Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Miguel and Tulio escape from the Spanish soldiers who were persuing them?

Answer: They jumped into barrels

Miguel and Tulio (voiced by Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline respectively) were gambling with loaded dice against big, nasty-looking sailors. Convinced that the pair were cheating, one sailor insisted that the next roll would be with his dice. Miguel and Tulio managed to roll their seven, but Tulio's loaded dice tumbled from his shirt, exposing their con.

Miguel and Tulio were able to escape from the angry sailors by pretending to fight with one another. In order to escape from an angry bull and the Spanish soldiers chasing them, the two con men jumped from a roof into two barrels of water.
2. Miguel and Tulio intended to board Cortes' ship, so that they could travel to El Dorado.

Answer: False

After Miguel and Tulio jumped from the roof of a building into barrels, they were transported to Cortes' ship. Just as they were forming escape plans to jump off the boat and head to the dock, two sailors put a heavy chest on top of the barrels, preventing them from escaping.

The two were caught and imprisoned by Cortes, although they later escaped in a rowboat. Although Miguel wanted to find El Dorado, it was completely by chance that the pair washed up on the island where the lost city of gold is located.
3. Who voiced Tzekel-Kan?

Answer: Armand Assante

Tzekel-Kan is El Dorado's high priest, who became (rightly!) suspicious of Miguel and Tulio.

Armand Assante has also acted in "American Gangster" as Dominic Cattano, and "ER" as Richard Elliot. He was born on 4th October 1949 in New York, USA.

Edward James Olmos was the voice of the Chief, Jim Cummings voiced Cortes and Kevin Kline voiced Tulio.
4. What did Miguel and Tulio pretend to be, once they arrived in El Dorado?

Answer: Gods

Everyone except Chel believed that the pair were gods, come to live in El Dorado. Early after Miguel and Tulio arrived in the city, they had to prove that they were gods. Tzekel-Kan insisted that they "visit [their] wrath upon this nonbeliever" (the Chief) and show them the "truth of [their] divinity".

Stepping aside, Miguel and Tulio looked ridiculous as they began to bicker amongst themselves - but when Tulio yelled "STOP!", a volcano stopped exploding. This was by accident, of course, yet it was impressive for the villagers.
5. When did Tzekel-Kan know that Miguel and Tulio were not who they were pretending to be?

Answer: When he saw Miguel bleed

Like everyone else in the city, Tzekel-Kan believed that Miguel and Tulio were gods. However, they did not live up to his expectations - they did not want to sacrifice an El Dorado man to Xibalba, and they were clearly inferior at playing the ball game the gods had supposedly invented. Miguel in particular was more compassionate than vengeful, as Tzekel-Kan expected a god to be.

Tzekel-Kan finally had his suspicions confirmed when he made Miguel and Tulio play ball. Tulio accidentally hit Miguel in the face, which made him bleed. Tzekel-Kan saw this, and knew they were not gods. Later in the film, Tzekel-Kan said, "Gods don't bleed."
6. Who was NOT a character?

Answer: Miriam

Miguel and Tulio first encountered Chel as she was attempting to escape from El Dorado. She had taken gold from the temple and was trying to leave the city. Altivo is Cortes' war horse, who accompanied Miguel and Tulio since their escape from the ship. Tannabok is the down-to-earth and thoughtful chief of El Dorado.

Miriam, the incorrect answer, is actually a character from the Dreamworks film, "The Prince of Egypt" (1998).
7. What did Miguel and Tulio say "was not right" when Tzekel-Kan tried to sacrifice a man?

Answer: The stars

Tzekel-Kan had wanted to give the gods a tribute, as he was unsatisfied by the feast the Chief had given them the night before. Miguel and Tulio were excited by the prospect of tribute, but were very much against the sacrifice of an innocent man.

Stepping in to stop the sacrifice, Tulio said, "The stars are not in position for this tribute!". Supportive as ever, Miguel added, "Like he said! Stars!... Can't do it... Not today."
8. Who told Miguel and Tulio the meaning of "Xibalba"?

Answer: Chel

Xibabla is the Spirit World. During the tribute to Miguel and Tulio, attractive women appeared with plates filled with gold. They approached the two men and when the Chief asked "To Xibalba?", Miguel and Tulio yelled "To Xibalba!".

As the pair had no clue about El Dorado tributes and customs, they were very distraught when the women chucked most of the gold over a drop into the swirling vortex below.
9. Who always wanted to go back to Spain?

Answer: Tulio

Miguel wanted to stay in El Dorado as a god, but Tulio wanted to go back to Spain with the gold as they planned. Although they had said that they would go and "live like kings" in Spain, Miguel considered king as a "step-down" from god.
10. Did Miguel and Tulio ever leave El Dorado?

Answer: Yes

Yes, they did. As Miguel initially wanted to stay in El Dorado and Tulio wanted to leave with Chel and lots of gold, it looked like the end of their friendship. Seeing that Tulio would have difficulties leaving El Dorado on his boat, Miguel decided to go with his friend and help him.

Unfortunately, when they were steering the boat, it crashed into rocks, making Miguel, Tulio, Altivo, Chel and all the gold go flying! Luckily, though, this prevented Cortes and his soldiers, lead by Tzekel-Kan, from finding El Dorado, as it collapsed the entrance to the city of gold.
