Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what country does "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" take place?

Answer: Mexico

In Spanish, "Sierra" means "sawtoothed mountain range". "Madre," of course, is "mother".
2. Who wrote the novel on which the movie was based?

Answer: B. Traven

Traven was an odd, reclusive man who was so hermit-like he made J.D. Salinger look like a publicity hound. Nobody even seems to know what his first name was. They just call him "B"!
3. Who directed the film?

Answer: John Huston

A director rarely gets the chance to direct his own father, but John Huston got that chance here since his father Walter was one of the stars. I wonder who directed who! In addition to "Treasure", Huston also directed Humphrey Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), "Across the Pacific" (1942), "Key Largo" (1948), and "The African Queen" (1951). John Huston was the father of Angelica Huston.
4. Who played the American who gets ticked off when Bogey keeps bumming money off him?

Answer: John Huston

Huston also had a career as an actor. He didn't give himself much to do here, but it's interesting to watch the director on camera. His character is usually referred to as "White Suit".
5. In what year does the film begin?

Answer: 1925

It's not easy to spot, but in the first shot of the film we see a close-up of a poster for the national lottery which says the drawing will be on February 14, 1925. In the sparse footage that was actually shot in a Mexican city, however, the people's clothes and the two cars you see do not fit the 1920s.
6. What member of the cast also appeared in "The Magnificent Ambersons"?

Answer: Tim Holt

Holt played Bob Curtin in "Treasure". In "Ambersons", he was the headstrong, spoiled George Amberson, who forbade his mother to marry Eugene. Most of Holt's work was in "B" westerns, similar to those made by Alan "Rocky" Lane and "Lash" La Rue. He made a ton of these films in the forties and early fifties and didn't work much after that. Has dad was actor Jack Holt, who, according to the imdb, had a bit part in "Treasure" as a flophouse bum. I looked hard but could not spot him for sure.
7. What member of the cast also appeared in "Bullets or Ballots", "The Maltese Falcon", "All Through the Night", and "The Mysterious Intruder"?

Answer: Barton MacLane

MacLane played Pat McCormick, the man who tried to cheat Dobbs and Curtin out of their pay. Bogey appeared in all of the choices except "The Mysterious Intruder" (1946). Like many actors who often played criminals, MacLane also sometimes played a cop. In "Maltese Falcon", for example, he played Detective Dundy.
8. What member of the cast also appeared in some of the "Our Gang" (AKA "Little Rascals") shorts?

Answer: Robert Blake

Blake was born Mickey Gubitosi, and that was the name he used when appearing in "Our Gang" as "Mickey". In "Treasure", he's the kid who sells Bogey one-twentieth of a lottery ticket. His trouble with the law has been well documented.
9. What member of the cast won a silver medal in the 1928 Olympics?

Answer: Bruce Bennett

Bennett played Cody, the man who tries to horn in on the guys' mine. In 1928, Bennett was known as Herman Brix, and he medaled in the shot put. He later played Tarzan and some other roles as Herman Brix before changing his name and going on to a healthy career in Hollywood.
10. What actor has the line "I know what gold can do to men's souls"?

Answer: Walter Huston

Huston delivered a brilliant portrayal as Howard, the grizzled veteran prospector who wasn't surprised at anything that happened because he had seen it all before. He got the Oscar and deserved it. His speech in the flophouse is an excellent example of foreshadowing.
11. What actor has the line "If ya know what's good for ya, ya won't monkey around with Fred C. Dobbs"?

Answer: Humphrey Bogart

Bogey, as Fred C. Dobbs, seems to be suffering from paranoia, fearing the others will steal his "goods". He's angry and talking to himself while he works.
12. Most people associate "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" with this line: "Badges! We don't need no stinking badges", but, like "Play it again, Sam" supposedly being said in "Casablanca", this is a misquote. What is the actual line?

Answer: "Badges! We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges."

The quote is a lot longer than you'd expect. It was spoken by Alfonso Bedoya, who turned in a chilling performance as Gold Hat, the bandit chief.
13. Which of these characters is still alive at the end of the film?

Answer: Curtin

Curtin seemed to have been killed but he recovered. Gold Hat was arrested and executed. Dobbs was killed by Gold Hat. Cody was killed in the shootout with the bandits.
14. When the bandits rob Dobbs, they go through his goods, as well as everyone else's. What happens to the gold dust?

Answer: It blows away

Gold Hat cuts into the bags and doesn't recognize the contents as gold dust. He thinks the men have weighed down the hides so they can sell them for more money. Of course, that's what a thief WOULD think! The gold dust finally blows away in the strong winds.
15. Humphrey Bogart received the Academy Award for his performance in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre".

Answer: False

The Academy nominated Dan Dailey (?) but somehow forgot Bogey, whose performance still shines today. Laurence Olivier won for "Hamlet", and I don't think many could argue with that, but couldn't they at least give Bogey a chance to say, "It's wonderful just to be nominated"?
