Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What popular rock-and-roll hit was used as the theme music?

Answer: Rock Around the Clock

Bill Haley and the Comets had their biggest hit with this song which was used on the soundtrack. It is rumored that the star of the movie, Glenn Ford, suggested it to the producers after hearing his son, Peter, playing it. It was written by Max Freedman and James Myers in 1952 and was also used as theme music during the first two seasons of the American TV sitcom "Happy Days".
2. Who directed this movie?

Answer: Richard Brooks

Brooks (not to be confused with the "Law & Order" actor) was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for this movie. He also directed the movies "In Cold Blood", "Elmer Gantry" and "Looking For Mr. Goodbar", amongst many others. He passed away in 1992 at age 79.
3. Glenn Ford played the idealistic and dedicated teacher, Richard Dadier (Daddy-O to his disrespectful students). What subject did he teach?

Answer: English

Dadier was given the difficult task of trying to reach the minds and hold the interest of tough, inner-city high school students. Physical, verbal and implied threats come to him, but he didn't cave.
4. Artie West, a particularly troubled student, sought to harass Dadier by which of these means?

Answer: writing anonymous notes and making crank calls to Dadier's wife

Mrs. Dadier (Anne Francis) received anonymous letters and phone calls, which was later revealed to have been made by West (Vic Morrow), implying that her husband was having an affair with another teacher. Although the teacher in question did make advances to Dadier, he refused them. The stress of getting this harassment made Mrs. Dadier's pregnancy more difficult.
5. What did math teacher Joshua Edwards bring to school to share with his students?

Answer: jazz music records

Mr. Edwards (Richard Kiley) brought the records for his "advanced" math class to help demonstrate that music is based on mathematics. When Edwards refused to play the music for Artie West and his class, they busted up the fragile records and phonograph. Remember, this was long before CDs.
6. What well-known actor had a minor role as the slow-witted student, Santini?

Answer: Jamie Farr

Billed as Jameel Farah (his actual name), Jamie played the intellectually challenged student who would just sit and smile in class. He also worked in several other motion pictures and had guest appearances on numerous TV shows. His best-known role is arguably that of Corporal Max Klinger on the long-running TV series "M*A*S*H".
7. What after-school job did student Greg Miller have?

Answer: garage mechanic

Played by Sidney Poitier, Greg had the additional distinction of being African-American which, in the 1950s, was an extra handicap. However, unlike Artie West, he was ambitious and conscientious enabling him to hold down an after-school job at a local auto repair shop.

He was also a talented singer and Dadier asked him to help by performing with his vocal group the school's Christmas show.
8. What unique method did Dadier use to get his students involved in class discussion?

Answer: showed an animated cartoon

The cartoon was "Jack and the Beanstalk" and raised some issues about right and wrong. Some of the teachers noticed an improvement in the students' behavior after attending Dadier's class.
9. What was the name of the female teacher who was assaulted by a student?

Answer: Lois Hammond

Miss Hammond (Margaret Hayes) was a good-looking young teacher. Dadier happened to stumble on the assault and interrupted it. He man-handled the student and turned him over to the school administration after which, Miss Hammond started making advances to Dadier.

He and Josh Edwards were subsequently roughed up in an alley as revenge. Between this and having his records destroyed, Edwards eventually quit.
10. "You ever try to fight thirty-five guys at one time, Teach?" was said by which student?

Answer: Artie West

The ever-confrontational Artie West was always challenging Dadier's authority. He attempted to intimidate the teacher by implying that if Dadier tried to discipline him, the teacher would have to take on the whole class since Artie thought his gang would stand behind him in anything.
