Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film's protagonist, Ivy Walker, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard is ___________.

Answer: blind

Although Ivy is blind, she does not let her handicap keep her from living a full life. Later on in the movie, she makes a dangerous journey into the woods to get medicine for her ailing fiancee. Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of actor/director Ron Howard, makes a remarkable screen debut.
2. Who is "main" love triangle between in the movie?

Answer: Ivy, Lucius, and Noah

Ivy, Lucius and Kitty, as well as Alice, Edward and Tabitha are also love triangles in the movie, but they are not the primary one. Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix) is strong and taciturn, while Noah Percy (Adrien Brody) is mentally impaired, but both men vie for Ivy's affections.
3. One of the most haunting lines from the movie is "let not the bad color be seen, it attracts them", said by Ivy after a flower of that color is found. What is the bad color?

Answer: red

The color red supposedly attracts the monsters from the woods and is taboo in the village. When the monsters came into the village, they painted red marks on all the doors as warning. The color red is significant in many of M. Night Shyamalan's movies, especially in "The Sixth Sense".

The color yellow is a pacifying color in the movie. Ivy wears a yellow cloak for safety when she goes into the woods.
4. During the course of the movie, which of these characters go into the forbidden woods?

Answer: all of these

Noah picks red flowers for Ivy from the woods and later goes into the woods dressed as a monster. Lucius attempts to go into the woods to get medicine after the death of a young child. After he enters the woods, the attacks on the village start. Ivy enters the woods to get medicine to save Lucius.
5. Who gets married in the movie?

Answer: Kitty

At first, Kitty is infatuated with Lucius, but he is in love with her sister, Ivy. There is a funny scene in the movie where Kitty proclaims her love for Lucius, but he doesn't reciprocate and just stares at her strangely. The next scene shows Kitty crying on her bed because Lucius has rejected her.

However, Kitty soon recovers and marries a guy who likes his clothes wrinkle-free. The wedding scene in this movie reminds me of the one in "Fiddler on the Roof". The joyous festivities are spoiled in both movies.

In "Fiddler on the Roof", the wedding reception is ruined by a pogrom and in this film, by a monster attack.
6. What is the only thing that Lucius is afraid of?

Answer: Fear for Ivy's safety

Lucius holds the record for standing on a stump at the village's border the longest, so he is not afraid of the woods. He admits that he is fearful of Ivy's safety when he confesses his love for her.
7. Who is stabbed in the movie?

Answer: Lucius

After Lucius and Ivy announce their engagement, a jealous Noah stabs Lucius. This is an interesting scene in the movie to watch. First, Noah is crying about the news and Lucius is comforting him. Then Lucius stops talking and the camera pans down and shows that Noah has just stabbed him.

After Lucius collapses, Noah takes the knife out and puts it on the table. Then he thinks better of it, retrieves the knife, walks away but then returns to stab Lucius again.
8. What is the twist in this movie?

Answer: all of these

M. Night Shyamalan is famous, or rather, imfamous, for his plot twists, most notably in "The Sixth Sense". One of the elders, Edward Walker, Ivy's father, was a history professor who created the village as a utopia to preserve innocence because many of their loved ones have been savagely killed.

They fabricated the monsters to keep the villagers within the borders, so they can never go into the real world and lose their innocence. Noah finds one of costumes and dresses up in it, scaring Ivy. However, the village is a historical experiment gone awry.

In an attempt to keep the villagers from harm's way, no one is allowed into the woods, and many people die because they do not have modern medicines. The village is still corrupt from within because Noah attempts to murder Lucius.

As the adage goes, you can't protect people from themselves.
9. Who suffers an untimely demise in the movie?

Answer: Noah

After Lucius is stabbed, it seems like he isn't going to make it. However, he has a strong will to live because of his love for Ivy, and pulls through in the end. Noah, however, falls into a ditch and dies. It is poetic justice for the attempted murder of Lucius.
10. At the film's conclusion, the elders decide to preserve the village's way of life.

Answer: True

After Noah's death and Ivy's discovery that the monsters are not real, the elders debate whether they should keep living under the guise of 1897. Ultimately, the elders decide to attribute Noah's death to the monsters and continue deceiving the villagers.
