Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Calvera (Eli Wallach) was the leader of a group of bandits who would frequently raid a poor Mexican village, taking food and supplies from the villagers. What did the village elder suggest that the villagers do?

Answer: Go to the border to get guns

Calvera and his men would ride into the village and take whatever they wanted. The men who lived there were mainly farmers, and it was their crops that were being stolen. They visited the village elder, "The Old Man" (Vladimir Sokoloff), to ask for advice, and he told them to go to the border to get guns.

He gave them a pocket watch to sell and told them to sell anything else they had to get guns and then fight against Calvera. So three of the villagers headed for the border.
2. When the three villagers first saw Chris Adams (Yul Brynner) and Vin Tanner (Steve McQueen) together, what were Chris and Vin doing?

Answer: Driving a hearse to a cemetery

A traveling salesman had found a body and paid the undertaker to have it buried. The undertaker agreed, but the body belonged to an Indian and some of the people in the town objected to having an Indian buried in their cemetery. The salesman was aghast: "I never knew you had to be anything but a corpse to get into Boot Hill." The undertaker explained that he couldn't find anyone to drive the hearse for fear of being shot. Chris and Vin had been watching the exchange, and Chris volunteered to drive with Vin agreeing to ride shotgun (literally).

The townsfolk followed behind at a distance along with the three Mexican villagers. Vin had to fire his shotgun along the way, and when they reached the graveyard, Chris fired his gun and grazed two men who were trying to block them from bringing in the casket.

In the end, the casket made it into the graveyard, and the hearse was returned to the undertaker in one piece. According to several sources, Brynner and McQueen were not the best of buddies during the making of the film. McQueen was apparently upset that he didn't have much dialogue, and he did his best to compete for attention in his scenes with Brynner. According to Robert Vaughn's autobiography "A Fortunate Life", McQueen "was intensely competitive, even to the point of being paranoid" and that McQueen believed Brynner even used a pearl-handled gun in the film to keep the attention on him, which Vaughn noted meant that "nobody would be looking at Steve McQueen".
3. After hearing the villagers' story, Chris decided to recruit five additional men for the task. The first man to show up to join the group was a young wannabe gunslinger named Chico (Horst Buchholz). He ran off when Chris intimidated him, but what creatures did he later use to convince Chris to let him join the group?

Answer: Fish

Chris told the villagers that it was cheaper to buy men than to buy guns, so he put out the word that he was looking for men to join an operation. Chris first noticed Chico back when he (Chris) and Vin were driving the hearse up the hill. Vin pointed him out, thinking he was a potential shooter, but when Chris looked back at him, Chico waved with a goofy smile, and Chris said, "I don't think so". Chico later showed up to join the operation, but Chris intimidated him with his gun skills, and Chico ran off: "The graveyards are full of boys who were very young and very proud".

But Chico was persistent. After Chris had recruited his men and they were headed to the village, Chico followed behind them, which bothered the men: "I'm getting a stiff neck keeping track of him".

But when they finally thought they'd lost him, he turned out to be in front of them. He'd caught some fish and hung them on a branch for the men to find. They then found him cooking fish, and Chris waved him into the group.

The opening credits to the film listed the actor as "Introducing Horst Buchholz". He was a popular German actor, who was trying to develop a career in English-speaking cinema. He had already appeared in the 1959 Hayley Mills film "Tiger Bay", but his role in "The Magnificent Seven" was far meatier; he had a significant part of the dialogue in the film.
4. Why did Chris's fortune-hunter friend Harry (Brad Dexter) join the group, even though Chris told him the pay was minimal?

Answer: He thought Chris wasn't telling him the whole story about the reward.

After Chris put out the word that he was looking for men, Harry showed up: "I heard you got a contract open", but Chris told him it wasn't a job for "a high stepper like you" and that the operation would only pay "a gold eagle, room and board [for] six weeks gunning for some farmers". Harry wasn't convinced: "What's underneath?" and when Chris replied, "Only what I told you", Harry persisted: "Gold? Cattle? Payroll?" He was convinced that Chris was holding back on all the details, and no matter how much Chris said otherwise, Harry decided to join, expecting that the true bounty would eventually be revealed.

Although the actor Brad Dexter had over seventy credits during his career, he was probably best-known for his role as Harry Luck in this film.

But he did have one other claim to fame: He saved Frank Sinatra from drowning. According to "The New York Times", Sinatra was caught by an undertow while swimming off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, in 1964, and was 200 yards from shore when Dexter swam out to him and kept him afloat until a surfer was able to pull him ashore on a surfboard.
5. Which member of the seven was particularly skilled at throwing knives?

Answer: Britt (James Coburn)

When Chris went to see Britt (Coburn), he saw him kill a man with a throw of a knife after being challenged to a duel. But Britt initially turned Chris down on his offer to join the group; as Chris said, Britt didn't care about the money - he just enjoyed the danger and the competition.

But he later changed his mind and joined the group. Bernardo O'Reilly (Bronson) was a high-priced hired gun who had fallen on hard times, and he was willing to work for the meager pay. The stylishly-dressed Lee (Vaughn) heard about the offer and decided to join because he was on the run and needed to get out of the country for a while. Tanner (McQueen) originally turned down the job because "it wouldn't even pay for my bullets", and he had a better offer as a store clerk, but he had a change of heart when he listened to the villagers.
6. After spending time training the villagers to fight, they were ready when the bandit Calvera returned to the village. Many of Calvera's men were killed in the shootout, and the villagers didn't think he would return, but Chico informed them that Calvera was coming back. How did he know this?

Answer: He had infiltrated Calvera's camp.

Training the villagers to fight had been no easy feat. The villagers weren't skilled with guns, so instead they were told: "You take the gun like this and use it like a club". But along with the help of the seven (or rather, the six since Lee was suffering from a case of nerves and hid out rather than participate in the fight), many of the bandits were killed and the others were chased away. Lee had a nightmare after the battle, and he told the villagers who came to calm him that it was "the final supreme idiocy, coming here to hide.

The deserter hiding out in the middle of a battlefield". While the villagers were celebrating their victory over Calvera, Chico had tracked the bandits to their camp, and he posed as one of them to hear their plans.

He heard that the bandits hadn't eaten for three days, and they were "starving and broke". When he found out that they were going to attack the village again, he returned to the village and shared the bad news.
7. Some of the villagers decided that they preferred to take their chances with Calvera and wanted the seven to leave. Instead the seven decided to track Calvera down and finish their job. What happened when they went to ambush Calvera at his camp?

Answer: They found the camp abandoned.

Although the villagers were initially elated with the outcome of their battle, they were aghast when they realized that it wasn't going to be a one-time thing: "That is not what you were hired for". When Chico informed them that Calvera was planning another attack, some of the villagers decided it would be better for them to just give Calvera what he wanted: "All of you. Get on your horses and go. Let Calvera have the food. Give him what he wants.

At least we'll be alive". The seven, though, wanted to finish the job: "We took a contract".

They headed to the campsite that Chico had infiltrated, but it was abandoned. When they returned to the village, it appeared to be abandoned too, but they soon discovered that the Calvera had taken the village hostage, and the seven were surrounded.
8. Why did Calvera let the seven ride out of the village rather than kill them?

Answer: He was afraid killing them would bring more trouble from the U.S.

Calvera told them that it was a matter of practicality: "They hear about it up north. Maybe some friends of yours make more trouble for me. A man who never wants no trouble". When Chris asked what would happen to the villagers, Calvera responded, "What happens to these people will happen whether I kill you first or not".

But then Calvera quietly told Chris that it was "just a little gesture to show these people who the real boss is". So Calvera allowed the seven to ride out and sent some of his men to ride with them. Once they were away from the village, Calvera's men returned the guns to the seven and then returned to join Calvera.
9. After the seven had been given their weapons back, which member decided NOT to return to the village, even though he later changed his mind?

Answer: Harry (Brad Dexter)

Chico initially railed against the villagers: "All they care about is their precious crops and the miserable dirt they dig in. I hate 'em. I hate 'em all", but Chris saw through his anger and made Chico admit that he too had been a farmer before he decided to become a gunslinger. Britt was the first to declare his intention of returning to face Calvera: "Nobody throws me my own guns and says run. Nobody", with Vin agreeing: "I think I'll ride back to that village". Harry was aghast: "You're crazy, all of ya! They won't lift a finger to help. Think of the odds".

He tried to get Lee to come with him, and Chris told Lee it was OK to go because he didn't "owe anything to anybody", but Lee was probably feeling guilty over his earlier cowardice and responded, "except to myself". Harry looked them over and rode off with one final: "You're crazy, all of ya".

But while the six were engaged in a shootout in the village, Harry rode in to help Chris who was pinned down by gunfire: "Hold on Chris, I'll get ya outta there".
10. At the end of the film, only three of the seven were still alive. Who did NOT survive the final battle?

Answer: Britt (James Coburn)

Harry (Dexter) was the first of the seven to be shot, just as he returned to help them during the firefight. Chris dragged him into a building where he died after Chris told him that there really was a treasure - sacks of gold worth half a million. O'Reilly (Bronson) was shot next while he was on top of a building, but he rolled off the building and continued to shoot. Lee (Vaughn) recovered from his cowardice and killed some bandits who were holding villagers captive.

While he was watching the villagers pummel the bandits with chairs and shovels, he was shot and killed. Britt (Coburn) was shot and died just as he was about to throw his knife. O'Reilly was shot again and killed after he pushed some village boys to safety. Chris shot Calvera, whose last words were, "You came back. For a place like this. Why? A man like you. Why?" In the end, Chris, Vin, and Chico survived and rode out of the village, but Chico ended up returning to stay with a girl with whom he'd become enamored. Chris had the final words: "The old man was right. Only the farmers won. We lost. We always lose".
