Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mitch is getting ready to help Cathy from the house into Melanie's car. She makes a request before she steps outside. What does Cathy want to take along with her when the Brenners are leaving Bodega Bay?

Answer: the lovebirds

Cathy says the lovebirds haven't harmed anyone. Mitch is okay with the idea. I'm sure if she were to ask Lydia the answer would be "No!". It is surprising that the presence of the lovebirds doesn't set off the horde of birds surrounding the house.
2. Mitch has decided that they need to get Melanie to a hospital after the brutal attack on her upstairs. Mrs. Brenner bandages Melanie up and then, along with Mitch, she helps transport Melanie out to the car. Mitch opens the front door and as they head out, Melanie comes out of her trance briefly. What frightens her enough to suddenly back off?

Answer: the sight of the birds

Melanie has a flashback like the one she had after she woke up on the couch from the attack. Mitch and Lydia have to coax her off the porch to get her in the car. Melanie and Lydia's bond is now cemented. Melanie grasps Lydia's wrist in the car and looks up at Lydia as if she were a mother figure.
3. The Brenners are resting from the recent attack and are fast asleep. Melanie is wide awake and hears flapping upstairs. She tries to wake Mitch but can't. She grabs a flashlight and attempts to check it out herself. She slowly opens the bedroom door and steps in. The light shines on a large hole in the roof above the bed. Melanie is instantly ravaged by all the birds that have gathered in the room. In the middle of her ordeal, she utters something out of delirium. What does she say?

Answer: "Is Cathy in the house?"

Melanie happens to be concerned for Cathy's safety at that intense moment. She mutters, "Oh, Mitch" as she is slowly falling to the floor right before that. Mechanical birds could not be used for this scene so real ones were flung at her. The special effects man didn't give her a hint till the last second, so the whole attack is pretty much real.
4. The Brenners are settled in their boarded-up home after the school and restaurant attacks. Cathy asks Mitch why the birds are killing people before becoming ill. Soon after, the birds reappear and tear the house apart trying to get to the occupants. What happens just seconds before they start crashing into the doors?

Answer: shrill screams pierce the air

The gulls break through the windows after they move in on the house. Their shrieks alarm Melanie and the Brenners. There is no doorbell ringing or thunderstorm. The birds supply all the thunder. Mitch tackles the flock all by himself and ends up fairly bloody.
5. The Tides Restaurant is soon hit with another bird attack after Melanie arrives there. The diner patrons and staff become involved in a distressing conversation about the birds. The cook, Sam, even comes out of the kitchen to satisfy his curiosity. The funniest part of this scene is a drunk at the end of the bar. What zany remark does he keep repeating to the crowd?

Answer: "'Tis the end of the world."

This remark is met with some equally humorous reactions. Helen, the waitress, adds, "Whoa unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may follow strong drink". An inebriated salesman who stumbles in looks back and winks at everyone to express how crazy the old fool is. If it weren't for the attacks taking center stage, this would be the highlight of the movie.

The drunk is played by Karl Swenson, who had another role that year - providing a voice for Merlin in "The Sword and the Stone".
6. Mrs. Bundy, another resident and customer, is an old woman who is very set in her ways. She is a bird expert and refuses to believe the birds are capable of such horror. When the salesman suggests they wipe the messy animals off the face of the Earth, Mrs. Bundy laughs. Why wouldn't it be possible to get rid of the birds?

Answer: there are too many species

Mrs. Bundy gives the patrons a rundown of the vast animal category. There are millions of species and quite a few billion birds that occupy the United States alone. When a past incident with fog is mentioned, Mrs. Bundy refers to the feathered creatures as "poor things". Ethel Griffies, who plays Mrs. Bundy, appears on "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" in "Bed of Roses".
7. After the restaurant attack ceases, Mitch and Melanie head back inside and find that the patrons have maneuvered into a hallway scared out of their wits. They look at Melanie with contempt. A customer, whose children are frightened, walks up to Melanie and blames her for the birds' behavior. What does the distraught woman say to Melanie?

Answer: "I think you're evil!"

Melanie then slaps her across the face to bring her back down to Earth. Then Helen, who is suspicious, hands Melanie her purse very polite-like. I'd say Helen does a 180 degree turn there. Doreen Lang, who plays the paranoid customer, married Arthur Franz. Arthur is the invisible man who meets Abbott and Costello in 1951.
8. Crows are chasing the school children down the hill. The crows begin picking out victims to strike. Michelle, Cathy's best friend, has a close encounter with one of the them. What happens when this particular crow meets up with Michelle?

Answer: she is thrown and loses her glasses

Michelle screams for Cathy. Cathy and Melanie pick Michelle up off the ground while picking off several crows. The crows are like fly strips when they are on the children. Another classmate with a crow on him is directed off the road and spins around a tree. What a great action shot! It's not so great for the kid, though. Cathy Brenner is played by Veronica Cartwright.

Her sister, Angela, is Penny on "Lost in Space".
9. Lydia is at the Fawcett farm to speak with Dan about the chickens. She enters and notices that Dan is not within speaking range. She is already seeing damage in his kitchen and she continues through the hallway to Dan's bedroom. There is a dead, upside-down gull against the window. As Lydia passes into the bedroom, she catches a glimpse of Dan. What is the first thing that Lydia sees on Dan?

Answer: his scratched foot

The whole room is torn apart. The camera slowly moves up Dan's body, exposing his injuries. It then zooms in twice to his mangled, decomposing face, This sends Lydia reeling out of the house in shock. She virtually cannot speak to George, the handyman, as she makes her way to the truck.
10. Al Malone is investigating the Brenner house after their second bird attack involving sparrows. Al and Mitch are discussing what to do about the sparrow entry and Lydia is cleaning some of the mess up. She goes over to her husband's picture to straighten it. What happens that makes her nearly jump out of her shoes?

Answer: A dead sparrow falls off the top of the picture

Lydia gasps and grabs her chest. Melanie notices it too and gapes in sympathy. Lydia is further taken aback when Melanie offers to stay the night. Later, she is grateful that Melanie and Mitch are both there during the crisis.
