Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main character of Idi Amin is played by what multi award winning and internationally renown actor?

Answer: Forest Whitaker

Forest Whitaker has an impressive film resume including "Platoon", "The Color of Money", "Good Morning Vietnam" and "The Crying Game". His role here as Idi Amin won him his first Oscar for Best Actor as well as awards from the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild and a BAFTA. Idi Amin came to power in the 1970s, replacing former President Milton Obote in a military coup.

This came after Obote demoted Amin from commander of all the armed forces and took over full authority of the military for himself. Fearing imprisonment on charges of misappropriation of funds, Amin acted in a preemptive manner and arrested Obote on charges of corruption.
2. The first encounter between Dr. Nicholas Garrigan and Idi Amin comes after government troops make Nicholas come to tend to a injury suffered by Amin. What animal caused the accident?

Answer: cow

Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) diagnoses that he is only suffering from a sprained hand. He attracts Amin's interest though, after he cannot take the injured cries of the cow and grabs a gun and shoots the beast, putting it out of its misery. This leads to an angry rebuke from Amin and a number of guns being trained on him. Ultimately the thing that saves him is when he reveals he is Scottish and not British.

It is revealed that Amin served with a Scottish regiment and is quite fond of Scots. This leads to Nicholas being offered the position of personal physician to Amin. The part of Nicholas was loosely based on Bob Astlesa a British soldier who had a connection with Amin.
3. The second time Nicholas Garrigan tends to Idi Amin, Amin fears he is near death at the hands of the opposition. After a quick examination Nicholas makes a diagnosis and delivers a treatment. What combination does he attribute this less that life threatening attack to?

Answer: beer and asprin

His examination seems to indicate no poisoning or physical maladies. He then notices a bottle of pills and empty beer bottles. He takes a baseball bat and presses it against Amin to force out a build up of gas and flatulence. This seals the deal in Amin's mind, that this man is the man who must be his personal doctor. Amin tells him that the job will not be too demanding though as he knows when he will die and it is not soon.
4. After Nicholas Garrigan attends to Idi Amin's son and tries to help with his epilepsy, Amin wishes to reward him. What present does he bestow upon Garrigan?

Answer: car

He gives him a brand new Mercedes. The gift actually ends up saving Amin's life. Nicholas tries to ask about current events in Uganda, but in order to change the subject Amin tells Nicholas to try out the car and take him to his plane. On the way the presidential motorcade is attacked and everyone inside the first few vehicles is killed. Nicholas and Amin survive and speed off, before the rebels realize that Amin is not dead. Once at the airport Amin flies into a rage and shows signs of extreme paranoia.
5. Nicholas Garrigan reports to Idi Amin that he happened to see the health minister and a white man talking at the Holiday Inn lounge. He was not sure what, if anything, was going on but thought Amin should know. What was the topic of the conversation?

Answer: penicillin for the hospitals

He discovers the truth when he meets with the British diplomat Stone and a reporter. He reports the official line that the minister was trying to embezzle money and flee the country. They then mention to Nicholas that a number of people have gone missing, but despite some trepidation he thinks they are merely racist and bitter towards Idi Amin.
6. What is the name of Idi Amin's wife, who has an affair with Nicholas Garrigan?

Answer: Kay

The three wrong answers were the name of some of Idi's other real life wives. They first meet when Nicholas comes to treat her son for a seizure. They then meet up again at a Playboy like pool party and end up having sex.
7. What happens to the wife of Idi Amin who has an affair with Nicholas Garrigan?

Answer: killed

Somehow Amin finds out about Kay's infidelity and her pregnancy. She planned to have an abortion, but the local hospital refused, as they figured Amin would find out and they would all be killed. Nicholas is detained by Amin on an unrelated manner. When he finally gets free, he rushes to the hospital where she went and finds her dead.

The scene is one of the most gruesome in the movie. Her body had been dismembered and sewn back together as a message to Nicholas regarding betrayal and its consequences.
8. Due to an alleged slight and the fact that he feels that they are leeches on the country, what group does Idi Amin have expelled from Uganda?

Answer: Asians

Although referring to them in the most general way as "the Asians", he specifically wants the Indians and Pakistanis out. Nicholas tries to warn him not to do it because of the potential fallout. In real life this was a disastrous move for Amin, as they acted as the backbone of the economy.

When their business were handed over to Ugandans, they were run into the ground and led to a major recession. In the movie Nicholas suggests a series of press conferences to make Amin appear more human.
9. A hijacked plane lands in Uganda, which Idi Amin plans to use for political purposes. From what country were the hijackers?

Answer: Palestine

Amin calls them his "Palestinian brothers", and wants to help them, to show the world what a great leader he is. The movie's epilogue revealed that two days later Israeli armed forces stormed the airport and saved nearly all the remaining hostages. In real life it was this action that perhaps most led to his downfall.

His failure to stop them was seen as a sign of weakness and was pounced upon by the opposition.
10. Ultimately Nicholas Garrigan is able to escape from Uganda, with some of the released hostages. Who is his main source of assistance in this endeavor?

Answer: Dr. Junju

Nicholas decides he wants out and attempts to kill Idi Amin with poisoned pills. One of Amin's bodyguards attempts to test the pills on a boy but Nicholas intervenes. This leads to Nicholas being savagely beaten. Amin reveals he knew everything about the affair and plans to torture Nicholas.

When the guards believe that Nicholas is dead they toss him on the floor in a heap. Dr. Junju gives him a shot of adrenaline to restart his heart. The doctor tells him that although he deserves to die, because he is white he is the only one who can tell the rest of the world what is really going on in Uganda.

He sneaks Nicholas in with a group of hostages that will be released. As a result Amin's men find Dr. Junju and shoot him in the head.
