Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a 1967 movie directed by Stanley Kramer. I was a controversial film when I was made as my story told of a young white girl and an African-American man who were madly in love and wished to marry. I was released six months after the death of one of my main stars. What movie am I?

Answer: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" starred Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn and Katherine Houghton, who is Katharine Hepburn's real niece. The movie told the story of a girl who brought her fiancé home to meet her parents and of their reaction when they saw that he was an African-American.

The movie was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won two, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Katharine Hepburn) and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay - Written Directly for the Screen. The movie won two BAFTA Awards, Best Actor Spencer Tracy and Best Actress, Katharine Hepburn. It was nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards.

This movie had a budget of approximately $4 million with a world-wide box office of approximately $70 million.

Spencer Tracy died only 17 days after the completion of filming. This was the ninth and final film that Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy made together. At the time the movie was made, marriage between Caucasians and Afro-Americans was still illegal in 14 States in the USA.

Katharine Hepburn has won four Oscars and was the first actor to achieve this feat. Her Oscar-winning movies were: "Morning Glory" (1933); "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967); "The Lion in Winter" (1968) and "On Golden Pond" (1981). She was nominated twelve times for an Academy Award.

Spencer Tracy was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won two, "Boy's Town" (1938) and "Captains Courageous" (1937).
2. I am a 1966 movie directed by Lewis Gilbert, from a novel and play of the same name by Bill Naughton. I tell the story of a young Englishman who lives life for his own enjoyment and goes from affair to affair. During the film he speaks directly to the camera, narrating his actions to the audience. I was remade again in 2004. What movie am I?

Answer: Alfie

"Alfie" starred Michael Caine in the title role, as well as Shelley Winters, Millicent Martin, Jane Asher and Denholm Elliott. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, six BAFTAS and six Golden Globe Awards.

The story spanned a few years in Alfie's life and the events that took place. He got a girl pregnant but, because Alfie could not commit to her, she married someone else. When he had a health check, it was revealed that he had a tubercular shadow on his lungs and he spent time in a convalescent home. He had an affair with another girl, who again became pregnant, but had an abortion, which Alfie found very distressful. He met a rich older American woman and decided to change his ways and settle down with her but when he went to tell her, he found her in bed with another young man. That left him wondering "What is it all about?".

The role of Alfie was turned down by Terence Stamp, Richard Harris, Laurence Harvey, and Anthony Newley.

Michael Caine was born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite on 14 March 1933 in London. He has been nominated for several Oscars. He won his first Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1986), and he won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for "Cider House Rules" (1999). He has been nominated for and won BAFTAs and Golden Globe Awards.

"Alfie" was remade in 2004 and starred Jude Law in the title role, with Renee Taylor, Jane Krakowski, and Marisa Tomei.
3. Directed by Eliot Silverstein, I am a 1965 Comedy/Musical/Western. I tell the story of a young woman who hires a gunfighter to help protect her family's ranch from a developer who is trying to take it. Her father is murdered, so she pays the gunfighter to seek revenge. But he is not your ordinary gunfighter! Two minstrels wander throughout the film, singing the story. What movie am I?

Answer: Cat Ballou

"Cat Ballou" starred Jane Fonda in the title role, with Lee Marvin playing dual roles (as the gunfighter Kid Shelleen, and the hired killer Tim Strawn), together with Michael Callan, Dwayne Hickman and Nat "King" Cole and Stubby Kaye as the two minstrels. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards, with Lee Marvin winning an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

When Lee Marvin accepted his Oscar he said "Half of this probably belongs to a horse somewhere out there in the San Fernando Valley". He was referring to the scene with the "drunken" cross-legged horse. When the director was informed by the horse trainer that horses could not cross their legs, he gave the horse trainer one hour to get the horse to cross its legs. The trainer achieved this by giving the horse sugar cubes to eat while he crossed the horse's legs for it.

Ann-Margret's manager turned turned down the title role without her knowing anything about it and Kirk Douglas, when offered the Shelleen role, also turned it down. Nat King Cole died of lung cancer several months before the film's release.
4. Directed by J Lee Thompson, I am a 1961 war/action/adventure movie. I am based on a novel of the same name written by Alistair MacLean. I tell the story of attempts by a World War II allied commando team to enter and destroy an enormous German bunker, situated on the top of a cliff, whose weaponry threatened Allied ships. What movie am I?

Answer: Guns of Navarone

"The Guns of Navarone" starred Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Stanley Baker, Anthony Quayle, James Darren, Irene Papas and Gia Scala. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one for Best Effects, Special Effects. It won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama.

The commando team had to break into the highly secured German bunker and destroy the two massive guns that prevented ships from rescuing 2,000 British soldiers left stranded on the Island of Keros in the Aegean Sea. To carry out this rescue before the Germans could launch an assault on the troops, Allied destroyers had to pass the guns on the nearby island of Navarone. The guns could not be destroyed by aerial bombing, so the commando raid was carried out.

William Holden wanted to play the lead role, but his asking salary was too much. Rock Hudson and Cary Grant were also considered for this role. Kenneth More was originally cast in the David Niven role, but after abusing and swearing at a studio official, he was released from the film. Alec Guinness and Dean Martin were also considered for this role before it ultimately went to David Niven.

Up until its release, this was one of the most expensive movies ever made, costing an estimated $6 million. It was the top grossing film of 1961.
5. Based on a Broadway musical of the same name, I am a 1962 musical/comedy directed by Morton DaCosta. I tell the story of a travelling salesman who is also a conman. His scheme is to take the money of citizens of River City by having them pay him to establish a boys' marching band, the cost to include uniforms, instruments and tuition. Once he had the money he was going to take it and run. What movie am I?

Answer: The Music Man

"The Music Man" starred Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold and Paul Ford. The movie was nominated for six Academy Awards and won one for Best Musical, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment. It won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical.

Frank Sinatra was offered the role, even though Robert Preston starred in the Broadway musical. However, the writer of the play insisted that Robert Preston be given the movie role. If not, there would be no movie.

For the final parade scene in the movie, real marching bands from the University of California and the University of Southern California were used. All the musical instruments used in the film were made for the film and afterwards sold.
6. Directed by Blake Edwards, I am a 1965 action/adventure/comedy. My story tells of a car race from New York to Paris and the rivalry between The Great Leslie (the "goodie" dressed in white), and Professor Fate (the "baddie" dressed in black). What movie am I?

Answer: The Great Race

"The Great Race" starred Jack Lemmon in the dual roles of Professor Fate and Crown Prince Frederick Hoepnick, Tony Curtis, as The Great Leslie (real name Leslie Galant III), Peter Falk as Maximilian Meen, Professor Fate's offsider, Natalie Wood as Maggie Dubois, the love interest for the Great Leslie, along with Keenan Wynn (assisting The Great Leslie), Arthur O'Connell, Vivian Vance, Dorothy Provine and Larry Storch.

This movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one for Best Effects Sound Effects. It was also nominated for four Golden Globe Awards.

To help promote automobile sales at the turn of the century, The Great Leslie convinces car makers to stage a race from New York to Paris, travelling west across the USA, then the Bering Strait and Russia, and thence on to Paris. However, the dastardly Professor Fate vows to win the race in a car that he, himself has invented. All sorts of tricks, including dirty ones, happen but eventually The Great Leslie lets Professor Fate win, just to prove to Maggie that he loves her more than winning a race. Professor Fate gets mad because Leslie let him win, so at the end of the movie, he challenges Leslie to a race from Paris to New York.

Charlton Heston was offered the role of The Great Leslie, but because of other film commitments he had to turn it down. Natalie Wood had to take lessons in fencing, riding sidesaddle and learning how to smoke a cigar.

In the great pie-throwing scene, of course the Great Leslie was the only person not to be hit with a pie, keeping himself in pristine white condition. However, during the filming of the scene he was splattered a few times so had to keep changing into white suits. This was the biggest pie fight ever filmed and all the pies were real and contained custard, whipped cream, fruit etc. Once the scene was shot there were still some 300 pies left, which were promptly devoured by the crew.
7. I am a 1962 war movie with several directors, which was based on a 1959 history book of the same name, written by Cornelius Ryan. I tell the story of the D-Day landing on 6 June 1944 at Normandy during World War II. What movie am I?

Answer: The Longest Day

"The Longest Day" had a stellar cast including Sean Connery, Red Buttons, Richard Burton, Richard Beymer, Eddie Albert, Fabian, Mel Ferrer, Henry Fonda, Jeffrey Hunter, Peter Lawford, Roddy McDowall, Sal Mineo, Robert Mitchum, Kenneth More, Edmond O'Brien, Leslie Phillips, Robert Ryan, Tommy Sands, George Segal, Rod Steiger, Richard Todd, Robert Wagner, John Wayne, and many, many others.

The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, Best Cinematography and Best Effects, Special Effects. It was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and won one for Best Cinematography.

Richard Todd, who played Major John Howard, participated in the D-Day landing in real life. He was a Captain in the 7th Parachute Battalion.

Whilst the film crew were scouting for locations on the Normandy beach, they uncovered a tank that had been buried in the sand since the World War II invasion. The tank was dug up, fixed up, cleaned up and used in the movie. Producer Darryl F Zanuck could not find any working German Messerschmitts or British Spitfires to use in the movie, but he eventually uncovered two Messerschmitts currently being used by the Spanish Air Force and two Spitfires still in action in the Belgian Air Force. He managed to rent all four planes. At least 20,000 troops from Britain, the UK and France were used in filming. Twenty-two ships of the US Sixth Fleet were used in filming some scenes.

Up until "Schindler's List", this was the most expensive black-and-white film ever made.
8. Loosely based on a novella of the same name by Truman Capote. I am a 1961 film directed by Blake Edwards. I tell the story of a very unusual girl living in New York and of her relationship with a struggling writer named Paul, who moves into her apartment block. What movie am I?

Answer: Breakfast at Tiffany's

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" starred Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly and George Peppard as Paul. It also starred Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney.

The film was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two, Best Music, Original Song and Best Music Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. It was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and won a Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack Album or Recording or Score from a Motion Picture or Television (Henry Mancini).

Truman Capote sought for Marilyn Monroe to play the role of Holly Golightly, but her drama coach thought it would not be a good role for her, so she was replaced by Audrey Hepburn. Steve McQueen was offered the role of Paul, but due to commitments for his TV show "Wanted Dead or Alive", he had to turn it down. The famous Tiffany's store, never having ever opened on a Sunday, allowed filming to take place on that day inside the store.

The very famous song "Moon River" was nearly cut from the film. At a post-production meeting, a studio executive wanted to get rid of "that stupid song". However, Audrey Hepburn had other ideas and the song stayed.

Audrey Hepburn was paid a salary of $750,000, which at that time was the second highest amount ever paid to an actress. Only Elizabeth Taylor had earned more. At an auction in 2006, the "little black dress" worn by Audrey Hepburn in the opening scenes, sold just over $800,000!
9. I am a 1963 adventure/drama film directed by John Sturges. I was based on a non-fiction book of the same name written by Paul Brickhill. I tell the story the planned escape by a few hundred Allied prisoners from a World War II German POW camp.. What movie am I?

Answer: The Great Escape

"The Great Escape" starred Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn and Gordon Jackson, among others. The film was nominated for one Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

Paul Brickhill, who wrote the book, was piloting a Spitfire during World War II, when it was shot down. He was captured and taken to Stalag Luft III. He assisted in the escape preparations.

In the famous motorcycle chase, Steve McQueen, dressed as one of the German pursuers, was allowed to ride one of the motorcycles in the chase. When the film was edited, Steve McQueen (as a German) was actually chasing himself (as the star). Although McQueen did perform a lot of the stunts himself, it was not him who jumped over the fence on the motorcycle, but his friend, Bud Ekins.

Charles Bronson had once been a coal miner and gave the director advice on how to move the earth to construct a proper tunnel.

Donald Pleasence and several other members of the cast, were actually prisoners of war during World War II. Pleasence, a Royal Air Force Pilot, was shot down, became a prisoner of war and was tortured by the Germans.
10. I am a 1962 movie directed by Blake Edwards. Henry Mancini provided the music. I tell the story of Joe, who falls in love with Kirsten and how their social drinking turns into alcoholism and how it destroys their lives. What movie am I?

Answer: Days of Wine and Roses

"Days of Wine and Roses" starred Jack Lemmon as Joe and Lee Remick as Kirsten, along with Charles Bickford and Jack Klugman. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one for Best Music, Original Song (music by Henry Mancini and lyrics by Johny Mercer for "Days of Wine and Roses"). The film was also nominated for three BAFTA Awards and four Golden Globe Awards. Andy Williams had a very successful hit with the title song.

"Days of Wine and Roses" first appeared live as a TV Drama on an episode of "Playhouse 90" in 1958 and was nominated for an Emmy. This live TV drama starred Cliff Robertson and Piper Laurie.
