James Cole, the main character of the film, was a convict sent from the future to prevent the spread of a lethal virus which killed about 99% of Earth's population in 1996 and 1997. Scientists from the future believed that a secret army called "The Twelve Monkeys" spread the virus.

James was brought in to the Baltimore Medical Institution, where Dr. Railly worked, after he attacked police officers. Dr. Kathryn Railly, played by Madeleine Stowe, was a psychiatrist.

What Kathryn meant was why James was in the institution, but he thought she meant why he was brought to the past. The scientists sent him to the past because he was a good observer. He took a spider from the institution as a specimen for the scientists, but he had no place to carry it so he was forced to eat it.

"We are not producing anymore. We are just consumers", said Jeffrey. Jeffrey Goines was the son of a famous virologist. Brad Pitt portrayed Jeffrey, in a role which gave him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination.

L.J. thought himself a member of "an intellectual elite preparing to subjugate the barbarian hordes on Pluto". At least he realized that he was mentally divergent.

After his failure to collect specimens from the past, the scientists sent James back to what they thought was October 1996. In error they sent him to the French trenches in World War I, where he was injured just before the scientists sent him correctly to 1996.

We met Jose in the first scene of the film. He was another convict next to James Cole in the prison. Obviously sent by the scientists in the same mission, Jose met James for a moment in the French trenches.

Answer: She heard on TV that missing Ricky Neuman was hiding in a barn.

James had told her that he remembered Ricky's story when he was a kid, and that the boy was hiding in a barn. But of course Kathryn didn't believe him at first. After hearing the story on television, she started to believe. A little later, the ballistics report said that the bullet she removed from James' thigh was fired prior to 1920.

She then looked in her book and saw a photograph of James from World War I.

Answer: Dr. Goines' assistant

Kathryn saw the doctor's assistant at the airport, and read in a newspaper that "The Twelve Monkeys" had kidnapped Jeffrey Goines' father. She remembered then the assistant from her lecture, and realized that he was the one who spread the virus. She informed James, who tried to trace and kill him, resulting in the scene which haunted James' dreams, his own death.

The movie closed with 9-year old James Cole leaving the airport with his parents, a few weeks before the plague.
