Mother Abbess had doubts as to if Maria really wanted to be a nun so she sent her to be a governess for the seven Von Trapp children in hopes she learned some discipline. Maria returned to the abbey when she heard Captain Von Trapp loved her and met with Mother Abbess.

She encouraged Maria to face her problems and to return to The Von Trapp residence. Before Maria left with The Von Trapps to climb over The Alps so Georg could not serve with the Nazis, she bid Mother Abbess a tearful farewell.
