Which particular bit of silliness had Tom Hanks playing partner to a canine of the French persuasion?

Answer: Turner & Hooch

Hanks teamed up with a Dogue de Bordeaux in the 1989 comedy that had a neat and tidy detective partnered with a slob of a dog. The idea was that Hooch, the dog, was a witness to a murder that Hanks believed he could solve. While the critics hated the movie, it became one of the top 10 grossing doggie titles of its time.

Answer: Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Dodie Smith created the "101 Dalmatians" in literary form in 1956 and the story got the movie treatment in 1961 and 1996, as well as in a number of sequels, a TV series and a stage musical. It's all about a pair of Dalmatians, Pongo and Missis ,who gave birth to 15 pups.

The pups and others were kidnapped or bought by Cruela De Vil, who wanted to skin them and turn them into coats. With the aid of an Old English Sheepdog, the Dalmatian parents set out to rescue the pups from Hell Hall. Does it have a happy ending? Would Walt Disney have got involved if it didn't?

Answer: St. Bernard

St Bernards are from a breed of working dogs native to the Swiss Alps. Historically, they were used for hunting and guarding, but also came to be noted for their ability to locate those lost in the wintry mountains. They are often pictorially portrayed as carrying a small brandy barrel around their necks as sustenance to people they find. The breed took its name from a hospice on the St Bernard Pass between Italy and Switzerland.
