Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Throughout the movie, Cindy and Jim Green were telling the story of their time with Timothy. Where were they telling their tale?

Answer: an adoption agency

Cindy and Jim wanted to adopt a child because they were unable to have children of their own. In the time they had to convince the adoption agency that they deserved a child, they decided to tell the story of Timothy. Most of the movie was a flashback to their time with Timothy.

Cindy was played by Jennifer Garner and Jim was played by Joel Edgerton.
2. Cindy and Jim lived in Stanleyville, North Carolina where the biggest employer was a factory. What was made at the factory?

Answer: pencils

Jim worked at the factory. Cindy worked at the town's museum, which focused on the pencils. Throughout the movie there were many layoffs, which caused a lot of tension in the town.
3. The night Cindy and Jim found out they could not have children, they wrote all the qualities they wanted in their child on pieces of paper and placed them in a box. What did they do with the box?

Answer: buried it in their garden

Jim came up with the idea to write out all the qualities to help cheer up Cindy. There were many qualities they wanted, such as being musical. They also put in name ideas. They then put the qualities in a box and buried it in their large garden.
4. In the middle of the night, Jim and Cindy were woken by noises in their house and they found a young boy, named Timothy, inside. What was strange about him?

Answer: He had leaves growing on his legs.

Timothy apparently came out of the Greens' garden where a huge hole had appeared in the spot where they buried their box. When Cindy gave him a bath to clean the mud off of him, she found leaves on his legs. Timothy called Cindy and Jim "Mom and Dad". The fact that his name was Timothy was odd, too, since it was the only boy's name they had put in the box.

Timothy was played by C.J. Adams.
5. The day after Timothy appeared, what event took place at the Greens' house?

Answer: a family picnic

Cindy and Jim slept in, so Timothy was the one who answered the door when Cindy's sister knocked. Cindy and Jim told everyone that they had just adopted Timothy. During the picnic, Timothy was able to meet a lot of Cindy and Jim's relatives, including Jim's father and Cindy's aunt and uncle who raised her.
6. What was the name of the girl that became Timothy's best friend?

Answer: Joni

Timothy first really met Joni when she took part in a bullying incident when a couple of boys at school made him into a human ice cream sundae. At a pool party, Timothy accidentally kicked her in the face in the pool. Not long after, though, they become very close. Joni rode him around town on her bike. They also spent a lot of time out in the forest. Cindy and Jim were afraid they were getting too close.

Joni was played by Odeya Rush.
7. Which member of Timothy's family died?

Answer: Cindy's uncle

Uncle Bub had a heart attack and the Greens' went to visit him in the hospital. At one point everyone but Timothy left the room. The two of them were laughing. Then Bub went into cardiac arrest and died.

Uncle Bub was played by M. Emmet Walsh.
8. What sport did Timothy play?

Answer: soccer

Jim and Cindy signed Timothy up for soccer to help him cope with Bub's death. At first the coach did not want him to join, but they convinced him to let Timothy join. Timothy was not good at soccer and the coach refused to play him. Timothy was fine with this, though, and helped by giving people water.
9. Timothy told Jim and Cindy to design a pencil, and after many nights working on it, they completed it. What was it made of?

Answer: leaves

Jim showed the pencil to his boss, who tried to pass the idea off as his own. At a town meeting, the factory announced that they would be making this new pencil. When Timothy found out that Jim's boss was the one credited with making it, he confronted him. Soon, the truth came out, including the truth about Timothy's leaves.
10. Who did Timothy draw a picture of?

Answer: Cindy's boss

On "Bring Your Child To Work Day", Timothy went to work with Cindy at the museum. On that day a portrait of Ms. Crudstaff, Cindy's uptight boss, was put on display. She thought that the painting was off. Timothy said that he might have done better, so she allowed him to draw her. The picture came out great because of his artistic quality. But, because of his quality of being honest to a fault, he drew in her chin hair. When Ms. Crudstaff asked Cindy what else she wasn't telling her, Cindy went off and told her many things. Cindy was fired.

Ms. Crudstaff was played by Dianne Wiest.
11. What event did the Greens attend at Cindy's sister's house?

Answer: a concert

Brenda, Cindy's sister, held an annual concert at her house where she and her children performed. At the end of the concert Brenda announced that Timothy would be performing, since Cindy had said he was musical. Cindy and Jim tried to leave, but Timothy insisted on going up and performing. Timothy, Jim, and Cindy ended up singing "Low Rider".

Brenda was played by Rosemarie DeWitt.
12. What happened when Timothy finally got to play in the last soccer game?

Answer: He scored the winning goal for the other team.

Jim and Cindy were excited for him to play, since one of the qualities they put in the box was to score the winning goal. When a team member was hurt, Jim and Cindy were able to get the coach to put him in. At first, Timothy just stood on the field, but after soaking in some sun, he was able to play great. In the end however, he scored in the wrong goal and the other team won.
13. When all of Timothy's leaves fell off, he left.

Answer: True

When they all went back home from the town meeting about the pencil factory, Timothy told them that when his leaves fell off, he had to go. Then, his final leaf dropped off. Suddenly it started to rain, ending the city's drought, and the power went out. In the dark, Timothy disappeared.
14. What did Timothy do with all of his leaves?

Answer: He gave them to people he loved.

In a note Timothy left, he explained that he gave them away because they were gifts. He gave them to Brenda, Bub, Ms. Crudstaff, his coach, Reggie, Grandpa Jim, Joni, and Jim and Cindy. He put one leaf in Bub's casket. Joni got two, which were made into earrings.
15. Were Cindy and Jim able to adopt a child?

Answer: Yes

At the end, the woman and man from the adoption agency came to the Greens' house. They brought a little girl with them. Her name was Lily.
