Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the particle accelerator used by the space crew?

Answer: Shepard

It's the future. Energy sources will be exhausted in five years. A risky, experimental energy source is sent into space to commence testing though none are too sure how the particle accelerator involved will work. That said, there's little other recourse; it would solve the planet's energy crisis. A team is sent into orbit; the future relies on the success of the project. The Shepard device, as it is known, is sent with it despite its instability.
The team spends nearly two years in space working on the project.
2. How many attempts does it take before the particle accelerator operates successfully?

Answer: Forty-seven

Ava struggles with her posting on Cloverfield since she's separated from her husband, Michael. She worries that, after all of the failed attempts at firing the Shepard, there's only enough fuel to perform the test three more times before they run out completely, and if that happens, there's not really another option. So morale is down. The rest of the team is jaded by the progress of the mission while Ava struggles with the loss of her children years ago. Over breakfast, some of the crew starts to get testy, believing that others are intentionally sabotaging the project for political reasons.
The forty-seventh test occurs that morning despite fears of something called 'The Cloverfield Paradox'. Utilizing the Shepard, some on Earth theorize, could mash dimensions together and allow chaotic creatures to bleed through into reality.
Of course, on the forty-seventh attempt, it works properly. At least...properly to a point.
3. What happens when the particle accelerator succeeds?

Answer: Earth seemingly vanishes.

The particle accelerator does indeed achieve a stable power output, but only for a short time; it overloads after a few moments before surging and damaging the Helios team's spacecraft. There's no time to waste though. The team has to get the fires on the ship under control and ensure their safety onboard. During a later assessment of the ship and its life support systems, Ava tries to reconstruct a communications link only to find that there's nothing there. Earth is gone. No signal, no visual, nothing.
4. After the experiment goes awry, which critical piece of equipment goes missing?

Answer: Gyroscope

Although the ship is maintained quickly after the crash, it becomes apparent that getting out of the sticky situation created by the power surge and whatever else happened may be more difficult than anticipated. Later, when Ava checks the gyroscope, she finds that it's completely missing, implying that there's no navigation without it.
Other weird occurrences crop up. Horrible sounds are heard in the vents of the ship. Volkov feels an odd sensation despite looking perfectly fine. A panel behind one of the ship's corridors seems to have something behind it.
On Earth, objects collide with the planet's surface. Ava's husband, Michael, wakes up and tries to figure out what's happening.
5. Where does the ship's worm colony end up after the particle accelerator is fired?

Answer: Inside a crew member

Upon opening the panel in the ship corridor, the crew finds a woman trapped in the wires and piping. In some cases she's fused into the wires altogether. They extract her from the wall and sedate her before speeding up her cellular growth.
It doesn't go so well for Volkov, a Russian technician onboard, because his body continues to experience some weird quirks. He overrides a security protocol and uses the ship's 3D printer to start crafting a gun, intending to use it to kill German engineer Schmidt. It doesn't happen as he planned though. Volkov begins to seize and, when he's brought to the medical bay, he tears open; the ship's worm colony bursts out of him.
That's when the mystery woman from the wall, Jensen, awakens and reveals herself to be part of the crew.
6. Jensen claims to fill whose role in the Helios crew?

Answer: Tam

According the Jensen, she is the ship's Shepard engineer, a role already filled by Tam. She also states that Ava was never onboard the ship with the Helios crew as she was trained as a civilian coordinator and works on Earth. Clearly, the story doesn't line up. Jensen whispers and warns Ava not to trust Schmidt, claiming he sabotaged the Shepard. Commander Kiel reviews the confidential logs onboard the ship and, sure enough, discovers that Schmidt had been led by German intelligence to sabotage the plans until Russia was neutralized. Schmidt denies every word. On Earth, Michael realizes that all communications with the Helios crew have been lost.

There is still no certainty as to what happened to the ship. As he heads to the hospital to work in triage, he stops his car to see that the building has been destroyed. Something looms in the shadows overhead as a voice cries from within the building.
7. Who has their arm severed from their body?

Answer: Mundy

Things get weird on the ship when Irish repairman Mundy's arm gets pulled into the wall of the ship and severed without pain. Schmidt, who was locked into a cell by Commander Kiel, finds that his door is somehow unlocked. When he looks down one of the hallways, he finds Mundy's severed arm crawling along the floor.

It starts to make sense in a nonsensical way, at least to Schmidt. None of them listened, but this is the Cloverfield Paradox at work-- particles interact with each other across two separate dimensions in the multiverse. It makes sense because Jensen shouldn't be on the ship, Schmidt shouldn't be working for German spies, and Mundy's arm shouldn't be off on its own, clamouring for a pen. They give it a pen anyways though and it tells them to cut Volkov open. When they do, they find the gyroscope, of all things.
8. The crew theorizes that they can return to their own dimension by firing the particle accelerator a second time.

Answer: True

The gyroscope certainly helps. Once it ends up back in its proper spot, the crew finds out that Earth is still out there...it's just on the other side of the sun. Ava realigns the communications array to find that she can't transmit anything. That said, they receive a number of reports not only about wars and destruction on Earth, but of the destruction of Cloverfield Station. It could only mean that they've traveled to another dimension. Schmidt theorizes that if they fire the Shepard again, it could set everything right. While preparing the Shepard for another launch, however, Tam is frozen in a ventilation malfunction.

Michael finds a young girl in the wreckage of the destroyed hospital and takes her with him since she has nobody. He brings her to a friend's bomb shelter to ensure their safety.
9. When Commander Kiel is killed, the chain of command puts who in charge?

Answer: Ava

Jensen realizes that this crew is in her dimension, and their attempts to escape it will strand her in theirs. With Tam dead, Ava goes to her for help but realizes that in this new dimension, her kids may very well still be alive. The team realizes that they need to utilize most of the ship's remaining power to get back, so precision is necessary to prevent them all from dying once they return to the proper dimension.

Their attempts, however, are marred when a significant magnetic issue kills him and blows up a large chunk of the ship during another run with the Shepard. Commander Kiel, Monk, and Ava end up going out into space to split the broken part of the maintenance ring from the rest of the ship, but Kiel is flung out to space after the decoupling, leaving only four on the crew.
10. How many members of the Helios crew are able to make it back to Earth?

Answer: Two

When Ava and Monk return to the main ship, Jensen retrieves Volkov's gun and kills Monk in an attempt to keep the Shepard device in her own dimension. Ava is able to get the upper hand in the fight against the technician and launch her out into space, but it leaves her without a critical technician. Leaving a recording and a warning for her alternate self behind, she and Schmidt trigger Shepard one more time and transport themselves back into their regular dimension, reemerging in front of Earth and immediately reestablishing contact with Earth. Ava asks for an emergency team to help repair the station, but there's no need; they have a stable beam. They can return to Earth.
Michael is able to receive word of transmission from the Cloverfield, but he asks if Ava knows about the situation on the planet. She doesn't.
As Ava and Schmidt return to Earth's atmosphere, they drop down into the water off the coast of Delaware. As they do, a creature emerges from the clouds and lets out a bellowing roar.
