When Sonny told his father that he adopted a son, his father said he needed to give the kid back, since Sonny was not ready to be a parent.

At the end of the movie, Sonny fought to get custody, of Julian, when New York City's Department of Child Protective Services took Julian into their custody. Julian told Layla that his nickname was "Frankenstein" and Layla started to bond with him.

When Sonny told Layla that Child Protective Services took Julian, she said she would help him win custody of the little boy.

At the hearing to determine custody, Layla cross examined Julian and asked him to tell the court who his deceased mother would want to be Julian's father. Julian said she would want Sonny to be his father.

In another scene, Corinne ran into Sonny and Julian, at the grocery store, and asked him if it was true that he was seeing her sister, Layla. In the testimony, Sonny mentioned that he went to a rock concert and did not spend time with a dying relative. Lenny said Sonny did not have health insurance and filed for social security at a young age and to give him custody of another life would be insane. Sonny gave a heartfelt speech to Lenny and this moved Lenny so much that he asked the judge to grant custody of Julian to Sonny. There was some commotion, during the hearing, so the judge banged her gavel and called for order in the court. After Sonny gave a heartfelt speech to his father the courtroom cheered him on in hopes he would get custody of Julian.

The judge banged her gavel and told Sonny that because he lied to Child Protective Services about being Kevin Gerrity and defrauded the state of New York, he technically kidnapped Julian.

She said he would not get custody and that he should be in jail so she ordered her bailiff to take Sonny into custody so she could assess punishment on Sonny. When the bailiff started to put handcuffs on Sonny, Kevin stood up and said, as Julian's father, he refused to press charges.

When Sonny went to get breakfast from McDonald's, one day, he arrived at 11:00 a.m. and they had stopped serving breakfast. Later on, in the movie, Sonny and Julian were warning rollerbladers, skateboarders and others in Central Park to slow down and they saw the homeless guy.
