Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The detectives of the San Francisco Police Department do not have any special title, other than Detective.

Answer: False

They hold the title of Inspector. The SFPD is broken down into four bureaus. Administration is one, and it consists of the Commissioner and his staff, who run the Department from behind the scenes. Airport is another division which handles law enforcement at SF International Airport (which oddly enough is in San Bruno, a good deal south of the city). Field Operations is the third bureau.

It is in charge of the basic patrol officers (or beat officers). Finally there is Investigations. This is the bureau that manages the Inspectors (detectives).

Investigations has five divisions, Forensic Services, Property Crimes, Juvenile and Family Services, Narcotics and Vice and Personal Crimes. "Dirty" Harry Callahan is usually working Personal Crimes, specifically murder.
2. Who gets miffed when Harry says that personnel "...is for idiots!"?

Answer: Capt. McKay

"I was in personnel for 10 years!" Capt. McKay is a bit of a stuffed shirt. He comes across as more of a bureaucrat than a cop. It is his way or the highway. When Inspector Callahan complains about continuously being assigned to stake out duty, McKay says "I can't have the city crying police brutality every time you take the street." This is after Harry plowed a police car into a store front to stop a botched liquor store robbery, turned hostage situation. Lt. Bressler, played by Harry Guardino, is Harry's immediate superior and is trying to be on Harry's side while also watching his own behind.

He played the same part in the 1st "Dirty Harry" but inexplicably was left out of the 2nd one. Mrs. Grey is on the civilian panel to determine who will rise from the ranks to become one of several new Inspectors.

She is very prim and proper and doesn't really like Harry's gruffness. Officer Kate Moore, played by Tyne Daly, is a female street officer who is the target of Harry's outrage. "What gives you the right to become an Inspector when there are guys on the streets with 10 years experience...".

He asks her a hypothetical question that has Mrs. Grey reeling and that I can't recreate here. As far as the other Inspector is concerned, she answers the question (more or less) right.
3. There are a lot of jokes about Harry losing partners. In fact, the other officers often take up a pool to see how long the new one will last. However, he does lose his ex partner from "Dirty Harry" and "Magnum Force". What is the name of this venerable policeman?

Answer: Inspector Frank DiGiorgio

Yes, sadly Bobby Maxwell knifes him when the People's Revolutionary Strike Force is stealing the weapons from an armory. Harry doesn't seem to like Frank much. Over the course of the 3 movies he calls him Fatso and other names. Of course, if you saw the first movie, you know he doesn't play any favorites; he hates everybody.

Inspector Moore is Harry's newest partner, much to his dismay. He really gets to like her over time, especially when she reminisces about fishing as a little girl - "I even baited my own hooks." Naturally she gets it in the end. Early Smith was his partner from "Magnum Force".

He was blown up when he opened his mailbox. Chico Gonzalez was his partner in "Dirty Harry". There was a brief mention of him in "Magnum Force". "He got shot.

He's ok though. Teaching college now." He is the only partner in the first 3 movies who lived to tell about it.
4. What is the name of the group who is terrorizing San Francisco?

Answer: People's Revolutionary Strike Force

These are not nice people, especially Bobby Maxwell, played by DeVeren Bookwalter. This a terrorist group looking for money. They are willing to steal, maim and murder to achieve their goal. The others, as far as I know, I made up. Fessenheim is in reference to something Maxwell says to the police on a tape recording that is sent to police.

This clue helps point the investigation in the right direction.
5. One of the many weapons stolen from the armory is something called a LAW rocket. What happens to Harry's new partner when they go out to the range to see a demonstration?

Answer: Inspector Moore nearly gets incinerated by the back blast.

LAW stands for "Light Anti-Tank Weapon". It is described as a "one shot disposable bazooka" by the Range Master. As Inspector Moore is trying to get a better view (since everyone else there is a man and basically ignores her) Harry pulls her out of the way of the back blast just in time. It does start a small fire on the hillside.
6. Inspector Moore's naiveté about her new job continues to annoy Inspector Callahan. Where does he take her to intentionally upset her?

Answer: The morgue during an autopsy.

This movie was released in 1976, and although we routinely saw people get realistically gunned down, stabbed and etc., apparently cutting open someone's skull was a bit over the top. They show it being done by casting the shadow of the Medical Examiner sawing off and eventually removing the top of the skull. Kate is a little taken aback at first but initially holds her ground, even though the M.E. is humming as he works.

She finally loses it when the ME makes jokes about what he sees and then laughs the mad scientist laugh.

The Mob murder scene was in "Magnum Force". They do go to Black Panther-like Uhura headquarters (in a barber shop), that Harry calls the Fillmore chapter of VFW - Very Few Whites. Here Harry leaves Kate in the front to fend for herself.

She proceeds to go through the Penal Code sections one by one, as to how they pertain to folding, spindling or otherwise mutilating police officers.
7. As they follow up on leads, Inspectors Callahan and Moore go to the black militant headquarters of Uhura. The leader is "Big" Bill Mustapha.

Answer: False

His name is "Big" Ed Mustapha. Uhura is the name given on imdb.com and there is something hanging behind Big Ed's desk that has a sign that says Uhura as well, so we will go with that. Big Ed is played by Albert Popwell who played four different characters in the first four "Dirty Harry" movies.

He was a bank robber in "Dirty Harry", a pimp in "Magnum Force" and his (yet again) doomed partner in "Sudden Impact". He was also in another Clint Eastwood movie, 1968's "Coogan's Bluff", in the part of Wonderful Digby.
8. The Police brass think that it's Uhura who is behind the terroist threats and they raid the place. Harry knows this isn't right and after a brief argument about it, Capt. McKay asks for Harry's badge. Harry eloquently says what to McKay, about the disposition of the badge?

Answer: "Here's a seven point suppository, Captain."

Obviously I can't tell you exactly what he clarifies a moment later, but the SFPD Inspector's badge is a star with seven points on it (ouch!). This occurs just as Harry and Kate are about to be awarded a commendation each, for their hand in breaking up the terrorists.

When Harry tells McKay that he is crazy, that Uhura had nothing to do with the case, McKay responds by saying "That's it Callahan you are on 30 day suspension." Harry responds with "Make it 60!" Captain McKay eventually gives him a 120 day suspension and says, "Give me your star!." As Harry storms out of City Hall, a disbelieving Kate tries to keep up, not really sure if her loyalty is with McKay or Harry.
9. Why does Harry carry a .44 Magnum?

Answer: Because he hits what he aims at.

Newly promoted Inspector Moore asks him point blank (pardon the pun) "Why do you carry that cannon around for?" He also mentions that the .357 Magnum is a good weapon but he has seen .38s bounce of windshields. I think he is saying that the .357 is bigger, heavier weapon than a .38 special, but that the department doesn't allow the more powerful .357 cartridge to be used.

They have to use .38 special ammo which, oddly, is the same diameter but is a shorter and thus has a less powerful load. In "Dirty Harry" and at the beginning of "Magnum Force" he talks about this being "...the .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, it could blow your head clean off..." but he doesn't use this as a reason for using one on the job.
10. How does the Uhura leader get out of jail?

Answer: Harry and Kate post his bail.

This is a funny scene as Harry laments that he now has lost his credibility with Big Ed and Uhura. Kate suggests "We're law abiding citizens, why don't we put up his bail?" So they do and Big Ed is more or less cooperative but not until Harry says he'll tell everyone that Ed is an ear (snitch). Ed says, "Hey, don't even joke about that." Harry responds, "Who's joking?"
11. Captain McKay finds Callahan in a pool hall, to tell him Harry was right and he was wrong. What does Harry say to him that indicates that Harry really dislikes him?

Answer: "Your mouthwash ain't making it!"

This is also very funny. Capt. McKay has to take the cue ball away before going off on his long speech about who is wrong etc. and Harry interrupts him with, "Can I say something Captain?" Captain McKay asks, "What's that Callahan?" Harry responds, "Your mouthwash ain't cutting it." He then takes the cue ball back and resumes his game. Harry holds just about everyone in authority in utter contempt.

The "whistle 'Dixie'" answer is inspired by a scene in another Clint Eastwood movie, "The Outlaw Josie Wales".
12. Who do the terrorists kidnap and hold for ransom?

Answer: The Mayor

They shoot up a semi and the Mayor's limousine, not to mention the Mayor's staff. They also hold a drawbridge operator at gun point, so he will open the bridge, so that the Mayor can't escape. As I said earlier, these are not nice people. A busload of school children was kidnapped in "Dirty Harry".
13. Where do they take the Mayor?

Answer: Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz is a natural island that was first used as a military stockade beginning in 1850. It became a federal penitentiary in 1933 and was closed in 1963 due to operational costs. It is now run by the National Park Service and offers tours. The other islands are real and are all in San Francisco Bay. Treasure Island was used by the Navy from just before World War II until 1997.

The Bay Bridge is actually two bridges. Treasure Island is where the two pieces meet in the middle of the bay. Angel Island is north of Alcatraz just south of the Marin County city of Tiburon. Brooks Island is just off the coast of Richmond and Berkeley on the northeast side of the bay.
14. ________ tells Kate and Harry where the bad guys could be found?

Answer: Father John

Father John, played by M.G. Kelly, runs a little church and is a friend of the terrorists. He knows what they are up to but naturally doesn't approve of the methodology. He finally realizes things have gone too far when one of the terrorists, Wanda, tries to kill Harry in the church while disguised as a nun. Kate guns her down in the sanctuary, much to Harry's shock (he didn't realize the danger). I don't find Father John's attitude to be too Father-like.
15. Both Kate and Bobby Maxwell die in the end.

Answer: True

Kate and Harry get to Alcatraz on a fire boat with Harry dousing the sentry with the water cannon. Somehow, I don't think the guy dies by falling into the water. They then storm the place with Harry and Kate more or less alternating in taking out the bad guys. Kate frees the Mayor but then, while trying to get him out of the jail, sees Harry about to get gunned down.

In true movie fashion, she yells, "Harry, look out!". Harry ducks and she gets gunned down by Bobby Maxwell. Bobby tries to run off with the Mayor in another direction.

The Mayor, to his credit, initially resists but finally goes unwillingly at gun point. In the ensuing scuffle, he drops a LAW. Harry meanwhile no longer really cares about the Mayor or Bobby Maxwell and tries to scoop up the now supine (and bleeding) Kate and take her to safety. But, knowing her wounds are mortal, she tells him to forget it and her last words are "...get 'em Harry." I think we finally see the softer side of Harry and we also see how much he really cares for Inspector Kate Moore. Harry finds the LAW and goes after Maxwell who has inexplicably climbed to the top of a watchtower.

The Mayor, who is out of breath, is about a half flight below the top. Maxwell takes a few shots at Harry with his M-16 before it either jams or, more likely, runs out of ammo. As Bobby stands at the top yelling for his dead or missing friends and shaking his gun (like that's gonna help) Harry pops up from behind a wall with the LAW and aims it at Maxwell. Maxwell has been pretty ice cold until now, suddenly sees the LAW coming and screams in fright. A second later the LAW blows up the top of the watchtower and, of course, Bobby Maxwell with it. The Mayor meanwhile seems to be unscathed. After he goes down the stairs, he then runs up to Harry and thanks him for saving his life. Harry just looks at him, hands him the empty LAW tube and then goes back (I'm guessing) to see to Kate. I also have to believe that the outcome would have been the same had the Mayor made it to the top of the tower - that is, the Mayor would have gone up in smoke with Bobby Maxwell - that's how mad he was at him.
