Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who convinces Joseph Sedley not to ask Becky to marry him?

Answer: George Osborne

Becky Sharp comes from a poor background. Her father was a painter, but also an alcoholic. After his death, she is sent to Miss Pinkerton's Academy, a girl's school where she has to work for her room and board. After finishing school, she travels with her friend, Amelia, to London. During Becky's brief stay with Amelia's family, Amelia's brother, Joseph, is attracted to Becky, and Becky is attracted to the position and security he can provide her. Amelia's intended, George Osborne, points out to Joseph that Becky is not in the same social class, and Joseph doesn't propose.
2. When Becky leaves to begin her governess position, what does she give Amelia?

Answer: a painting

Amelia was the only person who was kind to Becky at Pinkerton's, and the two became friends. The small painting Becky gives Amelia is one of her father's paintings. Becky has taken a position as governess to the daughters of Sir Pitt Crawley.
3. Becky is fired from her governess position.

Answer: False

Becky is rather successful at teaching the two Crawley daughters, and also manages to clean up the Crawley home, which was a shambles at the time of her arrival. Sir Crawley's wealthy spinster sister, Matilda, comes for a visit, accompanied by Sir Pitt's second son, Rawdon. Matilda is immediately charmed by Becky's wit, and invites her to come and stay with her in London, ending Becky's employment with Sir Pitt. Becky and Rawdon are also attracted to each other and begin a flirtation.
4. Who does Becky marry?

Answer: Rawdon Crawley

Pitt Crawley writes to his aunt that he has married, and that his step-mother has died. Sir Pitt (Pitt's father) arrives in London, and asks Becky to marry him. She tells him she can't marry him, she's already married, to his son Rawdon. Becky's news is too much for Matilda, and she kicks Becky out of her house. Matilda also cuts Rawdon out of her will.
5. When the Sedley's possessions are auctioned, what does Dobbin successfully bid on?

Answer: piano

Because of George Osborne's father, Mr. Sedley has lost everything, and all of the family's possessions are being auctioned. Becky and Rawdon attend the auction and bid on the piano, but let Dobbin outbid them. He says he has a friend who enjoys the piano, but Becky knows that Dobbin is in love with Amelia, and he's getting it back for her. Dobbin is at the Sedley's new home when the piano is delivered, but is crestfallen when Amelia thinks that George has bought it for her. Mr. Osborne tries to get George to marry a wealthy young friend of his daughter's, but George defies his father and marries Amelia just before they're sent to Brussels.
6. Who dies at the Battle of Waterloo?

Answer: George Osborne

William, Rawdon and George are all soldiers, and are sent to Brussels as Napoleon approaches. Amelia, and a pregnant Becky accompany their husbands to Brussels. While attending the Duchess of Richmond's ball, George excuses himself from Amelia, who isn't feeling well because she's pregnant now too, and dances with Becky.

He later hands Becky a note in her nosegay, asking to be with her. The men are mustered as Napoleon is about to reach the city, and George is the only one of the three killed.
7. What sex are Becky and Amelia's babies?

Answer: both boys

Rawdon and Becky call their son Rawdy, and Amelia calls her son Georgy. Becky and Rawdon move into a home in London, but are quickly in debt because of Rawdon's gambling. Amelia has moved back with her parents. Dobbin asked Amelia to bring Georgy and accompany him to his new assignment in India, but she said no. Years later, Mr. Osborne finally acknowledges his grandson, but in order to guarantee a good education and future for Georgy, Amelia must essentially give him over to Mr. Osborne.
8. When Becky comes home to find creditors removing their furniture, who comes to her rescue?

Answer: Marquess of Steyne

Of course his help comes with strings attached, but Rawdon seems powerless to do anything to remedy the situation. Steyne even convinces Becky to send her son away to school so that she can spend more time with Steyne.
9. Becky convinces Amelia to go after Dobbin by reading her the note George had given Becky in Brussels.

Answer: True

Becky and Rawdon split up after Rawdon finds out the extent of Becky's dealings with Steyne. Rawdon is offered the governorship of Coventry Island, but later dies of tropical fever. Becky is in Germany twelve years later, working as a card dealer. Georgy, now a young man, comes in with Dobbin, who Becky recognizes. Georgy says he and his mother are traveling with her friend, Dobbin. Later, Dobbin and Amelia quarrel and he prepares to leave for good. Becky and Amelia meet and discuss Dobbin. Becky tells Amelia that Dobbin was the one who bought the piano for her, and reads Amelia the note that George had given her in Brussels. Becky helps Amelia realize what a selfish, shallow person George really was, and that she shouldn't waste anymore of her life being loyal to his memory when Dobbin loves her so much. Amelia finds Dobbin before he leaves.
10. Who does Becky end up with?

Answer: Joseph Sedley

At the card table, Becky hears someone asking for her, and is surprised to see Joseph Sedley. He says that Amelia told him where to find Becky, and that he is on his way back to India. Becky readily agrees to go there with him.
