Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Wedge was first seen, it was during the briefing before the assault on the first Death Star. He was being played, this one time, by Colin Higgins rather than Denis Lawson. What name have fans dubbed this version of Wedge?

Answer: Fake Wedge

Although Colin Higgins was the first to play Wedge, he is not the one most "Star Wars" fans have come to know and accept as the bonafide Wedge. Many fans were unaware that the pilot seated next to Luke in the ready room was supposed to be Wedge.

Pablo Hidalgo, the Internet Content Manager for Lucas Online was the first to confirm the identity of the actor who played Fake Wedge. Colin Higgin was fired after flubbing his lines in that scene. Apparently, he was supposed to say something other than, "That's impossible!"

"That's impossible!" and "Look at the size of that thing!" are two statements attributed to Wedge that seem to be defeatist in nature. Apparently, the seemingly impossible destruction of the first Death Star must have emboldened Wedge and he became slightly more optimistic.
2. What kind of starfighter does Wedge borrow, to hunt down and exact revenge on the smuggler responsible for the death of his parents?

Answer: Z-95 Headhunter

The Z-96 Headhunter was the forerunner of the more famous X-wing fighter that Wedge favors throughout the rest of his career. It was created as a joint venture between Incom and Subpro Corporations.

He borrowed the ship from Booster Terrick, a figure that played a prominent role in the history of Rogue Squadron. Booster ran the Rogues' base of operations on Yag'Dhul during the Bacta War.
3. On the assault on the first Death Star, Wedge followed Luke into the trench as one of his wingmen. He was forced to pull out after his X-wing was struck by laser fire. What was hit that made it impossible for Wedge to continue?

Answer: A stabilizer

"Get clear, Wedge! You can't do any more good back there." - Luke Skywalker

The stabilizers used on T-65 X-wings were phi-inverted lateral stabilizers. How they worked is anyone's guess, but if there are any Incom engineers out there that have an explanation, I'll add it.

In the trench, the sequence of action saw Biggs Darklighter's X-wing destroyed by Darth Vader, the timely arrival of the Millenium Falcon, Obi-Wan Kenobi reaching out to Luke through the Force and Luke using the Force to hit the thermal exhaust port with a torpedo.

Wedge, Luke, the Millenium Falcon and a few other pilots escaped the resulting explosion (both cinematic versions of it).
4. After the Battle of Yavin, Red Squadron would be reformed into two flights, Renegade and Rogue. Which of the following was NOT one of the original pilots in Rogue Flight?

Answer: Narra

Narra, nicknamed "The Boss", fought in the Clone Wars. He was responsible for the formation of both Renegade and Rogue flight. He took command of Renegade Flight and gave command of Rogue Flight to Luke Skywalker. He met his end just prior to the Battle of Hoth.

The original pilots that constituted Rogue Flight (later reformed as Rogue Squadron) were Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, Zev Senesca, Wes Janson and Derrik "Hobbie" Klivian.
5. On Hoth, Wedge and his gunner were able to disable an AT-AT (Imperial Walker) by using their tow cable to bind up its legs. What was Wedge's gunner's name?

Answer: Wes Janson

Wes Janson first flew Y-wings for the Rebellion and, through an unfortunate series of events, earned his first kill. He was forced to shoot down a fellow Rebel pilot in order to avoid giving away the position of an ambush.

Although Wes and Tycho survived the Battle of Hoth, Dak and Zev would not be so lucky. Zes was killed when his Snowspeeder exploded, after being hit by fire from an AT-AT. His gunner, Kit Valent, was killed as well.

Dak was Luke Skywalker's gunner and was killed when the back of their Snowspeeder was hit by AT-AT fire. Luke managed to pilot the useless craft to the surface but was unable to recover Dak's body before the Snowspeeder was crushed under the snow and ice by an AT-AT's footpad.
6. During the evacuation of Hoth, what maneuver did Wedge and other Rebel pilots use to engage an Imperial-class Star Destroyer long enough to allow the transport, Thon's Orchard, to escape?

Answer: Tallon Split

The maneuver was named after Adar Tallon, a military instructor in the Rebellion.

It required two fighters to fly so close together that they appeared as one on a capital ship's targeting computers. Once the pair was within attack range, they would separate. The targeting computers would continue to track only one of the ships, which allowed the other one to freely strafe the capital ship without the need of dodging laser fire.
7. During the assault on the second Death Star, Lando Calrissian destroyed the main reactor, using torpedoes from the Millenium Falcon. What target did Wedge destroy?

Answer: Power regulator

Wedge took out one of the power regulators as the Millenium Falcon targeted the main reactor. The explosion was so great that Lando just barely got the Falcon out of the superstructure of the Death Star before it was engulfed by the blast.

A flux capacitor is used in the time machine in "Back to the Future".

Starships in the "Star Trek" universe used anti-matter in their warp engines and required containment fields to keep the matter/anti-matter reactions from destroying the ship.

Naquada was a mineral in the "Stargate" universe that was the make-up of the star gates. Naquada was able to multiply the destructive power of any standard explosive.
8. After the Battle of Endor, Wedge started to rebuild the Rogue Squadron around a core of proven X-wing fighter pilots. Who, among the following was NOT one of these pilots?

Answer: Corran Horn

All three pilots (Tycho, Wes and Hobbie) participated at the Battle of Endor and led TIE fighters away from Wedge and Lando in the Death Star's superstructure.

Corran Horn, a Corsec officer, joined the Rogues later on and developed into a Jedi Knight. He eventually became Rogue Leader after one of Wedge's retirements.
9. One last piece of the puzzle was needed for the Rebel Alliance to claim victory over the Empire. What planet did Wedge conquer, effectively bringing an end to the Empire, with the help of Rogue Squadron?

Answer: Coruscant

Although the death of the Emperor had brought widespread uprisings on Coruscant, Imperial forces quickly brought order back to the Empire's capital world.

After a failed mission, Rogue Squadron was decommissioned, but quickly reformed by Wedge to liberate Coruscant. The liberation of the planet earned Wedge the nickname The Conqueror of Coruscant.

Two people that would have a huge impact on Wedge's life would be met during this mission. First, Ysanne Isard who would become Rogue Squadron's nemesis for years to come. Secondly, Iella Wessiri, who would eventually become his wife.
10. After the liberation of Coruscant, Wedge and the Rogues started an all-out war to stop Ysanne Isard's plot to cripple the New Republic. What was this war called?

Answer: The Bacta War

The war between Wedge and Ysanne Isard was called the Bacta War because of what was at stake. After fleeing Coruscant, Isard captured Thyferra, the planet that supplied bacta to the galaxy. She also released the Krytos Virus that only attacked non-human species. Bacta was essential in curing those afflicted by the virus and Isard was in full control of it.

The New Rupublic was so new that they could not launch a counter-attack while dealing with another threat in the form of Warlord Zsinj, so Wedge and much of Rogue Squadron took it upon themselves to capture Thyferra. Naturally, they did.
11. Wedge would actually retire three times before it finally stuck. What invading race forced the New Republic to ask him to come out of retirement the first time?

Answer: Yuuzhan Vong

The Yuuzhan Vong originated from outside of the galaxy. They were ruled by their Priest Caste, with the Supreme Overlord being the highest rank of that order. They found all mechanical technology blasphemous so all of their technology was genetically engineered. They were masochistic and could not be sensed by the force.

The Yuuzhan Vong staged many diversions before they invaded the galaxy. So well-planned was the invasion that the New Republic did not even notice the first invasion force at Helska IV.

The resulting war lasted over three years and millions were killed, including the mighty Wookie warrior, Chewbacca.
12. What conflict between the Galactic Alliance and Wedge's homeworld of Corellia would force Wedge out of his second retirement?

Answer: The Second Galactic Civil War

Corellia escaped the Yuuzhan Vong invasion without much damage to its infrastructure. This placed it in a prime position to become powerful as other systems rebuilt. As it grew in power, it grew in its desire to be independent. When it was discovered that Corellia was secretly building a war machine, the Galactic Alliance launched a pre-emptive strike. This hailed the start of the Second Galactic Civil War.

Wedge had originally wanted to stay out of the conflict, but he was taken into custody by the Galactic Alliance. This helped him choose a side. He decided to fight against the Galactic Alliance.

As a result, he started the war fighting as a General in the Corellian Defense Force alongside Han Solo. His role and titles switched often during the conflict and he wound up forming an elite X-wing group called Rakehell Squadron, fighting for Luke Skywalker's Jedi Coalition in resistance to the Galactic Alliance. During this time the Rakehells took on, and defeated, Rogue Squadron.
13. Wedge developed what became known as the Antilles Four-Step Instant Speech to help him with the many public appearances required of his rank. Which of the following was NOT one of the four steps?

Answer: Part Two: Introduce the seated dignitaries to kill time

Part Two really entailed reminding the audience why you were speaking to them.

This formula was most effectively used when he landed on Adumar:

"People of Adumar, I am Wedge Antilles and it is my pleasure to meet you at last. And as a representative of the New Republic, I'm pleased to be present at this historic meeting of our great peoples. I must admit, I find this display very heartwarming. It's possibly the best greeting I've ever received. I'll have to find out if I can replicate it on the walls of my quarters back home. I expect to have more to say when I'm settled in, but for now, thank you for the warm welcome".
14. All the ladies listed below were romances of Wedge's, but which one did he marry?

Answer: Iella Wessiri

Wedge and Iella first met during the attempt to liberate Coruscant. Wedge asked her out, but her husband Diric Wessiri resurfaced. Wedge and Diric actually got along, but Iella was forced to kill Diric. He had been turned into a sleeper agent by Ysanne Isard, programmed to kill a traitor of the Empire (Evir Derricote) as well as Iella.

Wedge and Iella met again on Adumar and the romance rekindled. Wedge proposed shortly after the successful completion of the mission and they married.
15. Wedge and his wife had two daughters. Myri was the youngest. What was the name of the oldest?

Answer: Syal

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, Wedge sent his daughters with the Solos to the Maw for safekeeping. After the crisis was over, Syal went to school and piloted freighters to help pay for it. She then went to the academy and learned to fly fighters under the tutelage of Tycho Celchu.

During the Second Galactic Civil War, Syal flew for the Galactic Alliance against Corellia. This brought her into direct combat with her father on more than one occasion. As the war developed she eventually wound up reporting to Wedge as part of Rakehell Squadron.
