Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the early 80s, Cameron wrote a book that was adapted as a movie. Phoebe Cates, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Judge Reinhold starred in this movie. What was the name of the film?

Answer: Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Cameron adapted his novel to the screen for this Amy Heckerling directed film. Anthony Edwards, Nicolas Cage and Eric Stoltz all made small appearances in this movie before they were famous.
2. Cameron's directorial debut was the film "Say Anything...". Which of the following songs appeared on the soundtrack to this film?

Answer: "Skankin' To The Beat" - Fishbone

This song was the song that John Cusack was actually playing during the famous scene where Lloyd Dobler holds the boombox over his head outside of Diane Cort's window. In the film, we hear "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. That scene was the last scene of the film to be shot, and almost wasn't.

The scene was shot on the last day of re-shooting and during the last minutes of daylight. After many takes, John finally nailed the emotions that Lloyd was feeling, with seconds to spare before the daylight ran out.
3. This movie, released in 1984, was the second movie Cameron wrote before making his directorial debut with "Say Anything..." It starred Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz and Lea Thompson.

Answer: The Wild Life

Eric Stoltz also played Vahlere in "Say Anything...", and was in "Some Kind of Wonderful" with Lea Thompson. Chris Penn and Lea Thompson also co-starred in "All The Right Moves". Cameron shared writing credits for "The Wild Life" with Art Linson, the prolific producer who produced "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", "Singles", "Heat", and "Fight Club". Linson also directed this film, which is a typical 80s teenage screwball comedy about a group of hard partying kids and the zany adventures they encounter.
4. "Love is a game. Easy to start. Hard to finish." is the tagline to which film, Cameron's second directorial outing?

Answer: Singles

This movie is full of cameos from the pioneers of the "Seattle sound" that took over the music industry in the early '90s. Most of Pearl Jam had substantial roles as members of the band Citizen Dick, and Soundgarden even performed for the film. Mother Love Bone graffiti is displayed in another shot, constantly showing Cameron's love affair with both music and Seattle.
5. Paula Abdul handled the choreography for this film, Cameron's third directorial effort.

Answer: Jerry Maguire

This was Cameron's most successful film, earning Cuba Gooding Jr. his first Oscar, and one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in Academy history. "Jerry Maguire" was the story of a sports agent who finds that there are things more important in life than success when he falls in love.
6. What famous 70s era guitar player coached the boys of Stillwater in Cameron's mostly autobiographical film "Almost Famous"?

Answer: Peter Frampton

This, in my opinion, is Cameron's best film to date. The story was plucked from Cameron's experiences as a teenaged writer for Rolling Stone in the 70s. Billy Crudup and the rest of the actors which made up the band Stillwater actually learned to play for this movie.
7. Jason Lee and Tom Cruise both starred in a Cameron Crowe film for the second time in this mind-bending flick, can you name it?

Answer: Vanilla Sky

This film was a remake of Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 film "Abre los Ojos". Amenabar's first english language film was the highly successful Nicole Kidman vehicle "The Others". "Vanilla Sky" tells the story of a man who has it all, however his life falls apart after a near fatal car accident leaves him disfigured. Soon after the accident, he begins to see things and remember things that cannot be real, and eh slowly begins to lose his mind.
8. There are many sing along scenes in Cameron Crowe movies. Can you tell me the name of the character who sang along with the song "Ricky, Don't Lose That Number" in one of his movies?

Answer: James Court

James Court, played by the excellent John Mahoney, sang this song while heading to the nursing home to tell his daughter Diane she had just won a fellowship to study in England in the film "Say Anything...".
9. What Tom Cruise movie did Cameron make a brief uncredited cameo in, though he had nothing else to do with the project?

Answer: Minority Report

Cameron was a bus passenger who recognizes Tom Cruise's character John Anderton when he began his run from the law. Cameron also appeared in "Singles" as a reporter in a club, and his hand appears briefly in "Say Anything..." as the hand that changes the cassette tape in the party at Valiere's scene.
10. Which of the following people have appeared in THE MOST of Cameron's movies?

Answer: Alice Marie Crowe

Yes, Cameron has put his mother into every film he has ever directed. For the record, Jeremy Piven appeared in two Crowe films, as did Jason Lee. Eric Stoltz appeared in quite a few Crowe related projects, due to a promise Cameron made to him long ago to put Eric in all of his movies.
