Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a 1971 movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on a novella written by Anthony Burgess that was published in 1962. I tell the story of a crime spree by the leader of a gang, his capture and so-called rehabilitation. What movie am I?

Answer: A Clockwork Orange

"A Clockwork Orange" starred Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, Adrienne Corri and Miriam Karlin. The movie is set in a future London and tells of a gang and its leader, Alex DeLarge, who go on a violent spree. They steal a car and go to the home of a writer where they beat him and rape his wife. He is captured and eventually undergoes experimental aversion therapy.

The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and seven BAFTA Awards, amongst many others.

During the bashing and rape scene, Alex sang "Singin' in the Rain", which greatly displeased Gene Kelly, who was upset "about the way his signature tune had been portrayed". Stanley Kubrick bought the rights to this song for $10,000. This was the first movie to use Dolby sound. It was, at that time, only the second X-rated film to be nominated for an Academy Award.

According to the author, Anthony Burgess, "the title of the book (and hence the movie) came from East London slang, deriving from the phrase 'as queer as a clockwork orange'." However it is generally believed that Burgess himself coined that phrase.
2. I am a 1979 movie and am a somewhat autobiographical movie of its director, Bob Fosse. I am based on Fosse's career as a director, dancer and choreographer. What movie am I?

Answer: All That Jazz

"All That Jazz" starred Roy Scheider, Jessica Lange, Leland Palmer and Ann Reinking. The movie tells the story of Joe Gideon (Scheider) who is both editing a Hollywood movie, which he directed, and working on his latest Broadway musical. To enable him to cope he turns to sex and drugs.

The movie was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won four: Best Art Direction/Set Direction; Best Costume Design; Best Film Editing and Best Music, Original Song and Its Adaption or Best Adaptive Song. Bob Fosse was nominated for Best Director, and Roy Scheider for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The movie was also nominated for, and won, many other awards.

Many of the characters in the movie are based on real-life people. The role of Joe Gideon was originally offered to Richard Dreyfuss. Jack Lemmon, Alan Alda and Gene Hackman were also considered for the leading role. The film cost approximately $10 million to make and grossed over $86 million.

It tells the story of a private investigator (Nicholson) hired by a woman to follow her husband, who worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The film had a budget of approximately $6 million with a Box Office return of over $30 million.

It was to be the first film of a trilogy. The second film "The Two Jakes" was released in 1990 and again starred Jack Nicholson. However, the third film was never made. This film was ranked as the number 21 "Greatest Movie of All Time" by the American Film Institute.

This movie contains one of the most famous quotes ever when Sheriff Brody says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." According to the scriptwriter, this line was ad-libbed by Roy Scheider. Steven Spielberg named the shark "Bruce". Three Jaws movies followed, "Jaws 2" (1978), "Jaws 3-D" (1983), and "Jaws: The Revenge" (1987).

A big slice of the budget for the film was paid in rental for soldiers and equipment from the Spanish army. John Wayne was eager but was turned down for the role of Patton. Brian Cohen is born on the same day, in a stable next door to Jesus of Nazareth, much to the confusion of the Three Wise Men. Brian joins a political movement "The People's Front of Judea" (PFJ) and his goal in life is to oust the Romans from Judea. He is subsequently mistaken for the Messiah and that is the beginning of his woes.

John Cleese, in an interview in 1998, spoke of the many protests from all denominations of Christianity about the movie, and said he joked with Michael Palin "We've brought them all together for the first time in 2000 years!" George Harrison was a big fan of Monty Python and raised $4 million towards the making of this movie, and he has a brief cameo where he shakes hands with Brian and says "ullo". The movie was banned in Norway for 12 months and in Ireland until 1987.
