Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You might think our team member rockinsteve would mostly like rock 'n' roll movies. Not so. Steve's favorite movie is "Blade Runner". A big part of the movie that made it so intriguing and atmospheric was the soundtrack. Which of these musicians, known for New Age music, was the composer of the music for this film?

Answer: Vangelis

Vangelis is known for his work on movie soundtracks; his best known work was the original music for the film "Chariots Of Fire".
2. Snowconeboy789 loves movies directed by Steven Spielberg. One of his earliest films was about a giant great white shark terrorizing New England waters. Can you name it?

Answer: Jaws

"Jaws", based on the novel by Peter Benchley, premiered in 1975. It was a horror/thriller film about an enormous great white shark terrorizing the waters around New England. "Jaws" was directed by Steven Spielberg, and starred Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, and Murray Hamilton. Three sequels to the film were released, but Benchley and Spielberg didn't participate in the making of those movies.
3. Team leader redwaldo wanted to go to the 'arthouse' part of the Cinemaplex to watch one of his favorite movies. This 1976 epic, starring Robert De Niro as Alfredo and Gerard Depardieu as Olmo, followed these two characters through the political upheavals in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. What was the title of this movie, that was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci?

Answer: 1900

"1900" depicted the lives of the two main characters, Alfredo and Olmo, both born on the same day in 1900. They represented different social backgrounds (landowner and poor peasant) as Italian Fascism rose to power. Other well known actors in the movie included Burt Lancaster and Donald Sutherland.

All the other movies listed were directed by Bertolucci; he won the Academy Award (Best Director) for "The Last Emperor" in 1987.
4. Captain Renault was shocked -'shocked'- to find that gambling was going on as he accepted his winnings from the roulette wheel and closed down the café. This scene is from a movie CmdrK never tires of watching. It took place in the early days of World War II when the characters in the film expected an imminent German invasion of North Africa. Which movie is it?

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" (1942) starred Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund. Set in Unoccupied French Morocco, the film concerned Europeans trying to get to Lisbon, Portugal (and from there to America) and the people who preyed on them, including Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains) the Prefect of Casablanca, who was unabashedly corrupt. The film won three Academy Awards including Best Picture. It was Bogart's 45th picture but his first as a romantic lead actor.
5. One of Wyambezi's favorite movies is a novel-based 1945 film starring Edward G. Robinson, Agnes Moorehead and the delightful Margaret O'Brien. It's the tender story of a small farm family and their close-knit community. The title is a quote taken from Chapter 2, Verse 15 in the King James Bible's Song of Solomon: "Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for___" Can you tell us the film's title?

Answer: Our Vines Have Tender Grapes

This was Dalton Trumbo's final screenplay, prior to the Hollywood blacklist debacle. Edward G. Robinson was cast against type and Margaret O'Brien delivered the sweet innocence for which she's known. It's a sentimental 'piece of fluff' about family love, honor and doing what's right for your fellow man that will have you feeling better about humanity once you've finished watching, making it a good Christmas movie as well.
6. One movie that trivvya recommends is based on the book, "Off Magazine Street". Filmed on location in New Orleans, La., it stars John Travolta as a former professor of literature, Gabriel Macht as Lawson Pines, a former professor's assistant and writer, and Scarlett Johansson as Purslane Hominy Will, a jaded teen estranged from her mother, Lorraine, who was seeking a career in the jazz music scene until her death. The music becomes a way for Pursy to learn about her mother and the secret she took to her grave. It was released in 2004. Can you name this movie?

Answer: A Love Song for Bobby Long

"Off Magazine Street" was written by Ronald Everett Capps and was loosely based on people and places he familiarized himself with while his son attended Tulane University. Many of the songs were written by his son, Grayson Capps.
7. One of casey317's favourite films is a 'mocumentary' which poked fun at an aging English 'heavy metal' band as they toured the U.S.A. Just like the lead guitarists' amplifier, casey317 gave it 11 out of 10 points. Which movie is it?

Answer: This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

"Spinal Tap" had many quotable lines but casey's favorite was an exchange between the lead guitar player (Nigel) and the director (Marty). Nigel: (describing his amplifier) "The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and..." Marty: "Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?" Nigel: "Exactly." Marty: "Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?" Nigel: "Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?"
8. Being a patriotic Western Australian, Tezza1551's favourite movie is not only adapted from a story by Western Australian writer, Gerald Glaskin, but is set in an area not far from where she lives. Which of the following is it?

Answer: A Waltz Through The Hills

Gerald Glaskin's novel, "A Waltz Through The Hills" was adapted as a movie in 1988 (released 1989) and featured two orphaned children who, on hearing they would be separated by the government if they were sent to orphanages, decided to walk from a small town near Narrogin in the Wheatbelt of W.A. to Fremantle, several hundred miles away.

They were assisted by Frank Smith, played by Ernie Dingo and the late Noongar Elder Ken Colbung as Aboriginal Tracker Danni Wandi. The children were played by Andre Jansen and Tina Kemp. Dan O'Herlihy played Uncle Tom, the yardman at the hotel.
9. With so many quotable lines and passages, Mel Brooks' brilliant comedy, "Young Frankenstein" never fails to give iCaramba a good laugh. In a classic scene, who did Igor confess (to Dr. Frankenstein) that the brain put in the creature's body belonged to?

Answer: Abby Normal

When Dr. Frankenstein sent his assistant to the Brain Depository to obtain the brain of Hans Delbruck - "a scholar and a saint" - Igor accidentally dropped the jar containing the brain, after being frightened by his own reflection in a mirror. He grabbed the next jar available, which was marked "Abnormal brain-do not use", and the doctor unknowingly transplanted it into the creature's body.
10. Can you name lesley153's favourite film? It was set almost exclusively in one place, and there were only men in the cast. The plot centred on one man's quest for truth, in the face of opposition from the rest of the cast.

Answer: 12 Angry Men

The most famous and, lesley thinks, best version of "12 Angry Men" was the 1957 film, directed by Sidney Lumet, which starred Henry Fonda. Only three minutes of the film were spent outside the jury room.

John Ford's film "Men Without Women" was made in 1930, and was set onboard an American submarine. It was based on a script by James McGuinness and had no connection with the 1927 anthology of short stories by Ernest Hemingway.

"The Caretaker", made in 1963, was based on Harold Pinter's play of the same name. It was directed by Clive Donner, and featured three dysfunctional men in a small, untidy studio flat.

"Children of Men", made in 2006, was set in the United Kingdom in 2027, and explored the effects of twenty years of global human infertility. There were characters of both sexes in the film, including one who had to be protected because she was pregnant.
