Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first word that John Merrick said to Dr. Frederick Treves?

Answer: Yes

Treves believed that Merrick had developmental problems intellectually, and that he couldn't speak. As their friendship grew, Treves got Merrick to speak more openly about his condition.
2. What was the one question that John Merrick had been waiting to ask Dr. Frederick Treves?

Answer: Can you cure me?

Unfortunately for Merrick, the answer to this question was no. Treves cared for Merrick at the hospital because he was fascinated by Merrick, and believed that information about human anatomy could be learned from him.
3. What family member's picture did John Merrick keep with him at all times?

Answer: His mother

The movie opened with Merrick's mother screaming and an elephant that was trumpeting and stomping on the ground. Merrick showed the picture of his mother to people that he became close to.
4. When Dr. Frederick Treves showed John Merrick to the head of the hospital Carr Gomm, he had Merrick memorize several phrases. What Biblical passage was recited by Merrick during this interview?

Answer: Psalm 23

Merrick impressed both Treves and Gomm because he recited the 23rd Psalm from memory, not because Treves taught him. Merrick informed Treves after the interview that he had read the Bible when he was younger.
5. What influential leader sent a letter to the London Hospital that thanked them for having cared for John Merrick?

Answer: Queen Victoria

A hospital committee was deciding on whether Merrick should remain a patient when they received the letter. Princess Alexandra personally delivered the letter, thanked the committee and visited Merrick.
6. The most well-known line from "The Elephant Man" was likely when Merrick said "I'm not an animal". What did Merrick say after making this remark?

Answer: I am a human being.

Merrick said "I'm not an animal" twice before he stated this line. Merrick spoke these words after he got annoyed with people who followed him from the train station all the way to the bathroom.
7. During the movie there was a scene in which a group of people had a "party" with John Merrick. Which of the following did they NOT do to Merrick?

Answer: They fed him strawberries and cream.

This scene displayed the lack of respect that some people had for Merrick. They also trashed his room and prompted Merrick to sneak away from the hospital.
8. One friend that John Merrick made was an actress named Mrs. Kendal. What work of literature did Mrs. Kendal give to Merrick?

Answer: Romeo and Juliet

Mrs. Kendal and Merrick read selections from "Romeo and Juliet" at different times in the film. Mrs. Kendal also gave Merrick an autographed picture of herself.
9. Which of the following did John Merrick's original "owner", Bytes, NOT do during the course of the movie "The Elephant Man"?

Answer: He made him act like a giraffe during performances.

Although Merrick was called a monster during the film, the movie's true monster was Bytes. Bytes was played by the actor Freddie Jones.
10. What was the final thing that John Merrick did in the film "The Elephant Man"?

Answer: He lay down on his back to sleep.

It was believed that the size of Merrick's head caused his neck to dislocate when he attempted to sleep on his back. Merrick had previously slept in an upright, sitting position which looked very uncomfortable.
