The Best Quotes of "Sherlock Holmes" - 2009 Quiz

This is my absolute favourite film. I watch it at least two or three times a month; sometimes several times a week. Do you know the 2009 film as well as I do? (Note: these quotes are not necessarily in the right order.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the quote. "Physical recovery, six weeks. Full psychological recovery, six months. Capacity to spit at back of head, ________."

Answer: Neutralised

Sherlock Holmes thinks this before beginning his attack on his opponent during the 'fight scene'. The full quotation is, "In summary: ears ringing, jaw fractured, three ribs cracked, four broken, diaphragm haemmorraging. Physical recovery, six weeks. Full psychological recovery, six months. Capacity to spit at back of head - neutralised."

This scene shows how skillful Holmes is, as he sucessfully planned his attacks and responses before they happened.
2. Who says "Death is only the beginning."?

Answer: Lord Blackwood

Lord Blackwood says these as his 'final words' before his execution by hanging at the start of the film. Of course - these are not his final words, as he apparently rises again...
3. Inspector Lestrade insists that "When the dead walk... the living will fill these coffins."

Answer: False

This is actually spoken by the groundskeeper of the graveyard where Blackwood is 'buried'. Said to be "cata... cata... not feeling very well" by Lestrade (who couldn't pronounce 'catatonic'), the groundskeeper declares this ominous statement to Holmes and Watson, after stating Lord Blackwood had escaped his grave.
4. Which character says the line, "No girl wants to marry a doctor who can't tell if a man's dead or not."?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

This is one of my favourite lines of the film. Holmes says this to Watson when Blackwood is suspected to have risen from the grave, despite Watson pronouncing him dead. Even though Blackwood "had no pulse", the reason for this is not found out until the last moments of the film.

Holmes says this to Watson to re-engage him in the case.
5. When Watson and Holmes fight the arsonists in Reordan's apartment, Holmes discovers a taser. When Watson asks what the object is, what language does Holmes reply in?

Answer: French

He says "je ne sais pas" which translates to "I do not know". This is in fact one of the only bits of French I know, purely by watching this film too many times!

He speaks French because Dredger, the huge man working for Blackwood, does. This is around the middle of the film, when Watson and Holmes are exploring Reordan's work, although they do meet Dredger again.
6. Who is Holmes speaking to when he says, "In over your head yet, darling?"

Answer: Irene Adler

Irene said that she had never been in over her head before, when Holmes visited the Grand Hotel. She should have taken Holmes' advice, however, and acted more carefully, as she ended up being caught by Blackwood and being attached to a band saw, when this quote was said. Luckily, Holmes and Watson were able to rescue her!
7. Which of these does Watson not say that Adler wanted?

Answer: A new husband

"What could she possibly need? ...an alibi, a beard...a human canoe...she can sit on your back and paddle you up the Thames."

Watson is referring to the fact that Holmes is likely to do anything for Irene Adler, a woman he apparently has a lot of history with, despite her being a "world-class criminal". This is said near the beginning of the film, a couple of scenes after Adler is seen for the first time.
8. When reading Watson's palm, what does Flora, the "gypsy woman" see? Complete the quote. "Patterned table-cloths...china figurines...and - ugh! - _______!"

Answer: Lace doilies

Holmes secretly asked Flora to make predictions about Watson's marriage to Mary Morstan. Even when Watson realises Holmes had a hand in the predictions, Flora still rambles on, "Oh, she turns to fat and has a beard."

This is a very funny scene, about half way through the movie, with Holmes showing intense bitterness about his partner's proposal, due to Watson leaving 221B Baker Street to live with Mary.
9. Finish the quote. Watson: "What have you done to Gladstone now?" Holmes: "I was simply testing a new anaesthetic. _______________"?

Answer: He doesn't mind.

Poor Gladstone! The bulldog, belonging to both Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, has to put up with being tested upon by Holmes many times.

This quote is from around the start of the film, where Holmes is bored, due to not having a case. The landlady says "He's killed the dog. Again." Gladstone also shows the effects of mad honey disease, the reason behind Blackwood's lack of pulse.
10. What is the last line of the film?

Answer: "Clarky? Case reopened."

All were quotes from the film, but from different points, spoken by Watson, Holmes and the gypsy, Flora.

Sherlock Holmes speaks the last line, telling the policeman, Clarky, that the case is being reopened to find Professor Moriarty. This prepares the audience for the next film. Roll on "Sherlock Holmes 2"!
