Russell, who had been a minor league ballplayer till a shoulder injury ended his career at age 22, had read the script and talked to Shelton about playing the role. He went to Europe for 3 weeks and when he came back Kevin Costner had already been cast.
2. Who plays himself in the film?

Answer: Max Patkin

Max Patkin, the 'Clown Prince of Baseball', performs on the field and then that night in the bar tells Annie that Crash has 'played in more ballparks than I have.'
3. In Annie's voice over at the start of the film, she says she decided to 'give Jesus a chance' when she found out that there were the same number of stitches in a baseball as beads in a Catholic rosary. How many does she say are in each?

Answer: 108

4. What does Max say to Annie in describing Crash to her?

Answer: 'He's a little different. I actually saw him read a book without pictures once.'

5. What are Annie's 'ground rules', as explained to Crash and Nuke?

Answer: She only hooks up with one guy each season.

Annie's explanation to Crash and Nuke: 'These are the ground rules. I hook up with one guy a season. Usually takes me a couple weeks to pick the guy -- kinda my own spring training. And, well, you two are the most promising prospects of the season so far, so I just thought we should kinda get to know each other.'
6. What minor league record does Crash break during the film?

Answer: most home runs

Crash breaks the record with another team which he hooked on with after getting released by the Durham Bulls.
7. In response to Annie's query 'What do you believe in', Crash mentions 'long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses' that last how long?

Answer: 3 days

Crash tells Annie he believes 'in the soul,...the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve...'
8. How long was Crash in the Major Leagues?

Answer: 21 days

He calls them 'the 21 greatest days of my life. You get white balls for batting practice. And the ballparks are like cathedrals. The hotels all have room service. And the women all have long legs and brains.'
9. How does Annie tell Nuke to breathe when he is pitching?

Answer: through his eyelids

Like the lizards of the Galapogos Islands.
10. Annie's voice over at the end of the film says 'Walt Whitman once said, 'I see great things in baseball. It's our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us.' You can look it up.' Which manager used to say 'You can look it up'?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The full quote from Whitman is: 'I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us.'
