks in their marriage widen even further when Douglas finds Evelyn to be far more congenial company.

Penelope Wilton played Isobel Crawley in 'Downton Abbey', where she has many scenes with Maggie Smith. In the film, the paths of the pair rarely cross. Apart from her stage and television work, Penelope has appeared in 'Calendar Girls' (2003), alongside Celia Imrie, in 'Match Point' (2005) and 'The History Boys' (2006).

Graham is a retired judge, who had spent many years in India in his childhood and youth. His purpose is to find his first love, and he meets the boys while looking for the friend's house, only to discover it has long gone. He joins the boys in their cricket game, advising them on technique, only to find himself bowled out by one of the youngest and smallest players. Graham eventually confides in Evelyn that he is gay, and that the lover he is searching for is male.

Tom Wilkinson's film credits include 'The Full Monty' (1997), 'In the Bedroom' (2001) and 'Selma' (2014). His real life wife, Diana Hardcastle, also appears in 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' as Carol, Norman's love interest.

Answer: Jaipur

The hotel was said to be located on the outskirts of Jaipur, and signs showing the name of the city could be seen during the film. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, in the north west of India. The building used as the hotel was not in Jaipur itself, but in a village named Khempur. It was originally a palace.

Delhi is where Sonny came from, while the other two cities have no connection to the film.

Answer: Graham

Graham has eventually located his former love, Manoj, and is happy to learn that he has not, as he feared, ruined his life. Manoj, played by Rajendra Gupta, is married, in an arranged marriage, but his wife is aware of his past and knows all about Graham. Unknown to the others, but not to himself, Graham has a heart condition and slips quietly away while resting in the hotel's gardens. Manoj arranges a Hindu funeral for him, attended by all the other residents.

Sonny's mother, played by Lillete Dubey, has been pressuring Sonny to go home with her for an arranged marriage, despite his love for Sunaina. To make matters worse, Sonny owns only one third of the hotel, with his brothers (more successful and more favoured by their mother) wanting to sell it. Sonny has given up hope, but Muriel has, without his knowledge, gone through the figures and visited his prospective investor.

The only proviso is that she must stay on and help to manage the hotel, a role which we see her happily fulfilling as the film ends.
